Posted: 21 Feb 2014 08:56 PM PST Opportunities to find a job are everywhere on Twitter. Getting these jobs takes some different tactics than traditionally. Resume’s are becoming less important as the importance of a solid social media community continues to increase. In this article I cover 10 tips that will help you find a job with Twitter by identifying more job opportunities and positioning yourself as the best person for the job. 1. Start a #HireMe CampaignLet your followers know you are on the hunt for a new job. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and send a tweet sharing your profile link. Tweet valuable resources and do your best to help your audience out. You can help people in your Twitter network by sharing their content, recommending them, and helping them build buzz about content they are sharing. If you have helped others they will feel inclined to reciprocate the helpfulness, so when they see that you are on a #jobhunt they will be more likely to help you out if they can. 2. Use Job Hunting #HashtagsSend a tweet asking if anyone knows about new opportunities in your niche. You can use #hashtags to let people know you are doing a #jobsearch. Job Listings: You can find general job advice and lots of listings through hashtags like #jobs, #recruiting, #jobadvice, #jobposting, #jobhunt and #jobsearch. To narrow it down seek out more specific hashtags, such as or #prjobs or #salesjobs. Job-Related and Industry Chats: Getting involved with industry chats is a way to show your industry in a particular field and represent yourself as a knowledgeable person. Also, if your search isn’t going so well, get involved in job-related chats, such as #jobhuntchat, #careerchat, and #hirefriday for friendly advice. 3. Build a Strong NetworkA lot of successful Twitter job stories actually end with the punchline, “I wasn’t even looking for a job.” The stronger your network is the more of a reason there is for employers to hire you, if you are willing to tweet on behalf of your employer. 4. Connect with RecruitersUsing the Twitter Marketing software TweetAdder I did a search for any Twitter accounts with the keyword “recruiter” in their bio. The search returned: 5425 people with the word “recruiter” in their bio. A bio search is not the only way to use TweetAdder to build connections, you can also follow all people on Twitter list, or people who have recently tweeted a keyword or phrase you want to target. To discover how to use TweetAdder for maximum effect check out this TweetAdder networking success guide. 5. Optimize Your BioInclude a link to an online CV or resume in your bio. Make it clear that you are seeking employment and taking action to find a job. Let people know about the kind of position you are looking for. Ask your audience to share your profile with potential employers and make it easy for people to contact you for more information. Get your followers to connect with you on LinkedIn and take the time to create a complete LinkedIn profile. 6. Position Yourself as an ExpertBe a thought leader. Speak your mind and back up your thoughts with facts. Spark discussion with people who have large followings. Insightful quotes and quality content are two tried and tested content marketing strategies that work very well for gaining recognition as an expert in your niche. Having more followers also creates the perception of expertise. If you want more Twitter followers I recommend you check out these 50 innovative tips and the service Grow My Twitter Network.
7. Use a Twitter Job Search EngineTwitJobSearch is one search engine for finding jobs on Twitter. Below you can see what it looks like. Tweetmyjobs is another Twitter job search engine. This jobs search engine seems more enhanced than TwitJobSearch but requires that you sign up for a free account before they deliver any search results. If these two tools do not give you what you are looking for a great place to look is Twitter’s advanced search engine. The nice thing about Twitter’s search engine is it makes it easy to search all tweets and focus in on the tweets that matter the most to you. 8. Start a BlogIf you own a successful blog this will be a clear indicator to any employer that you are a capable content marketer who could help create similar success for a prospective employer. Having a blog also places you in the position of the expert and enables you to develop your voice while building trust with your audience as you deliver value. 9. Follow Job Search Lists & AccountsThe Twitter account @JobHuntOrg created a Twitter list with 180 members that all tweet about new job opportunities! Here is the link: https://twitter.com/JobHuntOrg/job-listings/ Another interesting list comes from @betterjobsearch and he describes the list as “Specialists in reporting, consulting and for job seekers, listings, job fairs.” This Twitter list has 476 members. Here’s the link: https://twitter.com/betterjobsearch/job-guru-career-work Twitter Accounts That Post Job OpeningsBelow you will find some Twitter accounts and lists related to different people on Twitter who are involved in the #JobSearch niche. #JobOpening is another hashtag worth researching. By company@attjobs – Jobs at AT&T By field@alldevjobs - Developer jobs By job type@findinternships – Internships and entry level jobs for college students By region@MyBristolJobs – Job listings from mybristoljobs.co.uk General@betterjobsearch 10. Take the Conversation OfflineOnce you have established a connection with a recruiter or employer who has a job offer you are interested in the next step is to take your conversation to the next level with a call. Connect on Skype or get a phone number and set up a phone interview. Often there are multiple interviews but sometimes if the interview goes well enough that might be all you need to get the job! Keep calm when your interview is onAccording to Scott Rosenfield of Men’s Health “when it comes down to two equal candidates, employers hire the guy they'd be more likely to hang out with.” So don’t take yourself too seriously. Keep a calm and friendly attitude in your interview and it will pay off if you are up against uptight competition. twitter networking success guide Posted: 21 Feb 2014 08:24 AM PST HOW TO: Network for Maximum Success on Twitter with Twitter Marketing SoftwareI have used hundreds of Twitter Tools and TweetAdder is by far the most powerful marketing software I have encountered! For that reason I have developed this guide to explain how different features make TweetAdder powerful, and how to use these powerful features for the maximum effect. If you want to see a video that explains some of the core network building features of TweetAdder check out my TweetAdder video review. For a comprehensive look at the most powerful features of this marketing software then give this guide a read. Overview ScreenThe overview screen allows you to monitor the status and activities of all of your account from one convenient table. You can turn each account on or off by clicking on the account, and selecting the on/off button. This is especially useful if you wish to pause updates to an account, or if you are managing an account from a different computer. The user icons on the far left show which accounts are logged in, and which ones are logged off or turned off. To open a user to manage, you can either double click on the row, or select a row and click the "Open User" button. TweetAdder FunctionsThe TweetAdder sidebar is broken down into six components, five are shown to the left because they are the only five that really matter. Search Users to Follow is the menu where you can find users to follow based on several different criteria. As you use the different features for searching for users within this menu you build out a "To Follow List" which you can then get TweetAdder to slowly crawl through and follow the users that are on it. The most powerful methods for finding users to connect with are listed below in order of most powerful to least. No matter which method of connection building you use try to manually screen the people you follow if possible so that you can pull out people who are inactive, or irrelevant to you. Profile Data SearchThis a very useful tool for finding more targeted followers. I build most of my connections via Profile Data searches because I can narrow my search to people who have interests that are relevant enough to them that they list these keywords in their bio. Following Everyone Followed by or Following of a UserThis is a really cool feature that adds all the followers of a particular user to your 'To Follow' list. You go and find a competitor in your niche and start following their followers in the hopes that they'll follow you back. A powerful way to use this feature is to use people who are similar to you, but very selective about who they follow. If you follow these people as well you initiate connections with people who are probably active (millions of Twitter users are inactive) and have a high likelihood of being influential. Tweet SearchThis a very useful tool for searching through all of the tweets containing your search term and location (optional). What people tweet and what they're actually interested in can be a little bit different, so keep that in mind when using this feature. Twitter tries to put a stop to this sort of thing and will now only produce 20 results at a time, so if you want to use this efficiently you will need to turn automation on let TweetAdder work its in the background. Following Everyone on a Twitter ListTweetadder makes it easy to follow everyone on a Twitter list. Just enter the username and the list name. Following Twitter UsersAfter you've found people you want to follow and added them to your To Follow list, you then have the option to follow people as and when you please, or you can turn on the the automation and the program will automatically follow people for you. Then all you have to do is to turn on the automation and leave it running on your computer and your job is done. This sort of automation is not allowed by Twitter so Tweet Adder sets delays between each follow so that Twitter can't detect the automation. You also have the option to limit the amount of users you follow each day and this is especially important when you get to 2000 followers as Twitter starts to put a stop to excessive following that's often used in Twitter marketing. Until you get to 2,000 followers Twitter will stop you from following more that 2k people, so at this point manual network building with tools like Manage Twitter will help to speed things along. Once you break through the 2k threshold Twitter caps the number of people you can follow in a day at 1,000 people. Unfollowing Twitter UsersI don't use this feature of TweetAdder, although it is a smart option for anyone who wants to automate Twitter connection building. I prefer to invest some time every day and use the Twitter Tool Manage Twitter because it offers more options for sorting those people who are not following me so that I can unfollow the most inactive people first. Here is what the unfollow Twitter users screen looks like: Thank You MessagesUsing this function allows you to automatically interact with your followers as soon as they follow you back, and this can be a powerful way to get onto the radar of new people in your network. Many people abuse this feature, and for that reason I rarely check my dms. I recommend that you avoid their mistakes and don't start off on the wrong foot by sending a shameless self-promoting message and link. The right way to use this feature is by sending a message that introduces yourself and thanks them for connecting. RSS FeedAlthough I don't use this feature because I like to tweet everything manually I recognize its power for automating a stream of tweets to an account that you want to manage automatically. If you are pressed for time to Tweet this tool could be a serious time saver. Video DemoI have also developed a video review of TweetAdder that you might find useful. You need to download and use TweetAdder to really appreciate it. Luckily, you can download TweetAdder and test drive it for free. Then, if you are interested in purchasing TweetAdder, and you buy it through my link: http://twittertoolsreviews.pusku.com/go/tweetadderI will send you a Twitter Tools Book Gold Edition bonus package, worth $198! This package includes:
ConculsionAs you can undoubtedly tell by this guide TweetAdder is a very powerful network building tool that you should start using asap to build your online brand. Let me know what you think of TweetAdder and this guide in the comments below!

Twitter Promotion: How to Encourage Others to Promote for You Posted: 21 Feb 2014 03:00 AM PST Do you use social media to promote your product, service or events? Are you wondering how you can use Twitter to help get more visibility and sales? To learn how Twitter can be used to encourage others to promote for you, this episode of the Social Media Marketing podcast gives you insight into the subject. More About This ShowThe Social Media Marketing podcast is a show from Social Media Examiner. It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing. The show format is on-demand talk radio (also known as podcasting). In this episode, you'll discover five different ways you can use Twitter to promote what you have to offer. Share your feedback, read the show notes and get the links mentioned in this episode below! Listen NowPodcast: Play in new window | Download | Embed You can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, Stitcher, SoundCloud or Blackberry. Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show: Twitter PromotionWhy Twitter promotion? I believe that Twitter is the most frictionless form of social media communication. You can also create an enormous amount of buzz on Twitter. Here are five techniques to help you promote and boost excitement around what you have to offer. #1: Include a Customized Tweet Button on Every Single Page of Your ProductWhen you have several pages on your product, service or event site, it's important to have the same tweet on every single page. The first thing you need to do is create a custom Twitter share button. The button options available are Share a Link, Follow, Hashtag and Mention. You want to choose the Share a Link button. The next step is to click on the option to include a different URL, rather than the Use the Page URL option. In this particular case, you'll use the home page of your product, service or event. So when someone clicks on that tweet button to share on Twitter, they'll be directed back to one central place, which is your home page. The next option is Tweet Text. This is where you can write in your own custom tweet. Also make sure you check the Show Count option, because it will display the total number of tweets. You'll hear why it's important to show the number of tweets on your sales page, and the advantages to the Via and Recommend Twitter ID options. The last step is to add a hashtag. When you visit our event page for Social Media Marketing World, you'll notice that once you click on the tweet button, not only does it have our customized tweet, but it also includes the URL for the home page and the hashtag for the event. Once you have created your custom tweet, it'll give you a little piece of code that you can put in a sidebar widget if you're on WordPress, or embed the HTML where you want it. The good news is that it works over and over again. Here are a few tips on how to craft your tweet:
Listen to the show to discover the types of phrases you should use in your custom tweet. #2: Embed a Twitter Widget on Every Page That You Use to PromoteWhen you visit the event page for Social Media Marketing World, you'll see the widget below. On the event page it's live. You can see the hashtag at the top, and underneath are the tweets relating to the event. The reason that they're all in one place is because of the hashtag. As you scroll through the tweets, you'll see the people who have clicked on the custom tweet, plus those who are talking about the event in general. You'll hear why the value proposition in something like this on your sales page is huge, and the reason why I decided to have it on every single page at Social Media Examiner. To create a Twitter widget, you first need to log into Twitter and then visit here. Next, click on Create New and then Search. You will see that it asks for Search Query. This is where you want to add the hashtag. I would advise you to check the box that says Only Show Top Tweets. This is really important. Otherwise you'll see every single retweet. Another box you should definitely check is the Safe Search Mode. This excludes all the profanity and sensitive content. The next step is to choose the Height and the Theme. You'll find out what height I chose for our widget, and why I selected Opt Out of Tailoring. Now you have a piece of code that you can embed into a widget in WordPress or into your blog. Listen to the show to discover why combining #1 and #2 is extremely powerful. #3: Create a Transactional TweetOnce you have the Twitter widget in place, the next step I want to show you is what I call the transactional tweet. The objective of this type of tweet is to get someone who has just purchased, registered or signed up to share their excitement about the transaction. In our particular case, once attendees have purchased a ticket, they are sent to a special page where there is a section in bold that says, "Tweet your excitement!" Once they click on this link, a tweet pops up in Twitter that says the person is attending Social Media Marketing World. The rest of it is very similar to the customized tweet. People are so excited when they make a purchase decision. Every single day, a ton of people are tweeting out that they are attending our event. It creates an enormous amount of buzz. Here are a few tips on how to create a transactional tweet:
The end result is that you now have a transactional tweet. So when someone has made a purchase, he or she can click on the tweet and let everyone know. The magic happens because you've got the hashtag, which will show up inside of your Twitter widget. Listen to the show to hear what type of wording you need to use in the transactional tweet. #4: Create Shout-Out TweetsI recently started to experiment with shout-out tweets. The objective is to get people to engage with other people using some of the techniques in this article. One of the options you can offer to people who have purchased a ticket for an event is the ability to tweet their favorite presenters. The buzz and excitement that this creates are unbelievable. This type of tweet is very easy to create. You go to ClicktoTweet to craft a tweet. For this to be a promotional tweet, it's very important to put a word in front of the Twitter user ID such as "Hi" or "Hey." This will then be seen publicly in that person's Twitter feed. Also remember to include the hashtag. Once you have the simple URL, you can start to hot link it. It's another way to get promotion back to your sales page and aggregate all of those tweets into the Twitter widget. Listen to the show to find out how it can be effective if you have a conference or event to promote. #5: Pre-craft TweetsIf you only have time to do one of these steps, then this is the one you should focus on. The objective with pre-crafted tweets is to get important people to share the content for you, and it'll also make it easy for you to schedule on your own Twitter account. You need to provide everything so a person can just copy and paste into Twitter. This comes back to frictionless marketing. You'll hear how you can easily use this type of tweet for presenters to share on Twitter and why it's a no-brainer for affiliates. The use of pre-crafted tweets gets you one step closer to people promoting for you. I hope this has given you a lot of insight into how we promote our events at Social Media Examiner, and that you try these techniques for your product, service or event. Listen to the show to hear another way you can use pre-crafted tweets so your customers can help spread the word. Discovery of the WeekWhen you are involved in a Twitter chat, it's important that it's near enough to real time because of how intense these chats can become. I recently discovered a new web-based app called tchat.io. It has a very simple interface. First you type in your hashtag. You can sign in with Twitter if you want. This allows you to tweet from within the app and it will automatically add the hashtag to all of your tweets. This means that all of the tweets are aggregated around that particular hashtag. One of the cool things that I like about the app is that it allows you to mute retweets. This app is close to real time and as the tweets appear, you can click on the one in question, then hit reply, quote it, favorite it or retweet it. It has all the basic functionality you would expect of any good hashtag-based Twitter chat client. So if you are involved with Twitter chats, I strongly recommend that you check it out. Call in and leave your social media–related questions for us and we may include them in a future show. Listen to the show to learn more and let us know how this works for you. Other Show MentionsThis week's podcast is sponsored by Social Media Marketing World. Social Media Marketing World 2014 is our physical mega-conference, which is set to return to San Diego, California on March 26, 27 and 28. We are so excited about this conference. If you look at our hashtag #smmw14, you'll see all of the people who are excited about attending this conference. How to Know if Your Social Media Activities Are Working Posted: 21 Feb 2014 01:33 AM PST Do you know if your social media strategy is working? Are you looking for an easier way to track your social activities? In this article I'll show you how to find the most valuable social data and actionable insights. The result, improve your social media strategy on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Finding the Needles in the HaystackAs marketers, we're on a mission to track and measure our efforts and their success. We collect information on almost everything you can think of, from purchase history and demographics to psychographic data and everything in between. The abundance of data has opened up a complicated web of options. It's important to know how to find the useful data that helps us make strategic decisions. The following three tips will help you focus on what matters. #1: Review the Posts Tab on Facebook InsightsFacebook has given marketers access to a ton of useful information with their Page Insights. Most people use this data to measure their success. We're going to look at how to use it to refine your strategy. Timing Your Posts Start by going to your Facebook page and clicking on See Insights in the navigation bar at the top of the admin panel. This takes you to the Overview page by default. Click on the Posts option in the Insights navigation bar. This will open up the When Your Fans Are Online insights. This information is updated weekly and is great to use for adjusting your publishing schedule. Make sure you're posting within 30 minutes of your users' peak activity times. I recommend you test slightly prior to those times so that the post already has some engagement before the majority of your fans are online. The next step is something a lot of people miss. Look at the vertical bars over each day of the week. Every audience has different habits. Sometimes one day of the week offers a 50-100% larger audience. These are opportunities you don't want to overlook. If you have days that stand out, plan on publishing important posts around them. Next, check for the most active times for each day. The Post Insights page shows you the current day by default. Compare it to other days of the week by scrolling over them to see a line comparison of user activity. There may be no big difference in activity times, but it always pays to check. I've had extremely successful posts come from opportunities I discovered by checking this data. Now that you've got the timing down, let's move on to your post formats. Tracking Format Preferences Over the past few years, there's been a shift toward more visual content. Facebook fans were ignoring most link posts and going right for image or video posts, so many social media managers responded by focusing more on entertaining visual content to keep engagement up. To combat the high amount of low-value visual content being published and push more valuable news feed content, Facebook now previews larger images for link posts. This has helped boost engagement for link posts while making it easier for managers to drive more traffic from the network to their websites and blogs. While the new format levels the playing field for all post types, it's extremely important to base your strategy on what your fans prefer. In the Posts section of your Insights dashboard, next to When Your Fans Are Online, click on Post Types. You'll see a simple bar graph that shows you the average engagement for the different post types you've published on your page. Just because one post type receives the highest amount of engagement doesn't mean it's the only post type you should be publishing. You should constantly test new tactics. If you want to switch up your publishing style, test different post types and use this information to set a temporary post type mix. This first section is pretty straightforward, but when you scroll down you see a chart of all of your recent page posts. Something a lot of people miss is the ability to sort all of these posts by the different metrics. Depending on how social media works in your overall digital marketing strategy, you will want to look at different information; post reach versus post engagement, for example. Sort your posts to reveal connections you may have missed. By going through your top-performing posts in the page's entire history (relative to your strategy and KPIs), you can start to identify some qualitative factors you might not have thought about before. Here's a list of what to look for:
Use the information you gather from the Posts tab to serve up the content your fans want when they're most likely to see it. Use these tips to refine your Facebook strategy. #2: Use Twitter Tools to Expand ReachAlthough Twitter doesn't directly offer insights, there are a couple of third-party tools I recommend checking out for different reasons. Finding Influencers With TweetReach While the breakdown TweetReach gives you for the estimated reach, exposure and impressions of your last 50 tweets is great for reporting, it's nothing to act on strategically. The most valuable information here is the Contributors section. The Contributors section shows you all of the users who contributed most to your reach during the last 50-tweet period. Add these users to a Twitter list and monitor that list using a dashboard like TweetDeck. This helps remind you to reengage them on a regular basis. As this list grows and you increase your engagement with these users, you'll see your engagement, reach and influence grow exponentially. Ranking Engaging Tweets With Buffer The new business accounts from Buffer let you sort your tweets/posts by the amount of engagement they receive (much like the Facebook Posts Insights above). This gives you the same opportunity to scan through your top-performing tweets and break down all of the commonalities you may have missed. I recommend going through at least your 50 top tweets to look for these things:
Once you find some common themes, test their validity by sending out new tweets using the successful elements you discovered. Be sure to test one variable at a time to limit the assumptions you're making. Revealing Follower Activity With Followerwonk The next tool I've recently grown fond of is Followerwonk. Use their Analyze Followers feature to discover the best times to send out your tweets. Enter your Twitter username, and in the drop-down menu, be sure to change the option from Analyze Users They Follow to Analyze Their Followers. In just a few seconds, you see an hourly breakdown of your followers' activity. Note: As an added bonus, it's easy to sync Followerwonk's data with your Buffer schedule. Just click the orange button. Use these three Twitter tools to build strategic relationships with influencers, optimize your updates and tweet according to when your followers are online, all of which will extend your overall reach. #3: Optimize Your Pinterest ActivityNot that long ago, Pinterest rolled out a native analytics platform that focuses on the relationship between your website and Pinterest. While the data is useful and worth monitoring, it doesn't really offer insights that can impact your strategy on the network itself. PinReach, which was recently purchased by Tailwind, has a free version that offers a lot of value when it comes to delivering useful data. Analyzing Pin Engagement Use the Pin Inspector feature to review your last 50 pins. Go through the same process you did with Facebook and Twitter to find the top-performing pins and uncover any consistent themes or styles you can identify in them. Tracking Category Engagement The Category Heatmap section shows a viral heatmap and an engagement heatmap. Both of these charts provide a strong visual breakdown of where you're pinning versus where you receive the most engagement. Use this information to help you decide which categories you should focus your attention on and which aren't worth your time. Whatever you do, don't pin content to those categories that aren't producing relevant results. Instead, get creative with the content you're producing and tie it to a category or theme that's doing well. As always, test everything before making it a regular part of your strategy. Over to You Data measurement is a broad subject and I didn't delve into insights for all of the social networks you may be using. To get better at Instagram, check out Nitrogr.am. Here's what you need to know about insights for LinkedIn company pages. For Google+, read this article. Meanwhile, use the tools and tips from this article to help you refine your strategic approach to Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. What do you think? Build a #Powerful #Twitter #Network Posted: 20 Feb 2014 06:59 PM PST Having a million followers means nothing if none of them pay attention to you. The more responsive you can make your Twitter list the more valuable it will be for you to spread your tweets. With a responsive Twitter list you can get many more retweets, and you will develop an audience that is more likely to engage and interact with your content. A more responsive audience means that your content will get more shares, and more comments, and achieving your online goals will become easier overall. If you want a more responsive Twitter list the following 10 tips will help you achieve that goal: 1. List People OftenA "follow" does not have the significance it once used to. For people who have thousands of followers a single new follower may or may not be important, especially since there are many marketers who use Twitter Marketing Software to auto-follow people. Twitter lists, on the other hand, are usually hand picked by people. People are more likely to pay attention if you list them. If you want to make sure you get the attention of the person you are listing tell them you added them to one of your lists! The more you list, the more the law or reciprocity will kick in and cause others to list you back. List and be listed. 2. Tell your Facebook Friends about TwitterOn Facebook you can let your friends know that you are on Twitter in a variety of ways. The more ways you tell your Facebook friends you are on Twitter, the better your odds are of getting them to follow you. You can post a status update saying: Are you on Twitter? If so post your user name below and let's connect there as well! When I posted status update like this it got huge response from my friends and helped me build deeper connections with my network. Another way you can tell people you are on Twitter, without directly saying so, is to import your tweets using a Twitter application, like Selective Tweets. Selective Tweets automatically imports tweets with the hashtag #fb. Another thing I do on Facebook is include a link to my Twitter account in the "Websites" section of my info tab. 3. Connect with Your Existing ContactsUsing the Find Friends feature of Twitter you can quickly connect with your friends who are already on Twitter. As you can see from the image above there are about five different ways that you can find your friends on Twitter. 4. Follow Highly Targeted peopleBy following highly targeted people on Twitter you greatly increase the chance that they will follow you back. One strategy I use to build highly relevant connections is to use TweetAdder to follow everyone on a Twitter list. You can learn more about TweetAdder here, or check out my video review of TweetAdder. 5. Unfollow Unnecessary PeopleThe more inactive and irrelevant people you can unfollow, the better. Why follow people who have not tweeted in a month, or who use the default Twitter avatar? The free tool Manage Twitter makes it easy to unfollow people who do not follow you and have not tweeted in 30 days or more, or taken the time to change their default profile picture. 6. Engage With Your List!Getting people to follow you is really just the first the first step in connecting with them. The real connections happens through conversation, and engagement. Retweet your followers and reach out to them, and they will be more likely to do the same for you. If you look at many of the Twitter Giants like @BrianSolis or @ChrisBrogan you will notice that many of their tweets are conversational, and this is why their networks are so powerful. People are much more likely to pay attention to you if you pay attention to them. 7. Be a Trust AgentI'm not saying don't have a business, I'm just saying it's going to work out best for you if you do not sell directly with your tweets. Try to build trust with the people you interact with, and if you do this they will consider your products and services on their own. 8. Time Your Tweets for Maximum ResponseThere is a cool Twitter Tool that I recently came across called buffer that simplifies this process. When you add a tweet to your puffer it will automatically schedule at pre-determined time. Buffer streamlines and simplifies tweeting, and you can have up to ten tweets in your buffer for free. How to Use Google+ for Social Media Contests Posted: 20 Feb 2014 12:06 PM PST Is Google+ part of your marketing strategy? Are you looking for creative ways to run contests and giveaways on Google+? Although there are restrictions on using Google+ for contests, there are ways for you to promote your contests successfully on Google+. Interestingly, most brands and businesses on Google+ aren't taking advantage of this opportunity, and they're missing out. In this article, you'll discover how three brands leverage Google+ as a core component of their social contest strategy and the keys to their success. Google+ Contest RulesRunning contests, giveaways, promotional offers, etc., has become a staple part of online strategy for business owners and marketers. They're used to stimulate engagement, build community, encourage user-generated content, create a unique experience and increase brand awareness. First let's look at the rules. Unfortunately, the Google+ platform has specific restrictions when it comes to hosting contests. In fact, Google+'s Contests and Promotions Policy clearly states: "You may not run contests, sweepstakes, or other such promotions ("Promotion") directly on Google+ or in a manner that requires use of G+ features or functionality." For many people, that's a show-stopper right there. The good news is that it's possible to leverage contests to engage your community on Google+ without violating their contest and promotions policy. The second line of their policy is the most important to pay attention to: "You may display a link on Google+ to a separate site where your Promotion is hosted so long as you (and not Google) are solely responsible for your Promotion and for compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations in the jurisdiction(s) where your Promotion is offered or promoted." With this in mind, let's have a look at how some brands promote their contests on Google+. #1: Ask for Compelling ExperiencesTo engage your audience at a deeper level, asking them to participate with a like, plus or a share isn't enough. You need to facilitate an experience that excites and motivates them to action. Google launched an experience-based campaign to drum up excitement around their newest product, Google Glass. Instead of telling people how Google Glass would change their lives, they asked their communities to submit ideas of how they would use Google Glass via Google+ and Twitter using the hashtag #ifihadglass. As you can imagine, the submissions poured in. The bait? Selected applicants were offered a chance to preorder their Google Glasses in advance. Note that submissions using #ifihadglass are carefully classified as "applications" to avoid any conflict with Google's contest and promotions policy. The fun doesn't stop there. After selected applications received their Google Glasses, Google launched the next phase of their campaign and encouraged people to share their unique experience of life through Google Glass, using the hashtag #throughglass. The phased strategy in this campaign is key because it keeps the campaign momentum and community engagement buzzing as user-generated content and engagement continue to promote their product. The beauty of this contest is that it tapped into their audience's passion and brought it to life through interactive experience and participation. #2: Make Recognition the PrizeIt's common for marketers to rely on dazzling prizes to incentivize participation. However, if you're hosting a contest solely using Google+, traditional incentives and prizes aren't an option. It's time to tap into the power of recognition. To celebrate the opening of their new Google+ fan page, Converse sneakers launched a creative competition that invited agencies and their community to show off their favorite "creative hack" for their Converse sneakers. Right off the bat, Converse was smart and stacked the deck by inviting top agencies to participate in advance. As a result, they knew that they would have awesome visual and multimedia content to inspire their community and generate excitement. Next, Converse cultivated their audience by launching a special Chuck Hackers Google+ community, a dedicated space for their #chuckhack fans to come together, share and engage with each other. Using the extremely creative content submitted by agencies as a springboard, Converse took engagement to the next level and opened up participation to the broader community. The secret to Converse's success was leveraging the spirit of their fun, creative and bold brand to launch their Google+ presence. Then, they harnessed the power of Google+ as a platform to encourage and recognize their community's #chuckhack contributions to the world. #3: Integrate ContestsPerhaps the easiest way to integrate a contest on Google+ is to incorporate it into a larger campaign. Remember, according to Google's contest and promotions policy, it's acceptable to "display a link on Google+ to a separate site where your Promotion is hosted." Pepsi uses Google+ to target and engage fans to participate in their pop-culture #LiveForNow campaign. This campaign promotes multiple contests across multiple social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Google+. While the contest is not hosted exclusively (or directly) on Google+, their Google+ presence is almost solely dedicated to promoting and engaging with fans to encourage participation. This strategy is often underutilized on Google+, mainly because businesses and brands are concerned about violating Google+ contest and promotions policy. But as you see here, this is a totally acceptable (and effective) strategy for promoting contests and increasing engagement within your Google+ community. Conclusion Promoting and integrating contests on Google+ is a great way to elevate your project or brand on Google+. If managed correctly, they boost engagement and set you apart from the competition. When running contests, remember to create a strong promotion strategy on Google+ to leverage your community there too. What do you think? Have you considered leveraging contests on Google+? If not, have these examples inspired you to consider integrating contests into your Google+ activities? Please leave your questions and comments in the box below. Podcasting for Business: Top Podcasters Share Success Tips Posted: 20 Feb 2014 04:50 AM PST Are you thinking of starting a podcast for your business? Wondering how top podcasters use their podcasts to grow their businesses? To learn how podcasting can help build your business, I interview Michael Hyatt and Chris Brogan for this episode of the Social Media Marketing podcast. More About This ShowThe Social Media Marketing podcast is a show from Social Media Examiner. It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing. The show format is on-demand talk radio (also known as podcasting). This episode is a panel discussion from Social Media Success Summit. It includes myself, Michael Hyatt from the This Is Your Life podcast and Chris Brogan from the Human Business Way podcast. The panel shares an inside look at some of the podcast secrets you can use to enhance your sales. You'll learn about podcast frequency, how to promote your offers and ways to get your audience to take action. Share your feedback, read the show notes and get the links mentioned in this episode below! Listen NowPodcast: Play in new window | Download You can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, Stitcher or Blackberry. Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show: Podcasting for BusinessHow podcasting can help your business Michael shares that the most obvious way it has helped his business is with reach. He gets as many podcast downloads a month for This Is Your Life as he gets unique visitors to his blog. His audience has doubled because of it. He believes that you get a different kind of follower with your podcast. Many people have said that they have never read his blog; instead they've connected with him through his podcast. You'll discover why podcasting is more intimate and why this type of connection has benefited Michael's business. Chris shares his story of how he got into podcasting in 2005, when it was still the early days for this type of platform. He started an event called Podcamp with Christopher Penn. Back then it wasn't easy for people to consume a podcast, so it wasn't a great time for the independent podcaster. A year or so ago, Chris decided to jump back in again and started The Human Business Way. You'll find out why Chris puts in a lot of effort to make sure his show is a very personal experience. Listen to the show to find out why a podcast is a great platform to build a community around. Podcast frequency Chris has tried all different schedules for his podcast. He originally put his show out weekly, then more frequently than that and has also gone weeks between shows. He originally told everybody that he would close the show at 100 episodes. This wasn't to hurt his relationship with his community, but to carry out tests as a marketer on the flexibility, expansion and depth of his show. You'll hear how these results helped him with the new show format. Michael's podcast is a weekly show. He tries to deliver it on a Wednesday morning because people count on it. You'll hear the type of content schedule Michael has and what he did last summer when he had a month off to write his book that resulted in only a 10% traffic hit. The take-home lesson is to figure out what your audience expects. You'll hear Chris share the formula that works for his audience and how he gets around people's unwillingness to commit. Listen to the show to find out one of the downsides to having too many podcasts in a short period of time. How to advertise and promote what you offer with your podcast Michael explains how he originally started with ads on the front end, where he knew he had the maximum number of people listening for him to connect with. However, someone graciously suggested to him that he should give before he expects to receive. The listeners who don't know you will want to get straight to the juice. You'll find out what technique works best for Michael and the types of ads he uses. Chris has never had ads on his podcast and he says that it wasn't for any negative reasons. He's still debating how he can make advertising happen. When he promotes his own stuff in the show, he has seen almost no uplift. Michael mentions his own events in his podcast, mainly so people can hear him share why it's important. He feels like he needs high numbers of impressions for somebody to buy a big-ticket item. Listen to the show to learn the techniques you can use to find out the best time to include ads throughout your podcast. What to podcast about Michael reveals that when he writes a blog post, he decides if it can also be a podcast. If it can, he files it away for a future show. He has around 100 blog posts that he will eventually do a podcast on. This allows him to see where the content was weak and make it better or answer a question that wasn't answered previously in the blog post. It enhances the original article and takes it to another level. Chris' show, The Human Business Way, is strictly an interview show. Chris makes sure he interviews people in the business world to whom his community might not ordinarily have access. He also interviews his community members as much as possible. You'll discover why Chris tries hard to make sure his community gets their turn at the microphone. For the Social Media Marketing podcast, I look for two different kinds of people to interview—someone who has an extreme story and someone with extreme knowledge. You can be strategic and use your podcast as an opportunity to develop a relationship with the person you are interviewing. As a business owner, it's a great way to get to know someone. Listen to the show to find out about an interview Chris did that became one of his most listened-to shows ever. Encourage people to act At the very end of Chris's podcast, he calls out people's names and makes sure they feel cared for and loved. The mindset is that people respond to attention and it prompts a response. You'll find out why this technique really works well for Chris and his community. Listen to the show to find out what clear call to action Michael leaves at the end of his show and why as a content producer it can be really motivating. How do you know if your podcast will be a success before you commit? Chris says that you just have to give it a try. He suggests you can make some audio on SoundCloud or AudioBooth first, to see if any one cares for it. You have to try and fail a lot if you want to succeed. Listen to the show to find out what happened when Chris started to produce a video show. Can you build an audience with a podcast, without having a large blog audience? Michael says it goes back to how you define success. He thinks it's easy in the social media space to define it based on the number of listeners. Although it's great to have big numbers, it doesn't always translate into interest, conversion and sales. There are people out there who don't have large platforms but their audience is engaged, which creates success. You've got to try it if you want to succeed. You might discover that an audience on audio receives you better and feels more connected to you than one in a written context. Listen to the show to find out why you need to dial into your community before you jump to another platform. The amount of work that goes into a show Michael explains that when he first started out, it would take him two full days a week to produce a show. This included the preproduction, production and postproduction. So last spring, he decided to hire a producer, which helped a great deal but it still took him a full day per episode. You'll discover how much time Michael has managed to cut off of the production and why his audience hasn't been able to tell the difference. Listen to the show to find out how long it takes Chris to produce a show and why he has the time to do all his own postproduction. Give podcasting a chance Michael advises you to go for it. Everything he has tried has been an experiment. He's discovered that the things he thinks won't work do, and the things that will work don't. Chris advises that you need to fail to succeed. Listen to the show to discover why it's been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in my business life. Other Show MentionsThis week's podcast is sponsored by Social Media Marketing World. Social Media Marketing World 2014 is our physical mega-conference, which is set to return to San Diego, California on March 26, 27 and 28.
