3 Unusual Ways to Build Your Email List With Facebook Apps

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 02:00 AM PDT

social media how toDo you want more email subscribers?

How can you find a targeted audience and encourage them to join your list?

The answer is to leverage the people who already like you: your Facebook fans.

This article shows you three ways brands are using Facebook apps to grab their fans' attentions and encourage them to subscribe to their list.

Why Use Facebook to Find Email Subscribers?

Email converts new customers more effectively than any other digital medium. The key is having the right people on your list—the ones who want to hear what you have to say and are most likely to buy from you. That's where Facebook comes in.

Your Facebook fans are probably fans because they already like your products or services. That's a great start to finding a narrowly targeted audience that's likely to buy from you.

lead funnel

Engage with Facebook fans, capture their email addresses and market to that targeted audience to make sales and partnerships.

A simple lead funnel gives context to the process. By engaging with your Facebook fans, you build trust. From there, you can ask your fans to sign up for emails that share information they're interested in. With strong email and marketing tactics, you end up with sales and long-term customers.

Facebook apps are the easiest way to acquire email addresses for your list, but let's be honest; cool apps won't build your list. You need a smart plan that's based on understanding your audience.

Keep reading to see how three brands are using Facebook's social advantage and apps to grow their email lists.

#1: Crowdsource Product Ideas

A few months ago, Kristina Allen launched Lilypad Candles, a store that sells eco-friendly soy candles. Kristina's email list was nonexistent. She had zero email addresses.

What she did have was a plan. She knew that giveaways are a great way to increase community and even grow her email list, and she wanted to take advantage of that power.

lilypad candles

Lilypad Candles had a goal for using Facebook.

Kristina considered her target audience, what prize would most appeal to that audience and how she could gain emails and feedback via the entry form. She knew she wanted to host the giveaway on her company's Facebook page because she wanted to grow her number of fans in addition to her email list.

Since email lists are most successful when members are truly interested in what you have to share, Kristina opted to give away $100 worth of candles to a randomly selected Facebook fan who opted into her email list.

Offering her fans $100 worth of candles (instead of a big-ticket item like an iPad) helped weed out the people who just wanted to win something and weren't interested in her product.

Kristina used ShortStack to create her giveaway landing page. Notice how she required users to answer a poll about their favorite candle scent.

lilypad facebook app

Make your giveaway entry painless for your fans, but valuable for you.

Kristina included the poll because it was a simple step for her fans, but gave her important information about what her customers were interested in. She can use that feedback to create the products her customers want.

On the first day of the giveaway, her business acquired 200 emails, not to mention new Facebook fans. Pretty impressive for a brand-new company with no email list!

#2: Provide Incentive to Share With Friends

Alter-Ego Comics had never really thought about using Facebook to acquire emails before, but with TabSite's help, they put together a giveaway to celebrate their 10th anniversary.

They offered up three pretty amazing action figures to anyone who liked their Facebook page and entered their name and email into the entry form.

To sweeten the pot (and to drive more traffic and possibly subscriptions), they offered additional entries to fans for every friend they sent over to like the Alter-Ego Comics Facebook page.

alter ego app

Make your giveaway entry painless for your fans, but valuable for you.

Alter-Ego Comics' giveaway tactic worked because in addition to offering a giveaway relevant to their audience, they leveraged friend networks (additional entries for every friend who liked the page) to build their list.

When everything was said and done, 120 people joined their email list. Not bad for their first Facebook giveaway!

#3: Use One Click Actions

Using the ActionSprout Facebook app, UNICEF created a powerful landing page to encourage people to join the list for further information on how they can help Syrian children.

UNICEF is well aware that emotional stories drive action. They've made sure their fans are moved by the poignant images, text and action button.

unicef app

UNICEF uses emotion to find targeted email subscribers interested in a cause.

Anyone who clicks on the I Demand an End! button automatically joins UNICEF's email list. In one or two mouse clicks, UNICEF captures their target audiences' emails and grows their list.

ActionSprout has another feature that is important to marketers: the ability to create a solid call to action within the Facebook news feed by adding a feedback option.

All Facebook updates have the like, comment and share options. With ActionSprout, you can add an option that reinforces your call to action.

UNICEF used that feature to their advantage by including a Demand option.

unicef app news feed post

Giving Facebook users another feedback option reinforces your call to action.

Updates and articles that trigger intense emotion are strongly associated with how people share content online. The Demand option stirs emotions and emboldens Facebook users to demand an end to the abuse of children in Syria.

By using ActionSprout to amplify their message, the UNICEF team was able to spread the word and build the organization's email list at the same time.

The Bottom Line

To build a strong email list that provides high conversions, you must appeal to your target audience and weed out the rest. Emotion is an important motivator whether you're invoking empathy or inspiring fans to take the next step toward a goal. Make sure your acquisition campaign speaks to emotion first, reason and logic second.

Relevance is as important to your campaign as emotion. You don't want just anyone on your email list—you want qualified prospects. Hosting a Facebook giveaway that offers a prize targeted specifically to your optimal subscriber gives you a better chance of finding those prospects.

While you have someone's attention, make the most of that moment. Do some crowdsourcing to find out what products they like or want to see, or encourage them to share the campaign with their friends. Those friends of friends are likely to be quality subscribers as well.

What do you think? What tactics have you used to build your email list? Have you used Facebook apps to increase engagement or subscriptions? Share your experience and ideas in the comments.

get 10000 twitter followers fast

Posted: 09 Mar 2014 11:38 AM PDT

By: Quinn Robins (@Boost4Social on Twitter).

This post contains a podcast I recently recorded with my Australian friend and Twitter Expert Keith Keller.

how-to-get-twitter-followers-fast

Getting-Twitter-Followers-FAST.mp3 (10:15 – 9.38mb)

There are several reasons it is awesome to get tens of thousands of Twitter followers.

Those who have plenty of followers enjoy the benefits of increased influence, more retweets, and a more powerful Twitter network.

These compeling benefits of followers often sparks the question: How do I get more Twitter followers?

From my experience the fastest free way to get twitter followers is by initiating connections by following other people first.

Those who have a marketing budget can gain followers even faster than sending paid traffic to their Twitter account by jump-starting their network and investing into more  Twitter followers.

The more followers you have the more people will respect you as a leader in your niche…

…and the more followers you already have the easier it is to get even more followers.

With many people following you every day it is hard to follow back everyone worth following, but I do my best to follow back the cool people who follow me and especially those who RT my content and engage with me.

If you decided to grow your Twitter network by following other people you should be aware of following limitations that Twitter imp prevent mass following and use should use caution when you are building your network since Twitter is fast to suspend new accounts that follow aggressively.

The first limit Twitter uses stops users from following more than 2,000 people until you have 2,000 followers.  The second limit stops you from following more than 1,000 people a day.  To avoid risking account suspension you should use caution when following others and follow no more than 100 or 200 new accounts a day.

One way to instantly bypass the following limitations is by purchasing Twitter followers from a service like Grow My Twitter Network.

getmoretwitterfollowers.com-logo

Followers are cool so be cool to your followers.  Share high quality content with them that they will want to retweet.

Getting retweets is a great way to spread your content beyond some new network and pick up some new followers in the process.

Many people are willing to follow back if you decide to follow them, so by following these people you can gain many mutual connections.

2,000 high quality people who typically follow back are listed below, in this post.

I have uploaded a .txt file with this list and if you have the program TweetAdder you can download this list and import this .txt file into your "To Follow" queue and follow these people automatically.

Here is a list I created of 2,000 cool people who usually follow back: 2000-follow-back.txt

If you do not own TweetAdder I recommend you grab a copy!  It is a powerful tool for building organic connections on Twitter.

How to get followers on twitter fast with tweet adder

If you decide to buy TweetAdder you can get a free bonus and discount from me if you purchase through my TweetAdder review.

you can follow these people manually by clicking the "Follow" button via the links below.

Tweet-Adder-Software

The 2,000 people on the list in this post are only a small fraction of the people on Twitter who are willing to follow you back. I have built over 100,000 for myself and the businesses I have worked with using this method and I am confident you can do the same.

Many people scan your tweets before following back, so tweet useful and cool content and your follow back ratio will increase. The more cool content you tweet, the more retweets you'll net, and getting more retweets is a great way to get more twitter followers.

List Atlas is a  Twitter lists directory that has many sources for Twitter lists and twitter follow back lists.

There are marketing lists, social media lists, location specific lists, etc.

Here are the 100 top follow back twitter lists compiled by graphics.ms, with thousands of people in these lists ready to follow you back.

twitter-superhero

Once you find a follow back list, or any twitter list that you like, you can import the people on that list into TweetAdder and follow them automatically.  Of course you could manually surf to each profile in your web browser if you want to connect with any of these people.

By building your twitter follower base using the strategy described above you will be able to acquire many followers fast, but your network will not be as strong as if you built connections with people based on shared interests.

You can get 10,000 followers instantly with the service Grow My Twitter Network.

Although TweetAdder software makes building followers easy, it can make your main news feed very noisy.

To avoid too much noise in your Twitter news feed there are a two things you can do.

  1. You can follow only a few people.
  2. You can create Twitter lists and follow those streams instead of your main stream.

Both options work, but I prefer the second option!

Feedback

Feel free to include a link to your Twitter profile in a comment below so that people can find and follow you on Twitter!

How to Analyze Your Social Media Activities With Excel

Posted: 09 Mar 2014 05:05 AM PDT

social media how toAre you looking for a way to analyze the impact of your content?

Do you need a simple system that works?

If you don't have the budget for expensive software, spreadsheets and a little of your time can produce some useful data.

In this article I'll show you how to analyze the engagement and impact of your social media posts using Excel.

Why Analyze?

No matter the size of your business, when it comes to social media you want to build two things: engagement and community.

To ensure that you deliver great content that resonates with your fans and followers, you need to track, test and measure the posts you put on your social networks.

It's really that simple.

Here's how:

#1: Build Your Spreadsheet

To begin, open Excel and create 14 columns that will contain the following categories to incorporate all of the information you need on your social media updates and posts:

  • Date
  • Network
  • Categories
  • Subcategories
  • Target
  • Calls to action
  • Meta-tags
  • Posts
  • Impressions
  • Comments (replies)
  • Likes (favorites)
  • Shares (retweets)
  • Clicks
  • Total engagement
categories-columns

An example spreadsheet (target, meta-tags, posts and impressions hidden).

The last four columns are where you store the engagement numbers for your content. Every network has three basic engagement actions: like, comment and share. Even on Instagram, which does not have a repost function built into it, there's user behavior of reposting and tagging the original author.

Use this spreadsheet to store data and analyze your content.

#2: Identify Categories and Subcategories

You'll need to decide on the information below and make a note of it before moving on to step #4 below where you fill in the spreadsheet.

Categories

Base your categories on the major topics of your posts and use them to identify major trends in content performance across each network. Examples of categories are:

Create as many categories as you like, but keep them manageable and general. Save the specifics for subcategories.

Subcategories

Break down categories into smaller subcategories. This enables you to identify microtrends, as well as which pieces of content work the best and the worst. Based on the categories above, examples could include:

  • Specific product names or features.
  • Specific names of holidays or campaigns you're running for a particular season.
  • Specific website names from which you pull content or categories of topics for articles such as "humor," "lifestyle" or "beauty."

Subcategories can be as specific as you like, but keep them thematic. Each subcategory should have at least three posts; otherwise it may be too specific and better suited as a meta-tag (more on that later).

Keep your categories broad and use subcategories to drill down. Image Source: iStockPhoto.

#3: Outline Your Targets and Calls to Action

These two columns require the most forethought and a good understanding of your target market and business goals. You'll need this information to fill out these columns on your spreadsheet.

Target

The target is whom you're speaking to with your content. Your business may have multiple targets based on the people and decision-makers who engage with your content and purchase your products. For the sake of simplicity, we will use "male" and "female" as target examples.

However, I encourage you to spend time considering the different types of people in your audience and build context around those individuals to inform your content strategy.

Calls to Action

CTAs take many forms, depending on the individual goals of the post in each category. Just keep in mind that not all posts need CTAs and not all CTAs must be related to products.

Examples of CTAs include:

  • Subscribe
  • Visit website
  • Buy now
  • Share
calls-to-action-column

Enter your calls to action to help you monitor your success.

Meta-tags

For a much deeper analysis on your types of content, you should use additional meta-tags to describe the individual elements of the content itself.

Keywords, image descriptions (such as person, object, colors, size or orientation) and even tone descriptors for the copy (such as humorous or excited) can be used as meta-tags.

These tags help isolate trends in creative content so you can select more engaging images and write more dynamic copy for your posts.

#4: Collect Your Data

Time to fill in your spreadsheet! There are a number of ways to do this, depending on the networks you use.

Below is an example of a spreadsheet for a retail company using the above-defined categories, subcategories, targets and meta-tags.

example-spreadsheet

Populate your spreadsheet with post details.

There's a lot of information to gather, but it's all easy to find.

Twitter Analytics has an Export feature for your last 500 tweets, and Facebook Insights can be exported in 180-day chunks. Export regularly to make sure your data is current.

Use a tool like bit.ly to keep track of your link clicks. If you tend to post the same link multiple times, make sure you're attributing your click to the right content by using tools like HootSuite's Click Report or BufferApp to track which specific posts generate the clicks. Each of these tools has free versions that allow you to measure posts on multiple networks.

#5: Sort Your Data

To identify your best-performing content across all of your networks, sort the Total Engagement column in descending order.

engagement-sorted-spreadsheet

Sort by Total Engagement.

The best-performing posts in terms of engagement show at the top of the column.

post-sorted-spreadsheet

After sorting by Total Engagement, your most successful posts show at the top of the spreadsheet.

To find the best-performing posts for specific social networks like Twitter or Instagram, filter first by Network, then by Total Engagement.

twitter-sorted-spreadsheet

Filter your spreadsheet to find the posts with the highest engagement on each network.

#6: Analyze Categories

The next step is to manually filter for the categories and subcategories you're interested in reviewing.

filtered-spreadsheet

This spreadsheet is filtered to show only Product category posts.

Excel is very literal, so if you include more than one category or subcategory assigned to content, you'll need to use the "contains" input in the Excel Filter feature, rather than selecting the check boxes. Use this setting to see the rows in the column that have multiple subcategories assigned, and those with just one.

multiple-filtered-spreadsheet

Use the "contains" filter to show Product category posts that cross into multiple subcategories.

Once you identify the top posts in your categories, it's time to analyze them for post copy, sentence structure and images (if applicable). What trends can help you optimize content for each network?

Here are examples of three posts that promoted the same link.

sweater-posts-comparison

A comparison of three posts promoting the same link shows that engagement was highest with men.

In this case, analysis shows that the shorter post lengths received more engagement. Among these similar posts about sweaters, the post using two different images generated a higher click-through rate with males than with females.

Conclusion

You don't have to rely on intuition to find out which posts perform best for you. Use Excel to reveal important insights about post engagement in nearly real time and make more informed decisions about your content strategy.

What do you think? How are you currently measuring the impact of your content? Do you have other strategies or tools that you use? Please leave your questions and comments in the box below.
