What's New This Week?Twitter Allows Direct Messages From All Followers: Up until now, you could only send a direct message on Twitter when the other person followed you back. Now you can change your setting so that anyone can send you a direct message even if you do not follow him or her back.
LinkedIn Unveils Recruiter Mobile: "A mobile app that helps recruiters interact with candidates like you when they're out and about."
Foursquare Opens Ads: "All a business owner needs to do is go to foursquare.com/ads and build their ad—by choosing a great photo of their space and either offering a special or highlighting a great customer tip." It is the best way to effectively manage following and unfollowing large numbers of people on Twitter. Not only can you follow and unfollow en masse, but you can also focus your search criteria to get the most out of those you choose follow. How I use ManageFlitterI use ManageFlitter every day to first follow 100 accounts and then unfollow 100 accounts that aren't following me back. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how to maximize your presence and influence on Twitter by following accounts that matter and unfollowing those that don't follow you back.
First, I go to the Follow section and select either the Following or Follower tab. Today I decided to follow 99 people that Jim Dougherty from @leaderswest is following. I choose the Fast Select option and select up to 99 people to follow. ManageFlitter sends out a warning that you might get banned from Twitter if you try to follow more than 100 people per day. Next, I go to the Unfollow section. The Not Following back tab should automatically be selected. Now, I need to sort the list so that the people I followed awhile back, and not those I followed today, are listed on the top. Unfollowing recently followed accounts can also get you in trouble with the Twitter police. I select Order and then Follow Order to sort. Marc Jacobs announced a new pop-up store last week. Fashionistas across the world waited with baited breath to see what would be available and went to crack open their designer purses to pull together the cash to grab a piece of it. But they needn’t have bothered – because all they need is their smart phone. The brand will open up its ‘Tweetshop’ during New York Fashion Week from 7th-9th February and will accept tweets, Facebook and Instagram posts as ‘social currency’ for fragrances and accessories. The most creative posts will be entered into a draw for bigger items so we can expect to see a fair few ‘interesting’ posts using the #MJDaisyChain hashtag. It’s a smart move by the designer to promote his already popular Daisy range of products and goes a long way to showcasing the value of social media. We’ve already seen PR opportunities spring up around bitcoin and this finally puts a monetary value on all that social activity we spend our lives spewing out. And it couldn’t have come a moment too soon. I’m often surprised that brands still exist that don’t see the value of social media, or worse still, think it’s something they should be doing so make a half-arsed attempt and watch it fall flat when it hasn’t increased sales by 150% in one month. Brands like Marc Jacobs can afford a PR stunt like this but the fallout can only be good and will trickle down to SME’s who can use it to influence their own social media campaigns and content. When the shop opens on Friday I have no doubt the hashtag will be busy and will prove far more rewarding to Marc Jacobs than any advertising money he could have spent or amount of product it will cost him. Social media isn’t the magic solution to any company but it’s now so entrenched in daily life and in the PR/Marketing mix that it cannot be ignored – no matter what level you choose to pitch it at. Got a fashion designer’s budget? Great, but that’s not the point. Perhaps the less the budget, the more creative the team you need. Either way – there’s never been a better time to get social, or a better example of how to do it.
