Viral Tweet Test Results Part 2: Timeline & Transmission Rates

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 12:50 AM PDT

The first meaty bit of data I've pulled out of the results is a timeline of the growth activity including retweets, comments and clicks through to the page. I've also marked the times when popular users retweeted and when it first hit the "Trending Topics" list.

And here are some rough numbers based on the first day of the experiment (after which activity slowed to a trickle):

Total % of Clicks % of Comments % of Tweets
% columns show transmission rates (ie % of people exposed to page who Tweeted it)
Clicks 1,826 N/A 13.75% 15%
Comments 251 13.75% N/A 91.6%
Tweets 274 15% 91.6% N/A

I'll be pulling more complex data out of the results also, including an attempt at actually mapping the spread of the Viral Test Tweet through Tweets, followers and retweets. And as before, if you can think of any other data points I may be missing, please let me know.

5 LinkedIn Company Page Tips to Enhance Your Marketing

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 11:42 PM PDT

Jason Miller

social media how toDo you use LinkedIn for business?

Do you have a LinkedIn company page?

In this article, I'll show you how to get the most from your LinkedIn company page, in five easy steps.

Why a LinkedIn Company Page?

The benefits of a well-oiled LinkedIn company page include engaging followers with company news, updates, events and relevant content.

There's also the improved search engine rankings as LinkedIn pages often perform well in company searches.  And let's not forget lead generation opportunities from your content marketing.

In fact, research shows that 50% of LinkedIn members are more likely to purchase from companies when they engage with them on LinkedIn.

Here's how to make your LinkedIn company page work for you:

#1: Optimize Your LinkedIn Page

Showcase what your business has to offer. Smart marketers who build out their products and services page tend to attract twice as many company followers than those who don't.

Use this page to tell members what you do best and give them compelling reasons to follow you.

Remember that you can link to just about anything from your products and services page, including your latest and greatest white papers, case studies or how-to content.

You'll best attract customers when you turn your products, services or anything else relevant to your business into focal points. Here are just a few examples of what to feature prominently:

  • Products: The software you sell or the apps you've built
  • Services: A list of your résumé writing services or your tax consulting brochure
  • Other: Webinars you host or your company's white papers or ebooks
    hubspot products

Use the products and services page to raise awareness of your brand, promote career opportunities and educate potential customers on your products and services.

Company pages are also very SEO-friendly. Google previews up to 156 characters of your page's text. Be sure to edit your description so that it leads with powerful, keyword-rich sentences. Plus, members can search for companies by keyword on LinkedIn, so include words and phrases that describe your business, expertise and industry focus.

Finally, remember to include your company contact information, descriptions of offerings and your areas of expertise. Your primary attributes can also function as keyword tags.

Once you've done that, ask your customers to recommend the products and services they favor. Authentic advocacy equals credible endorsement!

#2: Engage Your Audience

With LinkedIn company pages, you can now like and share content as a company. Before, you could only do so as an individual. This is a big change, so use it to engage other members!

For example, your company page admins can like and respond to member comments that are made in response to something you post on your company page. Consider sharing your customers' and prospects' content—from their corporate blogs, product updates and company posts—to get these kinds of interactions going. And don't forget content from their employees! You'll develop trust with buyers while developing a more professional corporate brand identity.

Hands down, content that's customized to your followers' and customers' professional interests resonates the most.

With LinkedIn's targeted updates, you can easily tailor your message to your audience. For example, when you create an update, you can choose to share it with "all followers" or to a "targeted audience."

Choose the latter to send your update to a subset of followers based on geography, industry, company size or level of seniority. Just as with any social network, LinkedIn is a community where targeted engagement is essential for success.

targeted company update

Company updates allow your administrators to directly engage with viewers and followers of your company page. You can post and share items like company news, promotions, relevant industry articles and YouTube videos.

When you update from your company page, use these two essential tips for creating compelling content:

  • Think like a journalist. Don't bury the lead! Concise intros and snappy headlines are more likely to result in higher engagement than long, dry copy. You have only moments to show your audience why they should care, so being succinct is crucial. Grab your readers' attention right away by starting your update with your most important thought.
  • Make your content valuable and "snackable." Develop quality content that is quick to consume, so members will want to share it with their connections and networks. In fact, our data shows that the most successful updates include a picture, chart, video or link to an article. When you do not have a link or image to include, engage your audience by asking a question.

Lastly, keep in mind that professionals will check your updates on multiple devices.

#3: Attract More Followers

The more the merrier on the social merry-go-round. Here are some simple, effective strategies for attracting more followers with your company updates:

  • Engage your colleagues. Employees are 70% more likely to engage with your company updates, so don't forget to ask them to do it! Initiate communication and make it easy for them to respond.
  • Cultivate a larger following with a multi-channel approach. Encourage your teammates to add a link to your company page in their email signatures. If needed, ask your designer for help creating a customized banner or button.
  • Add a Follow button to your website. Your web team can pull code for a Follow button from developer.linkedin.com to add to your blog or website. This lets LinkedIn members follow your company with a single click.
    follow button

Add a Follow button to your website, making it easy to grow your LinkedIn company page follower base.

#4: Follow the 4-1-1 Rule

The 4-1-1 Rule was coined by Tippingpoint Labs and Joe Pulizzi of the Content Marketing Institute. The rule states:

"For every one self-serving tweet, you should retweet one relevant tweet and most importantly share four pieces of relevant content written by others."

4 1 1 rule

Consistent posting: Create an editorial calendar of updates within your company, and highlight relevant third-party material. Then share it with company followers. Image Source: Tippingpoint Labs.

Apply this simple rule to your activity on your LinkedIn company page, and you've struck gold. You'll authentically engage in conversations, build awareness and interact with LinkedIn members without giving the impression that you're a self-centered know-it-all.

For marketers, the 4-1-1 Rule is particularly useful when applied to building relationships with prospective customers. This kind of trust hinges on your ability to foster an informative dialogue regularly. It also keeps you at the front of prospects' minds as they move through the buying phase.

As Jay Baer says, "Sell something, get a customer for a day. Help someone, get a customer for life."

#5: Analyze for the Prize

Company page administrators have access to LinkedIn Analytics that help them better engage with their followers and monitor their success. There is a goldmine of insights available to help you focus and refine your strategy, including:

  • Engagement % — Engagement = interactions + clicks + followers acquired. In other words, this metric answers the question, "Of those who've seen my update, how many are truly engaging with it?" Look at updates with higher engagement rates, and note the type of content, people targeted, date and time. Then you'll know how to optimize future content around what's proven to work.
  • Demographics — From seniority and industry to company size and function, demographics give you a snapshot of your followers. With this information, you can tailor the type of content you share on your company page, as well as the tone in which it's delivered. Demographics will also help you determine segments to target with targeted status updates.
  • How You Compare — Knowing how your company page compares to your competitors' pages is a great way to determine whether you should change your strategy.

Watch this video to learn more about the new LinkedIn company page analytics.

Bonus Tip

Host a company "Lunch & Learn" to evangelize the power of company updates, and share tips and tricks with your team. This can have a significant impact on your company page's overall reach.

Consider third-party apps like GaggleAMP and Addvocate to show employees which updates are most important for your company and are pre-approved for sharing.

Over to You

What do you think? Are you using LinkedIn's company pages to connect your business with the professionals you most want to reach? How do you update your followers on company news, products and services and job openings? Leave your questions and comments in the box below.

  • Turn off alerts for apps like Facebook and Twitter.
  • Turn off location-based apps, or at least the geotracking features of those apps.

#4: Deliver Content With the Right Number of Words and Characters

It's easy to lose track of how many words and characters we've been tapping out for our next tweet. Or whether we've exceeded the optimal number of characters for search engine optimization. Counter apps take the guesswork out of the equation and allow us to keep our focus on the message.

Counter Apps

iOS: MetaCounterCount Words & Characters

#5: Experience New Reading Materials

It's easier than ever to keep up with books on social media (and other nonfiction topics along with great fiction) by using smartphone apps. And while eBook prices are lower than their print counterparts, you can save even more money by borrowing eBooks and audiobooks from participating libraries.

Check out the book apps below and while you're at it, visit your local library in person or online and find out about borrowing eBooks and audiobooks with OverDrive Media Console on iOS and Android.

#6: Find How-To Videos Your Followers Might Enjoy

iOS: MeetupHere & Now

#8: Hang Out on Your Preferred Social Networking Platforms

If you want to view and manage several of your social accounts at once, you could use the official apps for each platform. But that means you have to check at least three different apps. You don't have time for that.

Instead use one of these social media management apps to keep tabs on most of your social efforts in one place. You can even manage multiple profiles.

hootsuite app

Use apps to manage multiple profiles.

Using the written word plus visual content helps grab attention.

iOS: TweegramText on Photo Square

#10: Jot Down Memorable Quotes

What happens to those great tidbits we read and hear? Not much if you can't remember them later.

#11: Keep Up With News

These news apps ensure you never miss another breaking story.

feedly app

Keep up with blogs and news sites on the fly.

News Reader Apps

iOS: Feedly ReaderTidBITS News

Android: FeedlygReader

#12: Listen to Your Favorite Podcasts

It's easy for social media marketers to feel like we're working in silos, but with podcasts, we can be part of a vibrant community.

Podcasts are a convenient way to stay in the know, whether you're driving, sitting at your desk or taking a break in a neighborhood cafe.

Smartphones come with their own podcast apps, but here are few more you can check out.

podcast player app

Listen to your favorite podcasts anywhere.

#13: Monitor Brand Mentions

Timely responses to brand mentions make or break a brand's reputation. Don't miss a customer service issue just because you're not at your desk.

Julie Neidlinger gives five reasons why brands need to monitor mentions:

  • Find out where you're doing a good job
  • Discover where you need to improve
  • Understand who your audience is
  • Listen to what your customers need or want
  • Figure out where you need immediate customer service

Avoid social media debacles waiting to happen by using apps that help you monitor mentions of your company and personnel. Say thank you or apologize when it matters most—in the moment.

#14: Notify With Your Own Broadcast Channels

Nowadays everyone can broadcast news by curating topics of interest to your audience and then pushing them out as a channel update. For example, you can create your own broadcast channel; select a name for it (e.g., Social Media In-the-Know); add a headline, photo and text; and wham, you can create your own broadcast news.

Some apps make it possible to promote your channel—for example, you can tweet "Get broadcasts on your phone from 'Social Media In-the-Know'"—and include a shortened URL link, https://app.net/c/2b3p.

appnet app

Broadcast news that matters to your followers.

iOS: App.netNetbot for App.net

Android: App.netTweet Lanes

#15: Organize Your Social Media To-Do List

To-Do: Come up with an idea for a new blog post, reach out to new followers on Twitter, check brand mentions, find new images. Sound familiar? If your social media to-do list feels like it's growing exponentially, a reliable organizing app may be exactly what you need.

Lists are a great way to manage projects and workloads, but you don't always have them with you when you're away from your desk.

What you need is an app that will keep your list at your fingertips and help you tame the beast. These apps should do the trick. And checking off each item as you complete it feels so good!

workflowy app

Manage social media projects and workloads with organizing apps.

List Apps

iOS: WorkFlowyWunderlist

#16: Pay or Request Money

If you need to pay invoices or request and receive payment for products and services, apps can make that easier for both parties.

Depending on the app, you can send payment, take checks, track cash sales, send invoices and plug in mobile card readers to swipe cards. Receipts can be emailed or texted to your customers.

paypal app

Bill and accept service payments on the go.

Payment Apps

iOS: PayPalInvoice2go PlusSquare Register

Android: PayPalGetPaid:FreelancerSquare Register

#17: Qualify and Track Leads

These days it's smartphone or bust—nobody remembers the Rolodex.

Mobile apps are making it so much easier to gather lead information. For example, if you're an exhibitor at a conference, don't gather cards in a fishbowl to sift through later. Instead, use an app to quickly enter attendee badge numbers or scan badge QR codes.

If you're not a vendor, you can still use these apps to capture the same information from people you're networking with. When you get back to the office, it's much easier to keep track of your leads.

ileads app

Store leads right in your phone to make the most of your networking experiences.

#18: Report on Group Projects

Project success relies on buy-in from stakeholders, consistent communication and updates. It's critical that everyone is on the same page and accountable for their roles.

Group project apps can help keep communication open, address problems (with solutions) as they arise, keep workflow on schedule and manage deadlines.

trello app

Make sure your project team is on the same page with mobile organization apps.

#19: Stay Connected on Free Wi-Fi

Needless to say, conducting business on the go digs into your cellular data plan. Finding places where you can access free Wi-Fi is a necessity, not a "nice to have."

You may know the free Wi-Fi options in your city, but when you travel it may be tricky.

Instead of wandering around hoping for a connection, save time by using an app that helps you find free Wi-Fi close to you.

As you use public Wi-Fi, remember to protect your private information.

#20: Take Links on the Go

Remember that link you shortened and shared on one of your social networking profiles yesterday, last week or even a few months ago?

Links can have a life of their own and with a link app, you can check in and see the status of a link. You can even give it a little boost by sharing again on Twitter, email or via a text message right from the app.

Taking your links with you on the go will help you remember to revisit and continue to share valuable content.

bitly app

Keep track of shortened links.

#21: Use Your Pinterest Feed to Discover and Pin Content

Finding relevant images to pin and repin to your Pinterest page can be fun and is easily achieved with a good smartphone app.

Apps provide various options like uploading from your camera, editing photos with effects and custom drawing. Pinterest apps make your Pinterest page more dynamic and in the moment.

pinhog app

Pinning apps help social media marketers create engaging pinboards.

#22: View Vine Clips

Some days, even after your morning coffee, you need to jumpstart your creative momentum. Looking at what others have created can provide grist for the mill.

Since Vine clips are short, you won't feel guilty about spending a few minutes finding new ideas for your own short, shareable video clips or other content.

#23: Wow Followers With TV Content

The programs you watch on TV can say a lot about you. "Show, don't tell," is another way to look at these TV apps that allow you to post what you're watching. Some apps also make it possible to clip a significant moment and share it with your followers.

Add TV to your content marketing strategy.

tunerfish app

#24: e(X)ecute Blog Posts

Mobile blogging apps may be the most useful of all.

If you're traveling and you forgot to schedule or publish a post, you'll be right on time with a blogging app.

If you're catching up on your news (#11) and see an update your readers will appreciate, you can blog it right there. No laptop needed.

Remember all of those great ideas you recorded in numbers 6, 10, 11 and 14? You can blog those right now on your phone.

wordpress app

Keep your blog posts on schedule.

#25: Yelp Comments and Reviews

Online reviews are highly influential on consumer purchase decisions.

Most businesses watch Facebook and Twitter for customer service opportunities, but there are other places your customers are talking about you. (This is a great time to consider #13, brand monitoring.)

Yelp may be one of the most forgotten customer service opportunities. Yelp tends to have very honest feedback about services, especially negative experiences.

When you see a less-than-happy customer on Yelp, imagine how you could turn that around just by letting the poster know he or she has been heard by responding to their feedback.

Monitor what people are saying about your business with the Yelp app.

yelp app

Ask reviewers how your business can be better next time.

Review Apps

iOSYelpDyce (note related food & drink app, not Yelp)

AndroidYelpYelp Share FacebookMessenger

#26: Zoom Into Videos

Customers love visual content, so it makes sense to engage with them using video in addition to your existing image content (see #3 and #9).

Smartphone video apps offer flexibility and convenience to capture video no matter where you are—in the office or out in the field.

viddy app

Create and share short videos wherever, whenever.

Video Apps

iOSViddyInstaVideoFrame

AndroidViddyVideo Maker Pro Free

Over to You

There's no lack of smartphone apps—there's one for everything you need. You've undoubtedly found and used different apps than those I listed here.

What do you think? Which of these apps will make your life easier? Tell us what apps you use in the comments below. I know our readers would love to know, and so would we!

Twitter Reportedly Refocusing Music Strategy Around Content

Twitter Reportedly Refocusing Music Strategy Around Content image Twitter music 2

Twitter recently announce that it's shutting down its #Music service but will reportedly refocus it around conversations and content.

The company announced a week ago that on April 18th the Twitter #Music app will officially shut down, following its removal from the app store.

Twitter #Music made a statement on the social network saying it would continue to experiment with new ways to bring users great content based on the music activity they see every day on Twitter.

So what's next? Well according to The Wall Street Journal Twitter is preparing to roll out a new music strategy that could come as early as this week.

The company reportedly has not actually pursued any licensing to create a streaming music service, but sources suggest that the company is in talks for a partnerships with SoundCloud, Beats Music, Sony Music Entertainment, and Vevo.

Twitter #Music was really isolated from the context of Twitter conversations, so to make conversations a bigger part of its new music strategy could really shake things up. Twitter has made no officially announcements of its new music strategy yet.

Update: Twitter Recovered Majority Of Celebrity Tweets That Got Deleted image Twitter Bug Deletes Tweets1

For the third time in March, Twitter experienced technical difficulties early this week. Previously the difficulties came from traffic overload and maintenance, but this time it was from celebrity tweets that went missing.

It's no secret that celebrity presences was and continues to be a big part of what makes Twitter what it is today. For around 12 hours multiple highly viewed tweets from famous people such as Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Ellen Degeneres vanished out of thin air.

However, it was the most retweeted tweet of all time that noticeably disappeared, Ellen's famed Oscar selfie. Regular users may have also been affected but there have been no significant reports that indicate that's the case.

We reported earlier that Twitter was currently investigating the bug that was making famous peoples tweets disappear. Since then, Ellen's Oscar selfie has been restored among others.

Although, some are still missing including Lady Gaga's tweet of a photo with Miley Cyrus.

Twitter has went down a few times this year and has been running into one difficulty after the other, while other social networks such as Facebook are moving full steam ahead.

In addition, several employees have left Twitter in the past few months. This may not be good for Twitters share price since the company just went public not long ago.

5 Steps to Creating an Internal Blogging Program

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 09:38 PM PDT

Dayna Rothman

In today's digitally-focused, buyer-driven world, you need a company blog. Your blog is a great resource for both generating leads and increasing thought leadership and awareness. But how do you get all of the content you need to post blogs on a consistent basis? This question comes up time and time again when I speak to other marketers about optimizing and growing their blogs.

5 Steps to Creating an Internal Blogging Program image Checklist1

At Marketo, our blog is a critical element of our content marketing strategy and we post at least one blog per day during the week. When I first began managing the blog, coming up with five blog posts a week was hard. I simply didn't have the content. So as a result, I spent countless nights feverishly writing blog posts to make sure I hit our target post number.

There had to be a better way to reach the number of posts we needed! The answer was to develop an internal blogging program to evangelize and incentivize blog contribution across the organization. To build a company of content creators was a true sea change, a real cultural shift, as employees hadn't historically contributed. At Marketo, our program has been highly successful. We have over 30 regular blog contributors now, our traffic has steadily increased and our social shares are up 86 percent since program launch.

Related Class: How to Leverage Business Blogging for Traffic Leads and Sales

So, how can you create an internal blogging program for your own organization? Read on to learn best practices that can help you succeed:

  • Understand and address internal barriers to success. You need to ask yourself, why aren't people contributing to your blog currently? Is it that people don't have time? Maybe your teams are afraid of writing? Or is it overall lack of interest in contributing? Understanding what hinders participation in the first place can help you make your program more relevant.
  • Incentivize blog contribution. Get your teams excited by gamifying your blog program. Align incentives to blogging milestones. As an example, when someone writes and publishes three blog posts she gets X, and then when she gets to seven blog posts she gets Y. If you have the budget to do so, put some enticing prizes behind your program like Fitbits, iPads and more. If you don't have a budget, no worries – what about company swag like t-shirts, branded beach towels and so on.
  • Develop formalized guidelines. Don't leave anything up to chance. Develop formalized guidelines and publish them. You want to cover blog post length requirements, post topic suggestions, SEO guidelines, formatting guidelines, social media guidelines and the submission process. Answer all of the potential questions a contributor may have.
  • Provide training and expert resources. One of the big barriers to blogging is that not everyone is comfortable with writing. Offer a handful of formalized training sessions to cover your program and basic best practices on blogging. Another option is offering one-on-one blogging consultations for interested participants – you can help with writing and ideation.
  • Meet with internal stakeholders. You need to get all of your executives on board in order for the program to work. If you can get their buy-in, you can get the buy-in of their teams. The hotly anticipated "Beasts of the East" matchup between the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers lived up to the hype. At one point three of Twitter's top five hashtags referenced the game in some way.

Users of the social media monster loved it, and they all seemed to agree on one thing:

The bar fight of a basketball game was a possible preview of this season Eastern Conference Finals. As the game started, only #BeastsOfTheEast was trending. As the second half started, HeatVsPacers was Twitter's top trend. Then, as the fourth quarter started, #MIAvsIND joined the party.

"Beasts of the East" will be what fans remember the name of the game as. Both sides let their beasts loose as LeBron James and Paul George battled for offensive dominance. According to Twitter, George won:

With just over one minute left, the game was separated by one point. Just as Twitter predicted, it was destined to go down to the wire.

When the "Beasts of the East" game finally ended in the Pacers favor 84-83, there was no telling who the better team was. Last season it was Miami. At points this season it's looked like the Pacers. As we get into the playoffs we'll found out for sure.

Turkey’s Ban On Twitter Overthrown By Court Officials

Turkey's Ban On Twitter Overthrown By Court Officials image twitter bird in cage

The ban on Twitter that was initiated six days ago by the Turkish government could be coming to an end soon. According to the Hurriyet Daily News, on Wednesday a Turkish court has issued a "stay of execution" on the government's order. This means that the ban will be withheld until judges have the right opportunity to weigh up the many complaints that have formed around the issue.

This decision can be seen by many as a plus for the many opposing civil rights activists. After the court had made its ruling, Twitter also came forth and confirmed to reporters that they were also one of the parties that filed in a complaint. Twitter then posted on their official blog, commenting on what they have done so far to fight back.

They first reported that the government of Turkey had originally proposed the ban on their site for three reasons. Two of the reasons were related to content that had violated Twitter's rules, both of which have already been suspended and deleted. They had also ordered Twitter to take down an account, while accusing a former minister of corruption. Twitter showed retaliation on that request and commented:

"This order causes us concern. Political speech is among the most important speech, especially when it concerns possible government corruption. That's why today we have also petitioned the Turkish court on behalf of our users to reverse this order."

They have also taken the initiative to activate their Country Withheld Content tool. This was done in order to provide safety to a specific individual. The tool's purpose is to allow content to be withheld from a specific jurisdiction while possibly remaining visible to everybody else.

Two of the reasons were identified with content that had abused Twitter's principles, the two of which have just been suspended and erased. They had additionally requested Twitter to consider, while blaming a previous clergyman for debasement.
