Over Active User Filling Up Your Feed? Twitter Has A Button For That

Posted: 12 May 2014 09:57 PM PDT

Ian DeMartino

The long-rumored and highly anticipated Twitter mute button has begun rolling out for end users, and it allows them to eliminate a user from their Twitter feed without blocking the user entirely.

Muting a user makes it so that user's actions won't appear in your twitter feed, but significantly, the user won't be notified of the mute. It also won't prevent the muted user from favoriting, retweeting or replying to your tweets, but those actions won't show up in your twitter feed. For those that enjoy using push and/or SMS notifications on their mobile devices, the muted user will no longer cause those notifications to go off.

In addition to helping you deal with annoying users in a less severe way, the function could also be used to consolidate and limit twitter feeds for users who follow a lot of people. Following back is considered a polite move in some Twitter circles, and as wrong as that perception may be, it has caused some users to have an unmanageable number of accounts that they follow. Allowing accounts to mute users lets accounts that follow a lot of users trim back their twitter feeds and focus on the people they actually want to follow, without offending people by unfollowing or blocking them.

It is a feature many Twitter clients have used for a while, but it is a welcome to see it become available on the default Twitter client. If you have someone you want to mute, simply click the "more" link on any of the user's tweets and select "Mute @username."

As is typical in big updates like this, Twitter plans to roll out the feature over the coming weeks, so if you don't see the mute feature, give it some time.

Iranian Women Protest Mandatory Hijab Law On Facebook

Posted: 12 May 2014 09:56 PM PDT

Ian DeMartino

Thousands of Iranian women are unveiling themselves in more ways than one. A Facebook page dedicated to giving them a space to express themselves has been put up by an Iranian journalist based in London and thousands of Iranian women are using the platform to showcase something rarely seen in public in the theocratic nation, their entire head.

The page "Stealthy Freedom" was put up less than two weeks ago, and already thousands of women have posted pictures of themselves, minus the Iranian mandated Hijab, on the page. In its still short time in existence, the page has received over 136 thousand likes.

In Iran, religious law-enforcement roams the streets, making sure Iranian citizens follow the country's strict theocratic laws, including that women must wear a Hijab, which is a type of Islamic clothing, anytime they are in public. A Hijab covers a woman's head and depending on the type of Hijab, her face as well.

Iranian's new President, Hassan Rouhani, is more sympathetic to the cause of not wearing a Hijab than previous Iranian presidents, but he doesn't hold the power to strike down the regulation, as that power rests with the religious authorities in the country.

While the journalist told the Guardian that she didn't necessarily want to cause people to stand up against the forced Hijab, she simply wanted to give non-Hijab wearing Iranian women a voice.

Now they have one.

Driving Holiday Sales on Social: How To Start Planning Now

Posted: 12 May 2014 08:51 PM PDT

Driving Holiday Sales on Social: How To Start Planning Now image Binkd Frictionless Payments SM 294x300Social media is a great place for brands to connect with current and potential consumers leading up to the holidays. It's also a channel to promote the latest products, provide exclusive offers and have direct dialogue with users who engage with your branded content. According to recent data, people are already getting ready to shop for Back To School almost 4 months early this year.

It's not surprising that the holiday season is the most important time for retail sales and even less surprising that consumers are doing their shopping online. Last year, mobile sales and traffic accounted for nearly 40% of online traffic on Black Friday and nearly a third of all online traffic on Cyber Monday. The trends continue to support that the biggest push for major brands who want to succeed during the holiday season need a strong strategy around mobile, social and integration.

Perfecting these strategy takes time, testing and analysis. Here are ways to implement strategies now so you are ready when it's holiday crunch time:

Test, Test, Test

What channels are your most engaging customers in and what are they interested in? Brands need to figure this out down to a science. With all of the holiday cluster, consumers are only going to convert and engage with something that they want, in the channel that they are most active in.

Do your Twitter followers want deals or content? Are your Instagram followers looking for a sneak peek on the newest product or just like the dogs in the office? By testing out channels over a period of time, brands can learn which channel their consumers respond best in and where they are most likely to purchase.

Learn About Your Email House File

Another valuable data set that is important to succeeding in mobile is knowing how social your email list is. When it comes to the holidays, consumers will be getting hundreds of emails and it's most likely only the subject line that will get them to open.

Discovering if your truly engaged email consumers are willing to share your email content (deals!) within social media to get something in return is highly valuable. By putting a tweet intent in your email ("Tweet #Want #PromoCode to get 20% off your next purchase) not only allows you to learn who your most likely to purchase consumers are— but takes your private offering and amplifies it in social media for their friends and followers to see.

Now What?

After gathering learnings, brands now can create a new data set of qualified consumers who participate in a social promotions, knowing they are highly engaged with your brand. If a consumer is willing to take steps to get access to your brands promotions, they are the consumers you will want to reward (VIP) with access to promotions instantly. This creates a more seamless way to give your consumers what they are asking for when they are ready to spend money this upcoming holiday season.

After taking some time to learn which channels your consumers are active in and what content or deals they are looking for, you can strategize your social media holiday plan. You may realize that your audience in Twitter are most responsive to promotions and your Facebook audience really wants to see exclusive content. By segmenting accordingly, you can set yourself up for maximum results.

Kristen Merlin, Josh Kaufman, & Jake Worthington, Oh My!

At this point in the competition, it’s a total toss-up. Any of the 5 current singers on “The Voice” could make it to the finals. Just in case you are chomping at the bit to have a prediction of a fan of the show who’s opinion means absolutely nothing, you’ve come to the right place! I won’t even venture a guess as to the order these folks will fall, but based on the performances tonight and the audience reactions to their performances, my completely uneducated and totally unscientific guess is that the final three will be: Kristen Merlin, Josh Kaufman and Jake Worthington.

All of the artists are absolutely amazing. I know I’ve said it before, but I don’t remember a season of “The Voice” that has had so much talent as this season. Tonight each artist got to perform two songs. One of those songs was picked by the vocalist and the other by their coach. WOW. Amazing things happened. My absolute favorite performance of the night was hands down Kristen Merlin’s coach’s pick, “Foolish Games,” by Jewel. It was incredibly touching and I don’t think I have seen an artist so connected with any song so far this season.

Each of these three brings something unique that I think America needs:

1. Kristen Merlin – She’s a minority. She’s a woman in an openly same sex relationship. Country music–music in general– needs her. She’s real, she’s sweet, she’s authentic. She is who she is and she isn’t afraid to let America see the real Kristen Merlin. She’s a great role model to folks everywhere. Stand up and be who you are. Who you are is perfect.

2. Josh Kaufman – He’s a family man. Yes, Virginia, there is such thing as a family man. They do still exist! What I love about Josh Kaufman is that he is soft spoken but carries a huge punch when he sings. We’ve consistently heard one message from him this whole season: He loves, cherishs and adores his family. He is totally dedicated to them. We need that.

3. Jake Worthington – He’s our “All American” good old boy. This guy is as genuine and real as they come. He bares everything. He puts everything out there and doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him. He is the boy next door, the guy everyone wants to hang out and be friends with. As long as he stays true to himself and true to his sound, he’ll be a star. He embodies country music.

So, like I said.. I’m a nobody who’s opinion doesn’t matter, but there are a lot smarter and musically inclined people than me out there that have taken to social media to make their opinions heard. What are they saying?

I’m excited to see who goes to the finals. No matter who goes one thing is for certain, we are in for an amazing show next week!!

Eminem Releases Apologetic “Headlights” Video On Mother’s Day (Video)

Posted: 12 May 2014 04:41 PM PDT

Amanda Peterlin

Ask any musically- fluent human being about Eminem's relationship with his mother and a majority, if not all, would answer correctly. Eminem spent most of his career rapping about his troubled upbringing due to his neglectful and alcoholic mother, Debbie Mathers. This Mother's Day, perhaps we finally saw the Real Slim Shady.

Eminem, aka Marshall Mathers, used his song "Headlights" to apologize for verbally portraying his mother in such a negative light over the course of his career. Trashing his mom in songs about his childhood and their conflicts, Eminem wasn't subtle about his hatred to the woman responsible for giving him life. This Mother's Day, May 11, he released the music video for "Headlights" illustrating his apology for his hateful music.

"Never thinking about who what I said hurt, in what verse. My mom probably got it the worst. The brunt of it, but as stubborn as we are. Did I take it too far? 'Cleaning Out My Closet' and all them other songs. But regardless I don't hate you 'cause, Ma, You're still beautiful to me, 'cause you're my mom."

Directed by Spike Lee and featuring Fun.'s lead vocalist, Nate Ruess, "Headlights" has already received 3 million plus views in just over a day. Very clever and sentimental idea to release the visuals on a day that honors moms around the world. Over 150,000 thumbs up and 1,500 thumbs down, this video has gained a lot of attention due to Eminem's 180 and the holiday.

Shot mostly from his mother's point of view, this video is very powerful and gut-wrenching at certain moments. Watch above.

Erika M. Anderson’s Album Is About A Social Media Dystopia

Posted: 12 May 2014 03:56 PM PDT

Ian DeMartino

Erika M. Anderson's Album Is About A Social Media Dystopia image EMA The Futures Void

Erika M. Anderson, better known as EMA, has just released her new album, something she cautiously describes as a "West Coast noise and sci-fi record." It deals a lot with social media. The Future's Void isn't vapid like #Selfie, it's the antithesis to that (even if you argue #Selfie is vapid on purpose and therefore self-aware, being self-aware doesn't preclude you from also being vapid). It also isn't so much of a criticism of social media as a commentary on it, with its opening track Satellites showing the darkest hole Facebook and Oculus could bring us down.

In a phone interview with Grantland, EMA said that she wasn't really criticizing social media or the internet and general, just taking a deeper look at it.

"There are some songs that talk about some personal experiences I found frustrating, but I also think that the diversity of styles on the record is pro-Internet and pro-technology. "

Regardless of the intention of the album as a whole, Satellites does paint a bleak picture. On its own, as a song, it is a criticism, or at least a warning, of the possible result of our hyper consumed culture, she is also clearly concerned about the future of advertising and social media. Other tracks also focus on social media (although, not all of them) 3Jane is about a woman who wakes up one day to find her life ruined by the internet.

"They take your popular photo, or one like it, and apply it to their campaign. And now every time that you see your photo or you are just walking on the beach and having that moment, your brain has been colonized by that ad campaign."

I'm not going to try to analyze the track anymore than that, I am not a music critic, but it is worth pointing out that she does don an Oculus Rift, in the music video and on the cover. That makes Satellites and The Future's Void seem to unintentionally predict the Facebook, Oculus deal, although EMA admits in the interview that the timing was just coincidental.

Anyway, check out the video below. Even if just for the weirdness factor. EMA's The Future's Void released yesterday (April 8th) you can find it, along with other videos, on the album's site.

Solange Knowles Attacks Jay Z and Twitter Goes Crazy [Video]

Posted: 12 May 2014 12:52 PM PDT

Dan Evon

Want to know what people are talking about on Twitter today? Sure, some people are sending late Mother's Day messages and others are talking about Macaulay Culkin's t-shirt, but the biggest news on the social networking site is all about Solange Knowles and Jay Z.

Solange, who is Beyonce's little sister, was caught on video attacking Jay Z in an elevator after the Met Gala. It's unclear what started the fight but that hasn't stopped Twitter from speculating. Shortly after the video went viral the hashtag #WhatJayZSaidToSolange started trending.

What Did Jay Z Say To Solange Knowles?

According to the NY Daily News, Jay Z and Solange Knowles got into an elevator together at the Met Gala on May 5. Solange waited until the doors closed and then attacked her sister's husband. The incident may have happened behind closed doors but a surveillance camera captured everything.

It's unclear what started the fight. There's no audio on the tape but you can see Jay Z and Solange arguing shortly before the singer starts throwing out kicks and punches. TMZ notes that the three celebrities left the party together but Jay Z took a different car.

Neither Solange, Jay Z, or Beyonce have commented on the incident yet.

Here's the video of the Jay Z Solange Knowles fight.

Solange hasn't commented on the incident yet but she did recently say that she was having the time of her life. Maybe the fight really wasn't that big of a deal.

How to Streamline Your Blog Post Publishing and Promotion Tasks

Posted: 12 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Linda Dessau

One of the best things I've done to streamline the publishing and promotion process is to insert a template at the bottom of my blog post drafts in Word. I do this for my own posts at Content Mastery Guide, the guest posts I write for other sites, and the posts I write and manage for clients.

Template for blog promotion text

For my own posts, the template looks like this:

How to Streamline Your Blog Post Publishing and Promotion Tasks image blog publish promo checklist

I also include some reminders about formatting issues with my WordPress template (e.g., I need to save a second version of my photo in a different size as the "Featured Image" so it displays correctly in my weekly blogging tips newsletter).

With this template in place, the rest of my publishing and promotion tasks go much more smoothly. Plus, with these details at the bottom of every blog post draft, I can easily outsource the blog publishing and promotion tasks to my team for my monthly blog writing clients.

Checklist for blog post publishing and promotion

© Dmitry – Fotolia.com

I wrote the following set of instructions for a blogging consultation client based on what I was doing at the time. This was before I started using Buffer, but I still approach the process in much the same way.

In MS Word:

  • Create a blog post outline document as I'm planning the post
  • Re-save the outline as a new document as I draft the post so I preserve my original list of links and resources
  • Proofread and finalize the blog post text
  • Complete promotional text as per template

At Fotolia:

At Pic Monkey:

  • Re-size photo as needed and set file name (include a keyword where possible)
  • Create second version of picture with text (e.g., a quote or headline from the post, my website URL, photo copyright information)

In blog/website administrative dashboard (WordPress):

  • Create new post
  • Paste in title and text (use "Paste From Word" option)
  • Upload photo and set alternative text (include a keyword where possible)
  • Paste in blog post excerpt from Word doc template
  • Fill in SEO fields
  • Set category or categories – choose from existing category choices
  • Publish or schedule post

On Facebook (immediately):

  • Click "add photo" and upload the blog post photo
  • Paste the Facebook message from the Word doc template
  • At the end of the message, paste the permanent link (permalink) of the blog post
  • After the link, add one or two relevant hashtags, e.g., #blogging #smallbiz #marketing
  • If this is a guest post, or reference to another expert, link to that person's Facebook page by typing @ and the name, then clicking the page from the options that drop down
  • Publish update

On Twitter.com (immediately):

  • Click "add photo" and upload the blog post photo
  • Paste the text of the best tweet from Word doc template
  • At the end of the message, paste the permanent link (permalink) of the blog post
  • After the link, add one or two relevant hashtags, e.g., #blogging #smallbiz #marketing
  • If this is a guest post, or reference to another expert, add the person's Twitter name
  • Publish tweet

On LinkedIn (immediately):

  • Paste the LinkedIn message from the Word doc template
  • At the end of the message, paste the permanent link (permalink) of the blog post
  • If this is a guest post, or reference to another expert, link to that person's LinkedIn profile and/or company page by typing the name, then clicking the page or name from the options that drop down)
  • Share posts the same way in LinkedIn groups by starting a new discussion, if appropriate to the culture of that particular group
  • Share posts the same way to your company page (but you cannot link to another profile or page from a company page update)

In HootSuite or Buffer:

  • Schedule additional tweets for later in the week

In email broadcast system (if not using an automated RSS-to-email service):

  • Open HTML template or create copy of previous broadcast
  • Paste in text of blog post excerpt along with the permalink so people can read the entire post
  • Add blog post photo
  • (Optional) Add additional newsletter content, e.g., personal note, upcoming events, featured products/services
  • Send or schedule broadcast

Philips Reveals #BladeyConfessions To Promote The Aqua Touch

Posted: 12 May 2014 10:54 AM PDT

Vinaya Naidu

Male grooming brand Philips has launched an amusing campaign to introduce its new shaver designed for the modern man – the Philips AquaTouch. The brand has got the common razor to confess to his crimes in a confession video, to reveal his true identity of being a hurting villain guilty of causing nicks and cuts while shaving. As the blade reveals all his sinister crimes in the minute-long animated video, the viewer is led to the campaign website called '#BladeyConfessions'.

'I have a lot of apologies to make…I've hurt people..some of them real bad…its time to confess to every horrible thing I've ever done" before proceeding to describe how he ruined wedding days, interviews, dates and birthdays for a lot of men who'd used him. He says its just about 'Who I am' with a lot of regret and concludes with an apology.

The dedicated website is complete with Bladey confessions video and how the Aqua Touch is the solution for a smooth shave. Additionally, there are two more videos, one in which a married man confesses how a shave with the blade had ruined his honeymoon, and another in which a little girl confesses how she hates her dad shaving with the blade and the regular cuts and nicks.

Apart from this, one can add their own confessions to share how they were adversely affected by a razor blade shave by tweeting with the hashtag #BladeyConfessions or recording through the webcam. Similarly, viewers have been invited to forgive the razor blade by tweeting with the hashtag #iforgiveTheBlade or recording the forgiveness through the webcam. The site features user confessions which are tweets pulled from the Twitter stream having the hashtag #BladeyConfessions.

Finally, and most importantly, the site provides information about the Aqua Touch complete with an online buy link.

Philips took the social media route to initiate the confessions. Before revealing the confession of the shaving blade, the campaign created the right amount of suspense with teaser videos on its Facebook and Twitter pages. The video was finally revealed at the site after a good number of days.

Riding the confessions trend

Confessions had become the rage on social media, particularly Facebook where anonymous communities came together to confess to their guilt and take a little bit off from their regrets in life. Confession pages sprung up very frequently and also formed great fodder for sharing on social platforms. The Philips #BladeyConfessions campaign seems to have taken a leaf from this confession wave, although in a humorous way.

The confessions video did pave a path for the introduction of Aqua Touch. Creating the right amount of intrigue around the upcoming confession of a bad guy, before revealing the razor blade's confession video set the pace for the campaign. Driving the community to the website through the social platforms set the visibility for the campaign. However, the campaign would need to offer incentives for users to share their razor blade misadventures to bring about any kind of user engagement.

Do check out the video and share your views on the campaign.

Rainn Wilson Posts 'Backstrom' Sneak Peek On Instagram image the office

Rainn Wilson is heading back to television. The star of The Office will be starring in the upcoming Fox show Backstrom and today he unveiled a sneak peek of his character on Instagram.

Wilson writes: "Meet Backstrom! A sneak peek at my new character on Fox. (More to follow!) @BackstromOnFox."

Entertainment Weekly reports that Rainn Wilson will play Everett Backstrom in the new "comic crime procedural" from Bones creator Hart Hanson.

The show has been in development since 2012 but it's taken a little while to find a home. It was originally a pilot on CBS but was picked up by Fox after the network passed on it.

Fox president Kevin Reilly in a statement: "Hart Hanson and Rainn Wilson are the perfect combination of creative vision and on-screen talent to bring this one-of-a-kind character and story like Backstrom to Fox. I've been in business with Hart for a long time, and not only does he have a rare gift for infusing darker themes with relatable humor, he's one of the best showrunners out there today. Together with Rainn – who absolutely nails this role and makes it a classic Fox character – I think we've got something really special here."

Here's a look at a few scenes from the pilot of Backstrom.

Do you think Backstrom will be a hit? If you want to see more of the show you should probably follow Rainn Wilson on Twitter. The actor promised that he would be sharing a few cool photos from the show today on the social network.
