"Content, Content, and More Content…"

The above statement was taken from the job description of my current position. In a nutshell, we content marketers need to be content machines. As I have written about previously, coming up with new and fresh ideas for posts can become taxing on your creativity.

Here are 5 ways to find inspiration for your next blog post:

Recent Industry News

Every once in a while a huge story breaks out in your industry. Whether a company makes a huge exit, a product gets shut down, or a well known executive gets fired, these types of stories will be spoken about for days.

This is your time to pounce.

"Newsjacking," though a somewhat nefarious-sounding word, refers to linking your own product or service to recent news items in order to gain more visibility. Obviously, this must be done with tact and professionalism.

A few ways to identify popular news stories include monitoring social channels (look at what's trending on Twitter), as well as frequently reading industry blogs. If you choose the latter, you run the risk of beating a dead horse, so make sure that your post is unique in its insights and how you relate it to your own company, product, or service.

The Needs of Your Target Market

If you're like me, you are hyper-aware of the conversations going on within your target market. As marketers, we have to be. To keep your finger on the pulse of potential customers, you need to be where they are – namely, social media, blogs, and message boards.

By staying in the middle of the action, you'll be able to know what's keeping your target market up at night, what your audience is lacking, and what questions they need answered – and then respond in the most relevant way possible.

Current Events

Similar to newsjacking, this strategy needs to be carried out with tact. If, for example, a well-known person passes away, this is not an opportunity to piggy-back on the news for your own promotional benefit.

There are several go-to events that you can utilize. For example, the Super Bowl is an event that is talked about weeks (or even months) in advance. In our (marketing) world, the discussion often centers on the commercial aspects of the upcoming game, as well as the one from the previous year. Along with sporting events, you can also capitalize on presidential elections, changing of the seasons, and holidays.

Personal Experience

Your life might be more interesting than you think. We all have great stories to tell; the key is being able to make them relate to the overall topic of your blog. I often write (much as I did with this post) about the challenges I face as a B2B content marketer, and the successful solutions I have found.

You can also write about recent events you attended, marketing campaigns you have launched, or a new and clever marketing strategy you came up with.

Repurposed Content

The prospect of having to produce a massive amount of content, especially for a small company, can be daunting. However, there is a strategy that allows marketers to create a plethora of quality content, without having to spend countless hours writing.

The concept is simple.- After creating a large piece of content, divide it up into different content items and distribute it across multiple channels. For example, if you recently hosted a webinar that was recorded, you can then it and turn it into numerous blog posts, upload the recording to YouTube, and the audio to Soundcloud.

By repurposing content, you will be able to get the most bang for your buck out of the blood, sweat, and tears you put into your content.

Facebook Introducing New Video Metrics

Posted: 05 May 2014 08:34 AM PDT

Mike Stenger

Facebook rarely talks about its video product, and today announced new metrics that will give Page owners far more insight into how their videos are performing.

Rolling out "over the coming weeks," Pages will soon see video views, unique video views, average viewing duration and audience retention.

Facebook Introducing New Video Metrics image facebook video metrics

Video views are only counted if someone watches for at least three seconds, and Facebook says it counts auto-plays in the News Feed.

You will also be able to see how many people viewed to a specific interval, all the way from 25 percent to 100 percent of the video.

Audience retention includes a simple graph that maps the percentage of total views as time progresses:

Facebook Introducing New Video Metrics image facebook video audience retention

The newly upgraded video metrics will be available on both organic (free) and paid (sponsored) videos, and advertisers can discover even more insight related to demographics such as age or gender.

From the Facebook for Business blog:

"Using the 'data breakdowns' feature in Ads Reporting, you can also learn how specific audiences responded to your video. For example, if females between 18 and 34 are a demographic you target in your campaign, the data breakdown will show the number of views you received from that demographic."

Facebook is years behind in video analytics compared to YouTube, but it's better late than never as they say.

Ex PayPal Exec Back On Twitter and Delivering FUs To All

Posted: 05 May 2014 07:57 AM PDT

Disgraced former PayPal Executive Rakesh Agrawal, who was fired last week from abusing his fellow employees on Twitter is back at it again.

Clearly having hit the bottle again, Agrawal took to Twitter Sunday with some more delightful tweets, including clear attempts to make himself completely unemployable in Silicon Valley.

The night started with him complaining about visiting Bourbon Street:

And went down hill from there:

Have no fear though because all was good in the end :)

Ex PayPal Exec Back On Twitter and Delivering FUs To All image winning

Among other Tweets Sunday evening Agrawal also claimed to have met with a friend to fund a new startup, and also asked people to explain his Tweets so he could hire them.

Unless his Twitter account (like most of his drunk twitter tweets) is deleted, I suspect we'll be reporting on him again soon.

Amazon Now Lets You Tweet To Add Products To Your Cart

Posted: 05 May 2014 07:55 AM PDT

Mike Stenger

Amazon is making a new feature available to Twitter users that allows you to add products to your cart by replying to a tweet with a special hashtag.

Dubbed #AmazonCart, it's open to customers in the US and UK. Being one of the world's largest e-commerce sites, customers and companies frequently share links to product pages.

If you see something you like, you head on over to the site, and if you want it, click the "Add to cart" button. Not a big deal, but apparently Amazon feels that takes up too much time.

Now, whenever you see a tweet linking to a product on Amazon, you can simply reply with the hashtag #AmazonCart, and it will automatically be added to your cart.

You must first connect your Twitter account via the Your Social Settings page in order for it to work. Again, tweeting just adds it to your cart, and does not automatically purchase it for you.

After tweeting with the hashtag, you'll quickly receive a reply that looks something like this:

Killing the joke, Amazon didn't take my request for a 55-gallon drum of lubricant seriously, which is probably a good thing for my personalized recommendations and psyche.

Your Daily Social Media Marketing Checklist

Posted: 05 May 2014 07:52 AM PDT

Tabitha Jean Naylor

Your Daily Social Media Marketing Checklist image checklist 300x199Social media is a fairly new concept, and the idea of using it to market your business is even newer. Many people find that they are unsure of where to start, or how to keep things going one they have started. To help educate you, we have come up with a checklist of things you must be doing daily on your social media accounts.

Post At Least Once Per Account

Most websites have an account on at least one social media site, while others may have as many as four or five. More is not always better, however. If you can not keep all of your accounts active, then they are not going to do you any good. Staying active means posting to each account at least once per day. It can be anything from an advertisement, to a question, to a picture. Just make sure you post something.

Like All Comments Left On The Previous Day’s Posts

You need to like every single comment people have left on your previous day’s posts. It is possible for you to literally like between ten and thirty comments per second, so time is no excuse. Just like the comment! Not only does it take no time at all, but it also helps your followers feel like you care about what they have to say. This, in turn, leads them to want to interact with your content more often.

Respond To At Least Five Comments Per Day, Per Site

Take the time to personally respond to at least five comments per day, per site. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a long response, although you may feel free to craft a lengthy response if you desire. The point is that you are interacting with your audience, and this is what social media marketing is all about.

Connect With At Least One New Person

Connect with one new person. Follow back, comment on their post, or something. Just one person per day can help you build many valuable connections in the long run. Connections are vital to your company’s success in numerous ways.

Share At Least One Thing Someone Else Has Posted

Share someone else’s post, particularly one advertising their business, products, or services. This will prompt others to share your content in return. It’s a give and take situation, with the key being that you always give more than you take. Not only does this help your business, but it helps you to be remember much more fondly by your followers and competitors.

Respond To All Valuable Messages You Have Received

If you receive a message, take the time to answer it. No, you don’t have to answer messages which are spam, one word responses, etc.  But if the message is of value, meaning that someone has taken the time to craft a note about something important to them (or you), you need to answer it.

If you carry out these simple tasks on your social media accounts each day, you will soon begin to see  your effort bear fruit. It takes a minimal amount of time, and anyone can do it. If you find that it is too much for you to handle, you can always hire on additional help or do away with your least valuable social media account.

Sony Compact Cassette Stores Equivalent Of 3,700 Blu-Ray Discs

Sony Compact Cassette Stores Equivalent Of 3,700 Blu Ray Discs image Sony Compact Cassette

The Sony compact cassette continues to amaze us, even more than two decades after the first compact discs entered the commercial market. While digital downloads have long replaced the traditional storage type, Sony has proven that a compact cassette tape can still hold its own in an ever changing market.

The company is using extremely high density tapes to archive data for corporations and government agencies. The compact cassettes are being used because they are efficient, cheaper to produce than other storage types, and more reliable than other storage devices.

With 185TB of storage space per disk, Sony has managed an incredible 18.5GB per square inch.

The new Sony compact cassette offers five times the memory storage capacity over IBM's record setting feat in 2010.

Based on current numbers the disc offers 74 times more storage than typical discs on the market.

While Sony has not yet commercialized the technology, news of the record breaking feat has led the term "compact cassette" to the top of Facebook Trends.

Time to bring back the floppy disc? Of course not, but for archival purposes this is an amazing step forward for data storage.

5 Difficult Ways to Get Results from LinkedIn

Posted: 05 May 2014 06:33 AM PDT

Bernie Borges

LinkedIn recently celebrated the milestone of reaching 300 million registered users, and now celebrates its 11th birthday. As a public company, LinkedIn is exceeding analyst expectations and while its stock price performance has been somewhat of a roller coaster, overall it is performing well. As a user, these achievements are meaningless if you don't know how to use the professional networking site for brand building and lead generation. So, I offer a few tips that require work. They're only difficult if you're unwilling to put forth the effort.

Be a Published Author

The LinkedIn Influencer program was recently expanded. All LinkedIn members will soon have the ability to publish articles on the publishing platform. Write articles on topics that are relevant to your professional brand and to your intended audience. Each article you publish has potential to be seen by thousands of people, starting with your network. With a little luck, your articles will be shared across the LinkedIn network if it is featured by LinkedIn through the Pulse content channel.

5 Difficult Ways to Get Results from LinkedIn image Screen Shot 2014 05 02 at 9.50.34 AM

Post 3 Status Updates Per Day

We eat three meals per day. We brush our teeth three times per day. You guessed it…To be serious about your results on LinkedIn I recommend you post at least three status updates per day. Paaleeeez, don't mistake this for posting noise for the sake of posting updates. Post relevant, interesting content that is consistent with your professional brand. Of course, this requires that you establish multiple sources of relevant content. No more than about 25% of the content you post should be your content. The balance should be from other sources. LinkedIn makes this easy through Pulse, where you can configure dozens of content sources. By posting status updates, you remain visible and viable on topics that represent your professional interests and expertise.

Use InMail

I get too much unsolicited email. 99.9% of gets discarded. But, InMail is different. Yes, it requires a LinkedIn Premium account, but (again) if you're serious about using LinkedIn for business development it's a no brainer. LinkedIn guarantees delivery of your InMail to anyone on LinkedIn. If the person doesn't open your InMail within 7 days, LinkedIn returns the InMail credit to you. When sending your InMail, be direct, polite, professional and succinct. The reality is that InMail is the new cold call. Just like cold calling is (was) a numbers game, not everyone will accept your InMail. A well written InMail with a compelling message can open doors for you.

Save Searches

Use the advanced search feature to find people with whom you want to connect. Ultimately, you want to take some of your connection engagements offline to a live conversation. Using the advanced search function, you can create a filtered search and save the search so that you can revisit it over and over. It takes time to mine search data. Don't rush through it. As you find people who meet your search criteria, you should study their profile to learn about their professional interests and how they engage with others. The save search feature allows you to mine data without re-creating the search from scratch.

5 Difficult Ways to Get Results from LinkedIn image LinkedIn Saved Search

Use Contacts

There are many LinkedIn features not known to infrequent users. One such feature is the ability to save someone to your "contacts" and organize people using tags. When you visit someone's profile, you can create a custom tag to organize your contacts for future follow up. Of course, your approach should be focused on ways to connect and engage with people in a meaningful way. That takes times. Using the tag feature in contacts allows you to stay organized. You can also add notes about your conversation(s). You'll notice that LinkedIn also tracks your email correspondence provided you use the email address associated with your LinkedIn login.

5 Difficult Ways to Get Results from LinkedIn image Screen Shot 2014 05 04 at 9.52.47 AM

There is nothing difficult about using these techniques to get results from LinkedIn. The sad reality is that most people still use LinkedIn as a job site. Most people don't even sign into their LinkedIn account more than once per month. If you're not in your LinkedIn account everyday, these techniques won't work for you. Everything in business takes time and effort. The "it's a marathon, not a sprint" cliche is applicable here. Get serious about LinkedIn using these techniques and watch your results grow.

Believe it or not, it has been 10 years since the last episode of “Friends.” The final episode, aptly named “The Last One,” aired on May 6, 2004, and brought in over 52 million viewers.

In the show’s 10 year run, the six close-knit friends encountered, at times, the unbelievable. And even more often, the friends would always be there for each other. Life is hard sometimes and the show made its way into the hearts of millions for showing how special friends can truly be. The show had many guest stars over the years (including Brad Pitt, Jennifer Grey, Maggie Wheeler, Sean Penn, Paul Rudd, Denise Richards, and many others).

“Friends” gave life lessons in ways that you could watch an episode at the end of the day and just unwind and laugh. Some are more memorable than others but, at the end of the day, every episode (simple as it may be), had some kind of a take away. Reruns capturing these moments still run on television so “Friends” fans may relive their favorite moments.
