Social Media Career Advice For The Class of 2014

Posted: 03 May 2014 04:57 PM PDT

Gerry Moran

Are you a Millennial graduating with the Class of 2014? Or, are you a parent who is hoping for a return on college investment from your Class of 2014 Millennial?

I am the father of two Millennials, a hiring manager of a few more and a connector to many. To help this Class of 2014 I have liberally borrowed (or highjacked) from Max Ehrmann's famous Desiderata commencement poem to help this year's graduates (and many other Millennials) to successfully use social media to start and build their careers.

The following advice is a requirement, a need, a prerequisite, an essential and necessary set of things to do – starting today. In other words, a social media desiderata.

Social Media Desiderata For The Class of 2014

  • Go placidly amid the noise of social media, texting and intrusive content and let go of your college habits. Use social media as a tool for your career in a much different way than connecting with your university friends. Remember, there is peace and career success in the silence of listening – social listening. So, listen first before you start using social media to look for a job, or to network in your current one. This listen-before-you-leap suggestion will help you to interact more relevantly and smartly and will lead to good things.

  • As much as possible be on good terms with all persons in your social network since they can make or break your career. Cleary tweet, post and share your knowledge and point of view so others understand what you are saying in as little as 140 characters. Don't be arrogant. And, listen and share others' content to forge authentic relationships. You may need their assistance in the years to come.

  • If you compare yourself with others' social media followers or credentials, avoid becoming vain and bitter. Your social-media and personal-brand currency will increase in value as the years progress. Join forces with others and contribute to the social media community inside or outside of your organization. Don't be a lone wolf. There will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself in your career. Figure out how to collaborate with them using social media by following, learning and sharing their content. You will be amazed at the impact this engagement strategy will have.

  • Avoid loud and aggressive persons, but learn how to network with key individuals, companies and communities using social media. Follow others. Join LinkedIn Groups. Read key blogs. Network with those who are influential, can teach you and can connect you with others. This action will help take your career in the best and highest direction. Leave poor college-aged social-media habits behind. Learn how to expertly connect with the right person, on the right channel, with the right message at the right time to make the best impression. This new social media nuance will help connect you with those that can help you.

  • Keep interested in your own career however humble, however, learn how to build your reputation with social media channels and great content. Your reputation does not 'just happen.' It's hard work and many non-Millennials excel at this career behavior. Use LinkedIn to build value in your personal-brand currency so you can spend it to expand your reputation. Take a good picture, summarize what you can do for your new company and keep on connecting with everyone you meet. Always have a point of view and opinion. A bigger network is always better, trust me.

  • Be yourself, but build your brand to increase your career options. Remember, you can be yourself everywhere, but there will be consequences. If your potential employer, boss or customer can see you private life on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, then only you are to blame. If you cannot embrace an always-on professional and business persona, then turn on your privacy settings and use two sets of social media accounts – personal and business. You won't be sorry.

  • Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. The days of sexting and boasting about your partying using your social channels are in the past. So bury that behavior, or your career may be dead before you start it. Keep the spirit. Lose the self-incriminating pictures and language!

  • Own your career, no matter how many times it changes. You will need to learn how to talk the talk on every current and future social media network and platform (and non-social network for that matter) to improve your personal brand and earn the right to move forward.

  • Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. And post your smiling professional-photographed face on your LinkedIn, Twitter, SlideShare, Tumblr and your other social media profiles!

5 Amazing ways to be super Productive on Social Media

Posted: 03 May 2014 04:34 PM PDT

Harsh Ajmera

Who doesn't want to figure out how to get more done? Or get things done more efficiently? How often have we wished we had more hours in a day? This is something I personally was struggling before few months.

Social Media is an important part for people like me who live on it. And the fact is there isn't enough time to get everything done from – content curation, doing research, being socially active, promoting brands/products/articles and still there is so much left to do. I figured out a small secret for this, and started using it personally and for some brands I work with.

5 Amazing ways to be super Productive on Social Media image productive social media

It's very important to use your time productively and smartly when you are doing stuff online. Below I'm mentioning 5 things that I always recommend to all businesses/brands I work for and seen some great results.

1. Choose the apt platform

Many individuals/businesses feel that they have to be active on every social media platform. Businesses can be present on all the platforms, but they can be much more productive by focusing on the social media sites that are most likely to reach their target audience. To truly be effective, a business should choose those social networks which are best suited for the type of media they want to use and if their target audience is there as well.5 Amazing ways to be super Productive on Social Media image this is it

Thus it is mandatory to do a little research before you start putting in your efforts, to realise only they are not getting wasted. Focus on some platforms and let other platforms just follow slowly.

For instance, your brand carters to women who are into fashionable goods you are best suited to leverage image-oriented sites like Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook. As your business needs the visual appeal to entice your customers to engage with you.

2. Choose the right tools

Social media marketing isn't easy. It takes time and commitment to grow your social presence, create and share great content, and engage with your followers. Thus doing all this, can be extremely time consuming and tedious.

However, there are ton of social media tools which can help you ease your load and they can do wonders for you. You need to choose the right tools based on your requirement; once you have that sorted, you don't have to stick your eyes to screen all the time.

3. Leverage the power of Community

One of the things that I always recommend is to start creating community of your influencers, followers, and brand advocates. Create Twitter lists, Facebook groups, Google+ communitites or Linkedin groups or maybe forums. But you need to actively be around with people who really matter.

Start engaging your with your influencers on an individual basis. Leverage the power and size of their networks to further boost your online presence. Thus by leveraging the power of your community you can increase your brand's awareness, get noticed by a lot more eyeballs and a lot more benefits.

4. Cut off Distractions!

5 Amazing ways to be super Productive on Social Media image distractionHave you been so absorbed by funny cat videos that you didn't realise how yourhalf an hour flew away. And those related videos on YouTube are so smart you always get enticed to watch one after the other. It's my recommendation to put your phones away, don't look at your emails or WhatsApp for a few hours

I use focus booster on my Mac to keep a track on time, you can set number of minutes after which you want a alert to change your flow. This really helps in thinking and articulateing things without any distractions and keep the flow of your thoughts going in the right direction.

5. It's Good to be Offline at times

When you are constantly online, reading new updates, handling campaigns, talking to people, discussions with peers online and other online activites all time, you start missing the real aspects about day-to-day life. This affects in two ways- one, you start getting saturated and if a particular activity you could finish in 5 mins, may take 10 mins or even longer.

Second, you loose creativity. Creativity is somewhere the key differentiator between you and other businesses out there. It's good to be offline sometimes, so all the information you were exposed to starts deciphering and you can breathe in all the worlds. That's when a good idea strikes, which you can then implement in a much more productive way.

Social media can be extremely time consuming and sometimes it may even demoralize when you don't get the desired results. Thus there is need for proper management of time to make sure all your efforts are being utilised productively.

How do you manage all your functions on social media? Do share your ways to be more effective in the comments section below.

5 Must-Have Tools Every Social Media Enthusiast Should Use!

Posted: 03 May 2014 02:54 PM PDT

Harsh Ajmera

As a Social Media Enthusiast, I constantly look for ways to enhance my social media marketing skills. Don't you do so? Do you want tools to simplify your efforts? Time is the biggest investment when you work on social media, and I am always on a look-out for ways to make effective utilisation of time I spend for my clients and personal engagement.

5 Must Have Tools Every Social Media Enthusiast Should Use! image social media tools

I recently shared how you can increase your social media productivity by following certain measures. And I received two emails from our visitors asking what are the top social media tools that I recommend them to use on a daily basis. Thus I have compiled a list of 5 must have tools for social media enthusiasts which help you with your marketing efforts and managing your time as efficiently as possible.

1. Buffer

Buffer is an absolute must have tool. Buffer allows you to consistently share great content without manually sitting on posts; you just need to add content and buffer will take care of publishing it at the right time for you. Buffer rocks as in just one click it changes the way you communicate with your followers. It offers custom scheduling, analytics and insights.

When I asked Ruhani Rabin (Senior Vice President at Friendster) about Buffer, here is what he said-5 Must Have Tools Every Social Media Enthusiast Should Use! image ruhani rabin

Buffer is exactly what it means in the literal concept of social media. Not everyone can be active at the same time as their audience. This is where scheduled posts comes into play. Along with Buffer insights, it gives us a clear overview of which post is being popular. That is a great adaptive learning tactic too. Buffer is one tool you will need on your side if you have different audience in different geo locations.

2. RebelMouse

RebelMouse is your social frontpage, it takes all of your social media feeds from various networks and compiles them into one site. Features like Shout Outs and Rebel Alerts are my favorite, it helps you increase your engagement on Twitter.

You can also embed it anywhere on your website or blog. This is a great way to give your website additional visual appeal and fresh content with minimum effort and maintenance.

Here is what Bonin Bough (VP of Global Media and Consumer Engagement at Mondelez International) says about RebelMouse

3. IFTTT

IFTTT is actually a trigger system for your social media activites. Want to publish a photo on Flickr automatically if you upload somehting on Google+? Trying to tweet a 'Hi' to your every new follower on Twitter? IFTTT is the tool for you. As it allows you to connect any two web services together and automate actions through the social web by creating automatic recipes.

I had a chat with Hillel Fuld (CMO of Zula and startup mentor at Google Israel) about what he feels about IFTTT, here it is-

IFTTT is some serious out of the box thinking and it works by connecting different services across the social web. I've used it to tweet my Instagram pictures as native Twitter photos so they appear in stream as opposed to an Instagram URL.

4. Feedly

After Google Reader passed out, my ultimate friend for reading blogs and new articles is Feedly. Feedly allows you all you could do with Google Reader and I love how I can easily share and buffer interesting articles right from there. Don't miss out on any updates from your favorite blogs/sites and keep sharing them with your audience too.

5 Must Have Tools Every Social Media Enthusiast Should Use! image feedly

Ian Cleary (Soul of RazorSocial) shared his view about Feedly-5 Must Have Tools Every Social Media Enthusiast Should Use! image ian cleary

I used Feedly everyday to catch up on any new blog posts from a variety of bloggers I follow. What I love is that it also provides a really nice mobile interface and also integrates with Buffer. It's a really nicely designed app and I love using it.

5. SM Monitoring

In order to make the best out of Social Media, you need to continuously Listen and Monitor! Listening to what your audience/influencers have to say about you/industry, analysing the data and then finally taking certain measures to grow. Engaging, contributing and helping are one of the best ways to formulate a community around you.

There are so many tools for social media monitoring, but choose those ones which are right for you. Tools like – Talkwalker, Sprinklr, Hootsuite, Topsy, and so on.

One of my favorites on Social Media, Mark Schaefer (Author of Return On Influence, Born to Blog, and The Tao of Twitter) shared his favorite SM monitoring tool-5 Must Have Tools Every Social Media Enthusiast Should Use! image mark schaefer

For me, the professional version of Hootsuite is very powerful and can handle the needs of most small businesses. Some of the functions I find useful are saving searches for continuous market research, allowing for easy group management of social media accounts, scheduling content, and the ability to sort content by influence scores.

Bonus: Email Marketing

Like Jake Levine from Digg said "Twitter and Facebook are both streams, products where you accept that you'll miss certain things. An inbox is the complete opposite. Your job is to clear it out. If something is important to you, e-mail products are the one reliable way to make sure you'll see it."

Being a Social Media enthusiast, you must be working for an agency, brand, Non-profit, institution or self-employed. And you should always create a list of subscribers who are interested in listeneing to what you deliver. Here are some tools that you can use to boost your email marketing campaigns – Aweber, Mailchimp, OptinMonster and others.

Lilach Bullock (Founder of Socialable and Forbes Top 20 women) shared her views on Aweber as a tool-5 Must Have Tools Every Social Media Enthusiast Should Use! image lilach bullock

Aweber is a simple and cost effective tool to use for email marketing. It's a great way to grow a list and their split testing and analytical tools make it one of the best solutions for small businesses.

Your turn

There are literally thousands of social media tools available to use; however, the above five (or actually Six) are all essentials that you must have them as a part of your marketing strategy. They have definitely worked wonders with me!

Have you used any of the above tools? What are your favourite must have tools? Do share your insights with us in the comments section below.

Go For a Walk Before Writing a Blog Post

Posted: 03 May 2014 01:30 PM PDT

Graham Jones

Every day millions of bloggers have the same problem – what to write about. Every day thousands of bloggers give up because they no longer have the motivation to write anything. Every day millions of people visit blogs to discover they are dormant, having been left untouched by their originators for years.

Blogging is a great business tool and a central component of the Internet. But over 95% of blogs get started only to die after a few weeks because their creators give up.

The problem at the heart of all this is lack of creative thought. People dry up after a while, having exhausted all the obvious blog posts they could produce.

They sit facing their computer screens, lacking any ideas as to what to put into those blank pages.

Now, new research provides a simple answer.

Get up from your PC and take a walk.

Go For a Walk Before Writing a Blog Post image manwalkingdog

It turns out that something as simple as a short walk is enough to boost creative thinking in almost everyone. Plus, the study at Stanford University found that this increase in creative thinking persisted for several minutes even after the individual sat down and rested.

In other words, if you cannot think of any ideas for your blog or your website, get up from your computer, go out for a half-hour walk and come back and sit down facing that blank screen again. You will be brimming with thoughts and ideas to help you write something, breathing new life into a flagging blog.

Not only that – walking reduces stress, cuts down on anxiety, alleviates depression and is a general health boost.

So, stop reading this blog post right now…! Get up, get out the door, walk down the street and come back ready to write a new and exciting post.

Why Your Boss Thinks You Shouldn’t be on Social Media

Posted: 03 May 2014 12:11 PM PDT

Joshua Speers

Not everyone understands social media and the potential that it has as a marketing and communications tool. In fact, we all know at least one person who scoffs when you mention a Twitter feed or laughs when you start talking about the relevance of Facebook likes. Whilst you will no doubt be familiar with it you may not understand it, so here are some of the reasons why you boss might well think that you shouldn't be on social media.

'My kids use it' – if the only experience your boss has is seeing their children sending Snapchats or laughing at the comments on a Facebook status then this is highly likely to put them off every considering social media in a serious business context. This will be even more the case if they have ever made an attempt to use it themselves and failed…

'It's a waste of money with little or no ROI' – it's easy to see where the impression that social media generates no real 'value' could come from, particularly if your boss hasn't see it in action or been exposed to the real world rewards of getting a social media campaign right. Many people have trouble getting their head around how a 'digital' tool could ever translate into a real world benefit, especially something with 'social' in the name.

'It's just a way to waste time' – yes, it is possible to waste a lot of time on social media, we all know that. Stalking your ex's photos or obsessively tweeting at your favourite celeb can drain hours from your day and if your boss has witnessed this kind of behaviour in social media users in the office, at home, or out in the world around them, then they won't see the value it can offer in addition to being a way to pass the time.

These are a few of the more common reasons why someone like your boss might decide in advance that social media isn't worth the effort. Dismissing most of these reasons just requires a bit of insight, so why not open your boss' mind by educating them to the benefits that social media can offer too.

The Sociology of Optimizing ROI for Social Marketing Success

Posted: 03 May 2014 10:55 AM PDT

Jonathan Cohn

The Sociology of Optimizing ROI for Social Marketing Success image social networking 1If you have any hope of your marketing efforts paying off and bringing you a return on your investment (ROI), you will need to understand the sociology behind it and to truly understand not only what you need to do but also why you need to do it. Taking the appropriate steps and knowing why those steps are critical is essential to your professional success.

Surrounding yourself with the right people

The first thing that you need to do in your effort to get a firm grasp on the sociology of your marketing efforts and how they relate to the knowledge and expertise of your influencers is to start to interact with those influencers. If you don't have a relationship with those people, it is definitely time for you to establish one (and not just any relationship but a relationship that is solid and mutually beneficial). It may be quite challenging for you to successfully build relationships with your influencers for the simple reason that you are up against an environment where they are used to being surrounded by a large amount of useless information from other people. Before you can make headway with the influencers, you need to prove your credibility and trustworthiness so that they will want to have a relationship with you. It will definitely be worth your while to put in the effort to make that happen.

How do you begin to successfully form relationships?

The absolute first thing that you must do when forming a relationship with an influencer (or anyone else) is to discover exactly what you have in common. You will actually both be working together toward the same perfect end. You are not working separately. You are working as one cohesive unit and your success will not be yours alone. It will be yours and your influencer's together. If you share common ground and you have the same desires and passions in life, you will do well together in a relationship.

How does the sociology figure into it?

Sociology is the idea that people are not in silos. They have an innate desire to belong to a group. They are attracted to other people based on their passions and desires and what they want to accomplish (in this case, professionally). In any relationship (whether it is personal or professional), people need to connect on a human level. If they can't do that, they will not be able to connect on any level. The emotional connection needs to be established before anything else. It is not a business transaction that you are going for. It is a relationship where both sides give to each other and what each one gets out of the relationship actually means something valuable. The reason that you want to form relationships with influencers is that your ultimate goal of increasing your professional success will eventually be realized. Everything that you do in business and everything that you are will be influenced by the relationships that you form.

Getting to really know your influencers

As you go through the process of successfully connecting with your influencers and forming meaningful relationships with those people, you must understand that it will require careful planning and a great deal of effort before you actually arrive at the point where you can say that you share a mutually beneficial relationship with that particular influencer. There is a good deal of valuable information about your influencers that you can actually get your hands on and that information is in various places and is yours for the taking. You can look at the influencers' various social media profiles from which you can glean the following information, which will help you a great deal.

  • Twitter: Where the person works, their personal web presence (including their website), areas of interest.
  • Facebook: Friends and family members.
  • LinkedIn: You will find the influencer's educational background, work background, and other professional interests here.
  • Pinterest: The person's influencers, likes, and dislikes.

It is very wise on your part if you can tap into all of that rich information. It will greatly strengthen your chances of successfully forming a relationship with the influencer.

What you should do next

Once you have gathered all of the information that you can possibly gather, it is time to peel back that layer and dig a little deeper. Your next step might include using an analytics tool, which will enable you to understand who influences your influencer and the type of information that is being shared. If you can get your hands on the content that your influencers and their influencers are sharing, you can create content that will make them pay attention to you and your business. Another tool that will serve you well is a tool that actually measures influence. There are several that you can use, including Klout and Littlebird.

Conclusion

If you follow the steps that have been suggested here, you will be successful at becoming well acquainted with your targeted influencers. Regarding the order of the steps (logically), it probably makes the most sense to write the content, place it where it will have the most positive effect, and then introduce your influencers to that content. After that, all you need to do is to nurture your relationships and keep proving to your influencers how valuable you and your business are to them. It is critical that you understand the sociological aspect of your relationships with your influencers so that you can really help each other a great deal. Your influencers will help to bring your business to the next level and your interactions will be valuable and productive.

How To Build A Strong Foundation In Social Media

Posted: 03 May 2014 06:26 AM PDT

Rakesh Kumar

As Social Media takes center-stage, it has become all the more important for professionals and freshers to have a fundamental knowledge of this medium.

Social media might be a dynamic channel which changes every month, but the core essence of it remains the same: Communication & Networking.

Keeping yourself rooted to these core fundamentals of social media will not only help you grow professionally in an organization, but also equip you to adapt every change in the industry with effortless ease.

So how do you go about building a strong foundation in an industry that is as vibrant as social media? Follow me as I take you through it.

Strategy is King

If your strategy is in place, your social media efforts will be far more effective. A good strategy involves understanding the requirements of the brand, its personality and the target audience. This will help you devise a communication and content plan – one of the most crucial aspects of any strategy.

Your strategy will also determine which platforms you want to have a presence on and how you will work on them.

Build a Strong Foundation in Social Media. Register for our Social Media 101 Workshop Today!

Creating a content plan, ideating campaigns and contests, analytics are all tactical activities that will be decided by your core strategy. However, most of us begin our social media plan with these tactics and lose out on the bigger picture. It is always Aim > Strategy > Tactics. We need to move from top to bottom and not bottom to top.

Content Marketing

Don’t limit your content to just the CTAs (Call to Action) in your Facebook updates and tweets. Nor should you view your content as something that drives more engagement. If engagement was the holy grail, everyone would be putting up photos of cute babies.

The way you communicate through your updates tells a lot about your brand. Your tonality, your responses to complaints, your apps & contests and even your creatives are a part of your content marketing efforts.

A lot of us view creatives separately, but the fact remains that creatives are an integral part of your content strategy. So make sure that you stick to a content strategy that depicts the brand in the most appropriate way.

Content Marketing also involves adding value to the lives of your target audience. Create content that your TG resonates and connects with. It can be funny, nostalgic, sad or simply insightful; your job is to make sure that the time your audience spends on that content is a time well spent.

Understand The Platforms

Social media is built of platforms that enable people to connect with each other through various means. In order to come up with tactics that propel your brand’s social media presence on these platforms, you need to have a complete understanding of their features, user behaviour and advertising options (if any).

This understanding will equip you with the knowledge and reach out to your audience with best (and the most apt) form of content and drive real business results; you will also use this information when you’re creating an overall strategy for the brand.

If you are not familiar with a platform, you will end up burning money and wasting efforts.

Stay Wired-In

As a social media professional, you can’t afford to stay out of touch from the world of digital. The landscape can change overnight, and trust me, you don’t want to be caught napping when that happens. So make sure that you are glued to all the insightful blogs out there and stay abreast with every latest update in the digital marketing scenario.

Being wired in will also get you acquainted with remarkable campaigns and ideas that other brands have used.

While all these suggestions may look easy to follow, they aren’t so. You need a lot of practice and regular zooming out from the daily activities.
