How do you get it all done?

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this question … well, I wouldn’t be rich (let’s be honest) but I could probably treat you to lunch.

google pants recallIt seems the people have an endless curiosity about how I get things done. Tom Webster and I thought marketing lifehacks would be a very interesting podcast topic — and it was because Tom and I had some pretty divergent views on tech solutions versus old-school lifehacks to manage a busy schedule.

Some of the topics we covered:

  • Multi-tasking
  • eMail management tricks
  • Tricks to staying disciplined and focused
  • When to out-source tasks and what to out-source
  • How do you handle business upsets
  • Dealing with the tyranny of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
  • The “Swiss Army Knife” of marketing tools
  • Productivity on the road
  • Hacks for expense reports

5 Ways to Connect With Your Fans Using Visual Content

Posted: 20 May 2014 02:00 AM PDT

Anna Francis

social media how toDo you give your customers the best information in the simplest way possible?

Are you connecting with your fans through visual content?

Pictures and video can inspire and amaze your audience in a way text just can't.

In this article you'll find five ways you can use images and video to connect with and add value for your audience.

Your Audience Craves Visual Content

Our brains love images. Did you know we process visuals 60,000 times faster than text? That's an important fact to keep in mind as you develop your social media marketing tactics.

If you have an important message you need to convey or just want to stand out from the crowd, visual content (whether it's a picture or a video) is the way to go.

my kids' adventures collage

Stand out from the crowd by sharing images that convey your story.

Don't worry if you aren't artistic. Visual content is about making sure your conversation is interesting and engaging.

Here are five ways to use visual content to build a deeper relationship with your fans, followers and customers.

#1: Elicit Emotion With a Good Story

Using compelling visual content to tell or extend your story sparks emotion in your audience. It's that emotion that inspires trust and loyalty.

Telling a story that connects with your audience could mean sharing a single captivating picture, an entire album or even a video. Whatever medium speaks to your audience is the one to use.

TOMS has used both visual content and emotion to tell the story of the company's values and overall mission. Using their Facebook page, TOMS demonstrates how their products are really helping people all around the world and how their customers are a huge part of that.

toms image

TOMS uses pictures to reinforce their mission: For every pair of shoes they sell, they donate a pair to a child living in poverty.

A study from ROI Research found that if content includes images, people are 44% more likely to engage with it. That's an important distinction between visual content and straight text.

#2: Make an Impression With Quick Thinking

Is your team ready to jump on in-the-moment opportunities?

Oreo's ability react to events as they happen has become a hallmark of their social media interaction. Who can forget their response to the unexpected blackout during the Super Bowl in 2013?

oreo image

Oreo's quick thinking and compelling picture caught everyone's attention.

Part of what made their tweet so popular was the image they shared. Do you think many people would have retweeted a text-only tweet about dunking in the dark?

The picture made the whole thing work and Twitter users loved it. They retweeted it 15,000 times.

#3: Gain Trust With Useful Video Demos

Sometimes you just can't convey how amazing your product is with a brochure, even if it has pictures. It's a good start, but there are times when you need a little more, and that's when video really helps you shine.

If you're selling a fast car, a brochure can give your customer an idea of its beauty. It can tell you about the car's features, the motor and what colors it comes in. But a video showing the car's speed and agility in action has a much bigger impact.

Videos let you shine in other ways too. They're the best tools for demonstrations and instructions.

It may not sound very exciting, but your customers and followers appreciate it when you use a clear video to explain how something works or how to do something.

For example, if you have a complicated piece of software that's hard to install, a booklet of text-heavy instructions probably instills dread in your customers. Giving them a how-to video is much more palatable. It's easier for them to see how the process works.

evernote video gallery

Watching a video tutorial is faster and easier for people to learn new things.

Evernote has an entire gallery of videos that show the most efficient ways to use their products. Their videos let viewers get in and out and are available on the go. That's really useful to their users.

Give people what they need, when they need it, in a way that's quick and easy and you'll gain their trust.

#4: Inspire Action With Overlays and Quotes

If you don't have an image that's great on its own, you can punch it up with a text overlay to help convey the more compelling meaning you're going for.

Text overlays don't have to be complicated or dramatic. In the example below, General Electric's background image wouldn't have done much on its own.

By adding a subtle text overlay, the image is instantly interesting and shareable.

ge image

The right text overlay can make all the difference in how people interact with your visual content.

Text overlays are particularly well-received when paired with blog posts.

Before you publish your next blog article, find a captivating and relevant image and overlay it with an attention-grabbing statistic or quote from your post. These types of images are perfect for pinning on Pinterest and sharing on Facebook!

#5: Foster Community With Customer Sharing

The crux of social media is your relationship with your fans, followers and customers. Deepen that relationship by asking them to share their images to tell their stories and experiences with your products or services.

Instagram is an obvious platform for sharing those images. Ask your audience to upload pictures using a relevant hashtag and start a small visual campaign around their shared content. That really shows you care about their ideas and interests.

Tiffany & Co. hosted an Instagram campaign called "True Love in Pictures" that sent Instagrammers in Paris and New York out to snap images that represented true love.

tiffany instagram campaign

Encourage fans and followers to share their own visual stories.

They then encouraged fans to submit their own true love photos. Pictures instantly flooded in and the campaign was a huge success.

To create your own visual storytelling campaign, think about the different ways you can use visual content to capture the attention of your audience.

Wrapping It Up

Don't worry about creating elaborate images and videos—they don't have to be overly artistic or time-consuming. They just need to help you create a deeper connection with your fans and let you stand out from the crowd.

What do you think? Are you using visual content to get more attention? Does your audience interact with you more when you share pictures? Tell us in the comments below.

Jake Worthington Has Us “Right Here Waiting.”

Alright, alright. You know I love Jake. I’ve written about him several times this season. But I REALLY love Jake. Tonight’s show validated for me and the rest of America just why he should be the winner of, “The Voice.” If you’ve watched even 1 episode of this season, you know that Jake has an unmatched charisma and personality. If you were lucky enough to see some of his performances (ok, you didn’t think I would forget to include a link to my favorite performance of his, did you? See below.) on tonight’s show, you saw something special and different that we haven’t seen from Jake yet. A renewed vigor. New vocal skills we haven’t heard from him yet. A perfect time to show up and blow the audience and coaches away.

If you missed the coaches’ comments. They were ranting and raving, but the most notable reaction came from Adam Levine. Adam was asking Jake Worthington for vocal advice. For Jake to teach Adam his sound. Jake, buddy, if you are ready this.. for the LOVE OF GOD, re-read my last  few sentences. Adam Levine, one of the best, most unique, most celebrated artist in recent history wants YOU, Jake Worthington, to teach HIM your sound. Adam Levine wants YOU, Jake Worthington, a COUNTRY singer, to teach him how to mimic your voice.  If that doesn’t scream someone that Jake should be the next “Voice,” I don’t know what does.

It’s been a really long time since I have heard a breakthrough country artist, not just on “The Voice,” but even as I jam out to my SiriusXM radio on my way to and from work. Jake Worthington’s sound is unique. It’s true blue country. It’s not contemporary and that’s ok. He has an old school country sound. Jake Worthington is exactly the type of musician that should win this competition and revitalize the country music scene.

Do I have any idea which of the three finalists will be “The Voice?” No clue. I can’t even pretend to know what America will do when they get to vote. What I can tell you is, Jake Worthington deserves to win. He’s pushed himself and his sound week after week. He connects with his songs on levels I don’t think I have ever seen on this show. He has created an incredible fan base. I really would love to see Jake win this thing.

Regardless of what happens with America’s votes, Jake Worthington is “The Voice” in my opinion.

Greg Jennings Plays Prank on Twitter, Pretends To Shave His Beard [April Fools Recap]

Posted: 19 May 2014 06:55 PM PDT

Scott Croker

Sports fans love a good beard, so when Greg Jennings told all of Twitter on Tuesday day that his wife forced him to shave his, fans of the Vikings wide receiver went nuts.

To Jennings credit, he has been preparing Twitter for this prank for quite a while, showing off his bearded progress slowly and proudly.

Sports fans and beard enthusiasts couldn't get enough of it, but thought they had to when Jennings tweeted:

Greg Jennings didn't stop there. He tried to get full sympathy for his fallen hair.

Jennings' Twitter followers fell hook line and sinker for his April Fools' prank. Reactions were varied, but a majority were sad to see the beard go.

After the damage was done and Jennings knew a nation was mourning the loss of his once glorious face sweater, he admitted to his trickery.

With that Twitter breathed a sigh of relief and a number of "Long live the beard!" tweets.

Jennings played his first year in Minnesota last season and caught 68 passes for 804 yards. The Vikings were hoping he would bring in at least 1,000 yards and help create a more dynamic air attack.

Now the Viking hope a fully bearded Greg Jennings will bounce back in 2014. The team should be drafting a new quarterback to lead the charge, and need Jennings to show why he is being paid like a top flight wide out.

10 Common Social Media Mistakes (And Their Good Solutions)

Posted: 19 May 2014 04:22 PM PDT

Michelle Hummel

10 Common Social Media Mistakes (And Their Good Solutions) image Social Media Mistakes And Their Good Solutions1

If you want to minimize the number of social media mistakes you and your business make, here are ten lessons you can learn from others’ trial and error:

Putting the Same Messages on Every Platform

Many of us still making this mistake of putting the same messages on every platform but the social media platforms have their own unique nuances. As a result, it’s important to take time to understand those differences, and then adjust your efforts on each platform accordingly.

Prioritizing Quantity

A few hundred followers who are likely to become customers are much better than thousands of followers who have little to no interest in what your company actually does. So instead of trying to appeal to the masses, focus your social media marketing efforts on attracting your target demographic.

Posting in the Heat of the Moment

One of the biggest social media mistakes any individual or business can make is firing off a message when they don’t have a level head. Whether someone is out having a few drinks in the evening or your company just received a nasty message from a troll, these aren’t the times to respond. Instead, make sure you and anyone else involved with your social media are always calm and collected before sending anything out.

Not Making a Compelling Bio

Since plenty of people’s first interaction with you and your business may be through a social media profile, make sure your profile provides a compelling reason for them to start following you.

Using the Wrong Posting Frequency

Although it can take a little time, it’s crucial to find the right balance between posting too much and too little. The key is to post enough so that people stay interested, but not so much that they feel like they’re drowning in information.

Never Proofreading

Even though social media is causal, you don’t want every tweet or message you post to be full of spelling mistakes. Since that can cloud your message, take two seconds to look for any errors and fix them before publishing.

Using Too Much Automation

Automated tools can help you take your social media efforts to the next level. However, if you rely on automation too much, it can make your profiles look spammy. To prevent that from happening, be sure that automation never interferes with the authenticity of your accounts.

Not Engaging

There are far too many Twitter profiles and Facebook pages that only ever contain links to the company they’re promoting. While it’s fine to share your latest blog post, it’s just as important to share content from other people, as well as actually engage in conversations. By making engagement a priority, you’ll give other users a reason to follow you.

Forgetting the Importance of Brevity

If you have a lot to say, it’s probably best to put it in a blog post. While social media is all about communicating, studies have shown that on Twitter and other platforms, going with shorter messages actually increases engagement.

Misusing Different Features

Whether it’s a picture, hashtag or @ sign, it’s important to know the impact of the different features that social media platforms offer. If you don’t take the time to fully understand these features, it’s easy to accidentally hold back your social media strategy from being as effective as possible.

Billboard Music Awards 2014

Sunday night was the Billboard Music Awards and it was a phenomenal success. It had an average of 10.5 million people viewing which is a significant spike of 11 percent from last year and is the most watched edition of this award show in 13 years. Ludacris hosted the show with his witty talents and infectious personality to keep the crowd light hearted and pleased. The rapper was assisted by a diverse group of presenters such as Ke$ha, Josh Groban, Lucy Hale, Kelly Rowland, and Shania Twain just to name a few.

Part of the success of this program had to do with the great array of performances including:
- Pitbull featuring JLO
- OneRepublic
- Iggy Azalea
- Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan
- Shakira
- 5 Seconds of Summer
- Katy Perry
- Imagine Dragons
- Ricky Martin
- Lorde
- Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert
- Miley Cyrus and The Flaming Lips
- John Legend
- Jason Derulo, Snoop Dogg, and 2 Chainz
- Robin Thicke debuting his new song 'Get Her Back'

The most talked about performance of the evening was the Michael Jackson hologram performing 'Slave to the Rhythm' from his posthumous album. The iconic pop star, who died in June 2009, was able to grace this stage with his incredible talents via a hologram projection making him appear just as life-like as any other performer that night. The King of Pop busted out signature moves and caused many fans to wipe away tears or try to imitate his stylistic dancing in their seats. The performance definitely made history and added a lot to what made this night so joyously successful.

A big winner of this program, Justin Timberlake, funnily enough wasn't even in the country at this time to accept his many honors and awards. To name just a couple of the numerous awards:
- Top Artist – Justin Timberlake
- Top Hot 100 Song – "Blurred Lines" – Robin Thicke feat. T.I. & Pharrell
- Top Billboard 200 Album – Justin Timberlake, "The 20/20 Experience"

- Top Digital Songs Artist – Katy Perry
- Top Radio Songs Artist – Justin Timberlake
- Top Social Artist – Justin Bieber
- Top Streaming Artist – Miley Cyrus
- Top R&B Artist – Justin Timberlake
- Top Rap Artist – Eminem

- Top Dance / Electronic Artist – Daft Punk
- Top Christian Artist – Chris Tomlin

Carrie Underwood accepting Milestone Award

Carrie Underwood also took home the Milestone Award, the only fan-voted award of this show. It’s based off of originality and innovation of their music choices with the three finalists being OneRepublic, Carrie Underwood, and Ellie Goulding. Yet in the end Underwood was the victor. She was very surprised and pleased to know that she has so much support behind her fan base and felt so honored to receive this award.

Overall, the night was full of surprises and general adoration of the entire spectrum of music.

3 Ways to Reinvigorate a Blog

Posted: 19 May 2014 11:30 AM PDT

Amanda Clark

Whether you are responsible for marketing and writing a business blog or enjoy blogging for self-promotional, professional purposes, there comes a time when the going gets tough. Often, bloggers run out of ideas, start to see a drop in traffic, and don't get the social media activity they deserve. To help, I thought I'd share 3 ways bloggers can rebuild their enthusiasm and get back on track.

1. Rebuild Your Assets

"Assets" refers to social media profiles, websites, and the blog. This entails using a new theme, reordering your pages, and picking new fonts and formats for blogging.

This fulfills the "change of scenery" many artists and writers need to become re-enthused about a project. In addition, readers will appreciate blogs that go through makeovers and become more readable, easier to navigate, and professional. The same goes for social media profiles with dated profile pictures and shoddy information.

2. Try Something New

The common side-effect of business blogging is being burnt out writing the same thing day in, day out. Businesses that know what they're doing will form most of their blogs around how-to articles and tips that give readers inside information on an industry. While these may become repetitive, they are necessary.

Still, if the time does come when you're getting tired of writing the same old content every day, it doesn't hurt to branch out. Try one of these post formats:

  • Conduct an interview with a professional within your business or an online authority/influencer.
  • Write up commentary on a trending news article. Make sure it's relevant to your business and blog angle.
  • Create visuals (infographics, images, etc.) and use them as tools in your posts to get ideas across to readers.
  • Write a post that talks about blogging from whatever perspective you blog from, whether it's for a business or as a professional.
  • Consider accepting a guest post from an in-house writer, outside professional, or fellow blogger.

3. Read!

Reading and research are, of course, two of the best strategies for jumpstarting a blog. Visit other websites and see what they're blogging about, whether they're in your industry or not. Ideas are ideas, after all, and there's no harm in finding inspiration.

Personal bloggers need to do the same, especially if they're interested in retaining traffic and reaching new audiences. Find out what makes these external sites more prolific in the already flooded blogging industry. Is it the layout? The entertaining content? The author's persona?

Avoiding Blog Burnout

The above three ideas apply to almost any blogger out there, though they don't prevent burnout in the first place. To do my part, here are a few ways to approach serious blogging without getting bored or overwhelmed:

  • Make a posting, writing, and researching schedule and stick to it.
  • Follow up with comments, likes, and follows to get a better feel for your usual crowd.
  • Focus more on creating awesome content than readers. If you write it, they'll eventually come.
  • Don't worry about SEO, keywords, and backlinks. These elements muddle up posts.
  • Use plenty of pictures and multimedia to spice up otherwise dull-looking paragraphs and bullet points.
  • Speak in first person and add some anecdotes, humor, and personal flair to posts.

Young Baseball Fan Gives Away Decoy Ball To Pretty Girl (Video)

Posted: 19 May 2014 11:12 AM PDT

Amanda Peterlin

Apparently, this week in social media is the week of giving. Whether its Matthew McConaughey tossing Brad Pitt a beer via balconies or a young baseball fan giving a ball to a pretty girl, one thing stays the same: sharing is caring.

On Saturday night's Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Ranger's game, May 17, it wasn't a professional major league baseball player who had the play of the game. In the 4th inning, a Blue Jays foul ball bounced over to the third base coach, Luis Rivera, who generously tossed it to a young fan sitting in the front row. Without waiting to think about a plan at all, the young man decided to turn around and give a decoy baseball to a pretty girl.

Social media blew up with this boy's smooth move of generosity, trying to win over the heart of an older woman, people thinking he so thoughtfully gave away the foul ball. Joke's on her and everyone else who believed.

Watch closely.

The young man catches the ball in his mitt with his left hand. Without reaching for the baseball in his glove, he gives the pretty older girl a different ball that he was holding in his left hand. Some unnamed, possibly untouched random ball. Certainly not the official MLB ball that was hit in his direction.

Talk about SMOOTH. Boy keeps legit baseball, pretty girl gets a random ball.

We could all learn a thing or two from this kid.

Matthew McConaughey Catches Beer From Brad Pitt Across Balconies

Posted: 19 May 2014 11:03 AM PDT

Amanda Peterlin

Facebook top social trends today are vast from recaps of the 2014 Billboard Music Awards to AT&T buying DirecTV for $48.5 billion. But there will always be curious fans who are fascinated by celebrities having real and actual lives.

Matthew McConaughey flew into New Orleans to film an Amazing Race scavenger hunt with Saints quarterback Drew Brees, went outside to enjoy some balcony sun, when McConaughey is shocked to see a familiar face outside on the balcony across the street. Brad Pitt was enjoying his own private sun on his NOLA balcony and started waving to McConaughey like it was any other day in the Big Easy.

Friendly gestures, smiles, and beer tossing ensued. How else do you celebrate an unplanned bro-moment? Pitt went inside, brought back out a brew, and tossed it to McConaughey.

Alright, alright, alright.

Pitt is rumored to be in NOLA discussing his acting in the second season of True Detective. ironically enough, a show McConaughey starred in all of season 1. Obviously no hard feelings. You don't just chuck a beer from balcony to balcony to a person you aren't cool with.

One important thing to take away from this entertaining moment is that Brad has a great arm. Showing off for Drew Brees? Maybe? Probably.

Rob Kardashian Mocked For Weight Gain On Twitter

Posted: 19 May 2014 11:03 AM PDT

Dan Evon

Rob Kardashian isn't looking too trim these days. The reality star was photographed at the airport this morning and, well, it looks like Rob has put on a little weight.

US Magazine reports that the 27-year-old reality star was spotted at LAX with his mother Kris Jenner. The two are currently on their way to Europe for Kim Kardashian's wedding to Kanye West but that isn't what people are talking about today. The big headline, and I use that term mockingly, is that Rob Kardashian has put on more weight.

Rob Kardashian has been struggling with his weight recently. One source claims that Rob is doing daily workouts with one of the Kardashian's fitness trainers but he's still can't seem to shed the pounds. US speculates that it could be a thyroid issue but also notes that the reality star has a bad habit of "binge eating."

Regardless of the reason behind Rob Kardashian's weight gain, Twitter was shocked to see the reality star in such bad shape.

The jokes probably aren't helping Rob Kardashian's self esteem so let's end this on a brighter note. Ray J reportedly wants to give Kim Kardashian and Kanye West the profits from the sex tape as a wedding gift. OK, maybe I should have said a "ridiculous note" instead of a brighter one.
