19th Anniversary of Selena’s Death Commemorated on Twitter With #RIPSelena Posted: 01 Apr 2014 03:15 AM PDT Twitter has commemorated the 19th anniversary of the death Latin singer Selena with a trending tag of #RIPSelena. Selena, full name Selena Quintanilla was a highly successful artist in the 1990′s, and was named the "top Latin artist of the '90s" and "Best selling Latin artist of the decade" by Billboard. Her career delivered fourteen top-ten singles in the Top Latin Songs chart, including seven number-one's. Best known in Spanish speaking countries, Selena had begun recording in English and potentially had an even bigger future ahead of her until her life was tragically cut short when she was murdered on March 31, 1995. The movie Serena, starting Jennifer Lopez, was released in 1997. The #RIPSelina tag trended heavily on Twitter March 31, particularly in states with a high Latino population such as Texas, California and Florida. 18 Ways to Improve Your Facebook News Feed Performance Posted: 31 Mar 2014 08:49 PM PDT Are you frustrated with Facebook's frequent changes to the news feed algorithm? Do you feel like you're being forced to buy ads to reach your audience? While Facebook change is the rule rather than the exception, this article gives you 18 ways you can improve your Facebook news feed performance—and gain the upper hand. How Reach Is Created on FacebookFacebook defines reach as the number of unique Facebook users who see your updates. To see your page's reach, go to Facebook Insights and look at your page's Reach report. You'll be able to see how your reach is improving over time (as shown below). Reach is generally influenced by one or more of the following actions:
All four actions are interrelated. For example, if you publish content (organic reach) that your fans react to, friends of those fans will see that content (viral reach). If you decide an update is worthy of a Facebook ad, then the ad creates paid reach. The more kinds of reach you generate with an update, the more people see that update. And that's where these 18 ways you can beat Facebook's news feed algorithm come in. #1: Create a Content StrategyYou've heard this before, but what really matters in the end is the content. Your fans don't share a post just because they see it the news feed. They share it because it's useful and interesting to them. In the nonprofit world, fewer than 25% of pages have a content strategy, and I'll bet that's true for most small businesses as well. If you need guidance on creating a content strategy, read these Social Media Examiner articles: #2: Know When Your Fans Are OnlineWhen is the best time to post on Facebook? When most of your fans are actually using Facebook. In general, Facebook shows the most recent content at the top of the news feed. If you post an update at 2am, but your fans are using Facebook at 8am, you can be sure they aren't seeing your updates. You can find out when your fans are online by going to your Facebook Insights and clicking Posts. #3: Pay Attention to Post FrequencyAfter looking at your Post Insights, you probably noticed there's never a period when none of your fans are using Facebook. This means you should post at least once per day. Socialbakers recommends no more than twice a day, based on their research. #4: Let People Post Content on Your Facebook PageWhen Facebook users post updates on your page or mention your page, their friends see that activity in the news feed. That's important viral reach. In the update below, Max has posted an update on the Libraries Are Essential Facebook page. Many of Max's friends will be exposed to this page through viral reach because his post shows up in his friends' news feeds. If you're worried about spam or negative content being posted on your page, don't worry. You can easily configure your page to block content that contains specific keywords or profanity. #5: Host a "Caption This" ContestOne thing I've done that's consistently worked well is to host caption contests as a way to generate an instant flood of comments, which in turn creates a flood of viral reach! I give away copies of great books, but you can give away anything you want. Just make sure it's useful and relevant to your community. #6: Reply to CommentsTo build community, you have to listen to and respond to community. People use Facebook because they want to be heard! Responding to comments is important. Your Facebook page has an optional threaded comments feature. This means that when a fan leaves a comment on an update, you can reply specifically to that comment. When you respond, that fan receives a notification, which is incentive to revisit your page to read your response. Increasing the frequency of visits to your page is a key part of developing a core Facebook page community. You can turn on threaded comments in a few easy steps:
#7: Tag CommentersNormally, pages can't tag people on Facebook, but there is one exception: If a Facebook user leaves a comment on an update, you can tag the user when you comment on that same update. Depending on the users' privacy settings, they'll receive notification that they've been tagged, prompting them to revisit the thread. #8: Tag and Give Props to Other PagesHuman beings are hardwired for reciprocity. Generally speaking, when you promote another business's agenda on Facebook, they receive a notification so they know the good deed you did for them. If they're a good partner, they'll return the favor. #9: Repost Previous Top-Performing UpdatesYour content strategy doesn't have to only include new content; you can also recycle your most successful posts to reengage fans. To find and reframe your top-performing posts, you need to know post engagement rates—the percentage of people who saw an update and liked, commented on or shared it. To find post engagement rates, go to your Insights and click Posts. Scroll down to the All Posts Published table, and click the Engagement column to quickly sort your posts by engagement rate. To really get a feel for which updates your fans loved, export at least six months of post-level data and study it. To bring fans back to your most brilliant and engaging content, you can:
An important note here: Don't recycle recent content. You don't want fans to feel like they're seeing reposted content too frequently. #10: Boost Previous Top-Performing UpdatesThere's no way to escape it. If you're serious about Facebook marketing, use ads. What I will say is this: Only promote awesome. Investing in posts that already have a high engagement rate is more likely to give you the biggest bang for your buck—more likes, comments and shares—which translates into more engagement and reach in the long run. Whether you have experience with Facebook ads or not, make time to read Jon Loomer's articles on using Facebook Ads and the Power Editor to promote your top-performing posts. #11: Feature Your Posts in a Like BoxMost people don't know that the Facebook Like box in their website's sidebar has a setting that lets you display your most recent page updates. When people see your Facebook updates in your sidebar, it not only encourages them to like your page right there, but to click over to your page and take part in the conversation. To update your Like box, visit the plugin page and configure the settings to Show Posts (as shown below). #12: Embed Top-Performing Updates in Blog PostsOne constant challenge for most bloggers is finding topics to write about. Take a look at your most recent high-engagement Facebook updates and write blog posts that expand on those topics. Within the post, embed one or more of your best Facebook page updates (as shown below). This approach not only creates more reach for your best Facebook updates, it gives you blog post content that's already been vetted by your community! #13: Message Your Friend NetworksHave you hit a wall on your way to getting engagement? Depending on the strength of your collective friend network, try asking for shares or comments from within your personal networks. Now, obviously you can't force people to do this. But you can have willing parties message their friends at a time when you know your fans are mostly likely to be online. These network shares cause a trending effect among friends connected to your business. When people see several of their friends talking about a topic, they're more likely to be interested in that topic and click over to read more. #14: Guest Post on Sites That Send You TrafficIf you're a regular reader of Social Media Examiner, you know how powerful having a guest blogging strategy can be for growing your business. But did you know you can find potential leads for guest-post opportunities right in Facebook Insights? Within the Visits report, scroll all the way down to the External Referrers section. This graph shows you which websites are referring the most traffic to your Facebook page (shown below). Contact the sites sending people your way and see if you can write a guest post for them. Don't limit yourself to guest blogging. Feel free to explore other co-marketing opportunities that may work as well. #15: Pin Top-Performing Pictures on PinterestWhen you post images to Pinterest, you have an option to include a URL. When a user clicks the image, they go to that URL. Try reposting a few high-performing photos from your Facebook page onto Pinterest and linking back to your Facebook update. Make sure you use the correct permalink for the post! You can find that by clicking on the post's publish date on Facebook (as shown below). You'll be taken to a new page that shows just that post. Copy the URL for this page to use as your Pinterest link. Keep track of how much traffic Pinterest is sending to your Facebook page via your Insights' External Referrer graph. Then you'll be able to determine how effective this approach is in boosting reach for your Facebook page updates. #16: Tweet Your Top-Performing UpdatesSome of my clients have had success scheduling tweets with links to their high-performing Facebook updates. Two or three tweets in 48 hours is plenty. Tweet recent Facebook updates rather than older ones. Make sure you're able to measure clicks from Twitter to the post. #17: Use Email Marketing to Promote Top-Performing PostsThis is one of my favorite strategies to use for my Facebook page. It's so simple and effective, I'm surprised I don't see it done more often. Every time I write my weekly newsletter, I include a link to a Facebook page update. For example, I recently asked my subscribers if they'd like me to write more about blogging, then I provided a link to a Facebook post where they could answer. #18: Identify Best Tactics With Facebook InsightsIn the end, you have to find the tactics that work for your Facebook page. Export the last six months of your Facebook Insights and study them to see what works for your page, then replicate that success with the tips above. Pay attention to which updates resulted in new fans. Look at which posts produced specific kinds of reach and engagement (shares are more important than likes, for example). Over to You Use these tips to generate more interaction through your page and reach more people with your Facebook marketing. What do you think? Josh Kaufman Signs, Seals, Delivers, And Gets Stolen Posted: 31 Mar 2014 08:41 PM PDT Do me a favor, take a gander at this gent and ask yourself: Could he possible have an amazing, soul voice? The answer is absolutely 100% yes. This is Josh Kaufman. This guy packs a huge punch. He has one of the best voices that I have heard in a VERY long time. Tonight he showcased the soul filled side of his voice. While I was disappointed that he was not picked by his coach, I am very excited that Kaufman was stolen immediately by (you guessed it) Team Usher! I know I’ve said this a million times, but for real… Team Usher is a force to be reckoned with this season. This season’s winner of “The Voice” will be coming from Team Usher. I can feel it. Anyways, back to Josh Kaufman. If you missed his performance of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” tonight — do yourself a favor and watch this right now. After you picked your jaw off the ground, I’m sure you also asked yourself these questions: 1.) How does that voice come out of that fellow? 2. ) Why in the world would Adam not pick him? 3.) How precious is he? You didn’t ask yourself #3? Psh. You did. Admit it. I’m not the only one out there that was very impressed with Josh Kaufman tonight. Social media was lighting up with praise for Josh.
While I think that Adam made a big error tonight, I think Josh Kaufman is just one more reason why Team Usher has major potential to totally upset the competition this season. Not only does Josh have an amazing voice, but he is a family man and I think that America is totally in love with that. He is a 38 year old husband and father who also is a struggling musician. He is trying one last time to make a name for himself in music while he tutors high school students. Yikes, come on people. Don’t send him back to the torture that must be tutoring high school students to pass standardize tests. I’m sure he is great at what he does, but Kaufman wants to be, “The Voice” (not “The Tutor”). Are you rallying behind Josh Kaufman? In case you need any more convincing, I am going to leave you with Josh Kaufman’s audition song choice. This version is better than the original in my opinion. You’re welcome for getting it stuck in your head too!

How Social Media Can Help With Lead Generation Posted: 31 Mar 2014 07:59 PM PDT Generating leads is an ongoing task for any business and thanks to the Internet, a task no longer restrained to displays and trade stands as a means of reigning people in. With its multiple platforms, built on interactive communication and content sharing, social media is ideal for generating leads and quality ones at that. However, as is the case with any aspect of marketing, the most important thing is to have a clear and realistic strategy in place. As well as an understanding of the tools you are going to use and how they work. Our article on Twitter's Lead Generation Cards will help you reach out to new leads via a promoted Tweet. The key point to this is that it gets users to submit their details and thus become active leads rather than observers. Of course, tools such as this one are best used when you have already gained a substantial number of followers. Furthermore, those followers are far more likely to engage with your card if you are posting Tweets that are relevant and interesting. Facebook also has its own lead generation tool in the form of the sponsored ad that appears in people's newsfeeds. Just make sure that the ad links to a landing page with form-gated content and a clear call to action. The former is particularly essential for any social media-based lead generation methods and without it you cannot measure leads and conversions accurately. It also means that your leads will be more qualified by default as they have already committed to submitting their details. Facebook's Power Editor is also extremely useful and a must for anyone serious about Facebook marketing. Do not overlook the basics: invest a little time in making your form user-friendly. Minismise the number of compulsory boxes to fill out and keep it on the same page as the spoiler for what users will get after submitting the form The great thing about using the tools available on each social media site is that they include simple analytics so you can track the number of leads being generated, as well as basic metrics to help guide you towards those all important conversions and ROI. For more detailed analytics however, you can set your lead conversion path as a goal within Google Analytics. By tagging all promoted links as a single campaign within Google Analytics you are better able to monitor your social media generated leads and adapt your marketing strategy accordingly. If you could use a little extra help with your social media marketing, please get in touch and we will be happy to arrange a meeting with one of our account managers. Build a #Powerful #Twitter #Network Posted: 31 Mar 2014 07:39 PM PDT Having a million followers means nothing if none of them pay attention to you. The more responsive you can make your Twitter list the more valuable it will be for you to spread your tweets. With a responsive Twitter list you can get many more retweets, and you will develop an audience that is more likely to engage and interact with your content. A more responsive audience means that your content will get more shares, and more comments, and achieving your online goals will become easier overall. If you want a more responsive Twitter list the following 10 tips will help you achieve that goal: 1. List People OftenA "follow" does not have the significance it once used to. For people who have thousands of followers a single new follower may or may not be important, especially since there are many marketers who use Twitter Marketing Software to auto-follow people. Twitter lists, on the other hand, are usually hand picked by people. People are more likely to pay attention if you list them. If you want to make sure you get the attention of the person you are listing tell them you added them to one of your lists! The more you list, the more the law or reciprocity will kick in and cause others to list you back. List and be listed. 2. Tell your Facebook Friends about TwitterOn Facebook you can let your friends know that you are on Twitter in a variety of ways. The more ways you tell your Facebook friends you are on Twitter, the better your odds are of getting them to follow you. You can post a status update saying: Are you on Twitter? If so post your user name below and let's connect there as well! When I posted status update like this it got huge response from my friends and helped me build deeper connections with my network. Another way you can tell people you are on Twitter, without directly saying so, is to import your tweets using a Twitter application, like Selective Tweets. Selective Tweets automatically imports tweets with the hashtag #fb. Another thing I do on Facebook is include a link to my Twitter account in the "Websites" section of my info tab. 3. Connect with Your Existing ContactsUsing the Find Friends feature of Twitter you can quickly connect with your friends who are already on Twitter. As you can see from the image above there are about five different ways that you can find your friends on Twitter. 4. Follow Highly Targeted peopleBy following highly targeted people on Twitter you greatly increase the chance that they will follow you back. One strategy I use to build highly relevant connections is to use TweetAdder to follow everyone on a Twitter list. You can learn more about TweetAdder here, or check out my video review of TweetAdder. 5. Unfollow Unnecessary PeopleThe more inactive and irrelevant people you can unfollow, the better. Why follow people who have not tweeted in a month, or who use the default Twitter avatar? The free tool Manage Twitter makes it easy to unfollow people who do not follow you and have not tweeted in 30 days or more, or taken the time to change their default profile picture. 6. Engage With Your List!Getting people to follow you is really just the first the first step in connecting with them. The real connections happens through conversation, and engagement. Retweet your followers and reach out to them, and they will be more likely to do the same for you. If you look at many of the Twitter Giants like @BrianSolis or @ChrisBrogan you will notice that many of their tweets are conversational, and this is why their networks are so powerful. People are much more likely to pay attention to you if you pay attention to them. 7. Be a Trust AgentI'm not saying don't have a business, I'm just saying it's going to work out best for you if you do not sell directly with your tweets. Try to build trust with the people you interact with, and if you do this they will consider your products and services on their own. 8. Time Your Tweets for Maximum ResponseThere is a cool Twitter Tool that I recently came across called buffer that simplifies this process. When you add a tweet to your puffer it will automatically schedule at pre-determined time. Buffer streamlines and simplifies tweeting, and you can have up to ten tweets in your buffer for free. An 8-Step Approach To A Better Twitter Marketing Strategy Posted: 31 Mar 2014 06:30 PM PDT
Twitter is a social site used today by tens of thousands of businesses for micro-blogging. It is the preferred place on the web where big enterprise organizations as well as smaller brands post short updates, to be precise, an update less than 140 character long. For many businesses, Twitter is a hybrid from the cross of an instant messaging service and a chat room. It is in principle an open forum but as a Twitter user, you can restrict the people with whom you connect. For any business, Twitter is an incredible marketing and PR tool. With that said, if you've decided to finally join the Twitter bandwagon to increase the reach and impact of your business, you are going to need some guidance. Out there, on a social site like Twitter with a current estimate of over 500 million registered users, it is easy for businesses to get lost never to be found by potential customers. So what should you do? What should your Twitter marketing strategy look like? To help you get started with marketing on Twitter, below is an 8-step approach to successful micro-blogging. So here we go! Buckle up and let's get started! 1. Choose carefully who to follow on Twitter On Twitter, what you will come across in terms of updates and knowledge is going to directly depend on the people you follow. Your learning curve will therefore depend on those initial choices you'll make picking out the Twitter accounts worth following. In the beginning, the temptation to follow just about anyone is going to be strong and you will have to resist it. Always remember that your incoming stream should stay relevant. 2. Organize the Twitter accounts you follow So you are on Twitter and you've managed to find some influential Twitter accounts worth following. It might be a good idea to actually organize your incoming stream into lists using Twitter tools including Tweetdeck and Hootsuite . This helps you keep tract of those topics that you particularly care about.
3. Don't think twice about blocking irrelevant accounts Like on the social media giant Facebook, Twitter offers its registered users the possibility to block other Twitter accounts. One of the mistakes that many businesses make is that they opt for ignoring the spammy accounts that follow them but on Twitter, you are judged based on your followers. So if you have spammy accounts following you, don't think twice. Block them. 4. Don't make retweeting people a point of pride On Twitter, businesses often make it a point not to retweet other people's updates. This is not the right approach. As a matter of fact, you should be retweeting people you wish to build a rapport with. If you come across something useful or interesting, share the good stuff. What's the harm in that? 5. Always find new people to follow Setting up a Twitter account and following a few people in the first couple of weeks followed by the occasional update and retweet is not the right approach to micro-blogging. Always make it a point to find new and relevant Twitter accounts to follow. One of the best ways to do this is to find the time and research the Twitter streams of the people you follow. The site's Advanced Search function might also be helpful. 6. Streamline the things you share on Twitter To most businesses, social media marketing is a joke but it's not. You see, having a Facebook account with hundreds of fans or a Twitter account with hundreds of followers is not really the goal you want to set for your marketing strategy. What you should be doing is engaging your audience and finding the triggers that will convert potential customers into buyers. So don't share just about anything you find on the web because you can't be bothered to come up with good stuff. Invest in the content you share. Sure sometimes you can curate content from the web if you are blank on what to share with your followers but stay relevant. 7. Use the weapons in your arsenal, for example ‘Favorite’ Did you know that each time you favorite someone's content or Twitter update they get notified about it? Use this to your advantage. That right there is an incredible tool you have to dangle your name in front of people you respect and wish to connect with. 8. Learn the semantics of the micro-blogging site If you've been on Facebook or Twitter for long enough, you would know that people on a social site tend to speak a language characteristic to that particular social network. Learn the secret language of Twitter. Of course you can refer to the Twitter Glossary but more importantly you want to pay attention to how other people are using the social site. Don’t Be An April Fool (Just Laugh At Others) Posted: 31 Mar 2014 05:59 PM PDT Yes, you may wake up on April 1st and have no idea that anything is different. You may get your morning routine started just as you did on March 31st and you might even forget that it's a new month. But, as you check your phone and start reading bizarre texts or see Onion-esque updates in your newsfeed, you may finally craw out of that first quarter haze and realize that we've landed upon that michievious, sometimes humorous, and uniquely questionable "holiday" – April Fools' Day. While most people enjoy a good healthy prank, some do not share and/or bask in the childish humor. But either way, some companies do everything they can to pull the wool over their customers' eyes and trick them into fully believing something that is borderline (un)believeable – just so they can throw an "April Fool!" right in your face. So beware of those pranks (and always check for a "kick me" sticker on your back) and don't' be an April Fool – just laugh at others who fall for the pranks. And in the meantime, check out some of last year's hall of fame pranks, which might give you a little taste of what to expect. Google SmellsGoogle is notorious for creating something interesting and almost convincing many of us that it's real (remember the motion detected emails?). Last year, Google's prank involved a new product, Google Nose BETA, which was marketed as a product to help users search for smells. The feature incorporated smells into Google's search function and boasted 15 million scentibyte database of smells. They explained that in this world, sometimes we don't always have the time needed to stop and smell the roses, but with Google, they are just a click away. Many had their noses on their screens hoping to get a whiff of the action, but instead, they just looked like fools as they leaned in and got nothing but a nose smudge on their screens. Another level to their joke was a little more strategic. Google advertised an online treasure hunt, which sent users on a wild goose chase, but also highlighted some of Google's product features such as Google maps. Twttr Rmvd VwlsLast April, Twitter removed vowels and initiated a consonant-only plan. The April Fools' Day joke kicked off with Twitter tweeting out, "Trd th nw Twttr yt? Mr tm fr mr twts!" (Translation: Tried the new Twttr yet? More time for more tweets). If you couldn't decode the message or simply didn't want to deal with the guessing game, Twitter said you could pay $5 a month for a premium Twitter service that would allow you to keep your vowels. The company said, "We're doing this because we believe that by eliminating vowels, we'll encourage a more efficient and 'dense' form of communication." They also said, "We see [this as] an opportunity to diversify our revenue stream." The fun did not stop there as Twitter also announced a plan that would allow you to have a longer tweet. Users were granted a whole extra letter for a 141 character tweet, for a price. "The price of the extra character is based on a bidding system reflecting the popularity of the character you would like to add," the company's blog stated. Needless to say, Twitter diehards were confused, but many quickly caught on and joined in the ridiculousness of the offerings. OthersCheetos Perfume Last year, Frito-Lay entered into the perfume category with Cheetau, "a prestige fragrance that celebrates the irreverent, intriguing and playful nature of the iconic feline." The scent advertised that it wouldn't leave any cheesy orange residue on your fingers, but would have you smelling like Chester Cheeto. Yum. Shakeless Tic Tacs Who doesn't shake Tic Tacs? Their packaging is just as iconic as the mints within, but it seems not everyone enjoys the shaking sensation. As their April Fools' joke, Tic Tacs took the feature away and created a new shakeless package that was custom-engineered to be silent for one purpose – No shake, no share! While it may be a good idea, the joke was on us. So be on the edge of your seat and leave your gullibility at home because this year's April Fools' is sure to keep you guessing. Smug Messenger Is Like WhatsApp, Rewards You For Inviting Friends Posted: 31 Mar 2014 05:50 PM PDT Smug Messenger, created by AppRedeem, is a messenger for iOS and Android that lets you send and receive unlimited text messages, photos, voice messages, and video messages. When you invite friends, you collect points which can be redeemed for Amazon gift cards. The messenger is designed to work on all mobile devices, iPods, iPads, iPhone, Android devices, tablets, and even mobile devices that only have Wi-Fi. Smug Messenger's team has been in steal mode for several months, working on the app which now offers a variety of features such as photo morphing, read receipts, voice messaging, group chats, and offline access, that are competitive with other mobile messaging services. In the Android version of the app points from inviting friends can be exchanged for bitcoin, which can't be exchanged on Apple according to their rules. Amazon and PayPal gift cards are available for those without the Android version. This system is of course subject to abuse, and users could spam their friends with invites or try using the service only to gain points. Sheffield Nolan, CEO of AppRedeem however, has been working in reward-based advertising for years now, and is experienced in spotting scammers and distinguishing them from who aren't only using the app for those types of schemes. SmugMessenger has no usernames, connecting only with phone numbers, email, or by integrating with your existing address book. The service is to be 'free forever' for users. ‘Dawn of The Planet Of The Apes’ Trailer (Video) Posted: 31 Mar 2014 05:40 PM PDT The one thing about the old Planet of The Apes movies that seemed least plausible to me wasn't the fact that Apes were talking, walking and building bad movie sets. It was, how could these Apes with intelligence that, while improved over normal apes, still only managed to create a "medieval with guns" society, take down the human race? It had a lot to do with our own failings of course, the old films made that clear, but still. How many Navy seals do you think it would take to bring down the entire town that the first Heston movie is based in? Seven? Eight, maybe? Two teams, for sure could do it. So how did that final blow to humanity happen? The battle in the first Franco film gave us a glimpse of what these newly aware apes can do, but that was with the element of surprise, it wasn't so much of a battle as an ambush and afterwards, the Apes fled to the safety of California's Redwood National Park. Dawn of The Planet Of The Apes might not show us the final blow, they could save that for the 2016 film, but the new Dawn of The Planet of The Apes trailer does give us a a peak of the Apes' capabilities as a war fighting machine. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes place ten years after the 2011 Franco Planet of the Apes movie and stars Gary Oldman and Keri Russell. It is set to release in July of this year.
