Twitter Takes On Video Marketing

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 02:16 AM PDT

Hannah Brenzel

To rival Facebook's push into video, Twitter is buffing up its video marketing offerings. Recently, this social media giant brought on YouTube executive Baljeet Singh as a product director in its revenue organization, where he will focus on three paramount tasks: making it easier for Twitter users to find and watch video, adding more video to Twitter via strategic partnerships, and selling video ad units. The company hopes that its increased focus on video will bring about growth in both profits and user base.

Online video ads are a high-growth area for social networks; eMarketer predicts such spending will surge by 40% this year. Overall, digital video ads will generate $5.75 billion. On a related note, the market research company expects social advertising revenues to grow 31% in 2014, with Twitter experiencing an 87.6% year-over-year growth rate.

Video will no doubt pave the way for this monumental increase, especially due to its effectiveness when included in a Tweet. Twitter analyzed the content of over two million Tweets sent by thousands of verified users across different fields over the course of a month. It found that, unsurprisingly, adding video, links and photos all result in an impressive boost in the number of Retweets. Tweets that included video specifically, received a 28% boost.

Brands and marketers understand the value of incorporating video content into Tweets; now Twitter is out to impress prospective partners with advertising features such as promoted accounts and its newly announced in-line video for Amplify partners.

Earlier this year, Twitter introduced a feature that allows brands to promote their accounts rather than individual Tweets. This high exposure ad placement appears when users search for keywords related to the brand. Though this isn't necessarily video related, it enables companies to reach a wider, more targeted audience (a perk most often associated with Facebook).

Twitter's latest feature, in-line video, will enable Android and iOS viewers to play video footage with just one click. According to a related article from ReelSEO, "The new initiative…is being rolled out in response to feedback Twitter received on the click-through rates of video previews. The site confirmed that previews of video content led to a 3x increase in watch rates and it expects the preview plus one-click option to improve CTR even further."

The feature will be available to 60 major brands, including the NBA, as part of its Amplify video marketing program. As an added bonus, Twitter will host video content directly from its servers to ensure speedy playback.

As social media is the second most popular way people find videos online, utilizing Twitter's video marketing features may prove invaluable to companies large and small. Though these features are not widely available as of yet, you can still take advantage of the high engagement rates associated with video in Tweets. People are hungry for video content and delivering it to them in easily digestible Tweet-form will ultimately encourage increased shares and interactions.

Connecting With People: How to Be Human With Your Social Marketing

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Michael Stelzner

Do you struggle to connect with people on social media?

Are you wondering how to be human with your social marketing?

To learn why so many marketers struggle connecting with people via social media and what you can do to fix it, I interview Bryan Kramer for this episode of the Social Media Marketing podcast.

More About This Show

Social Media Marketing Podcast w/ Michael Stelzner

The Social Media Marketing podcast is a show from Social Media Examiner.

It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing.

The show format is on-demand talk radio (also known as podcasting).

In this episode, I interview Bryan Kramer, a social business strategist, CEO of PureMatter and host of the From the Author's Point of View podcast. His new book is called Human to Human.

Bryan shares what it takes for marketers to connect on a human level online.

You'll discover the techniques that work best and examples you can use in your social marketing.

Share your feedback, read the show notes and get the links mentioned in this episode below!

You can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, Stitcher, SoundCloud or Blackberry.

Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show:

Connecting With People

Why so many marketers struggle to connect with people via social media

Bryan explains that marketers have always learned how to communicate, but never how to be social. Brands used to be able to push out one-way communication to their audience, and it was seen as acceptable. However, since social came about, human-to-human interaction has changed.

Marketers now struggle to connect with people via social media because of fear. With the mass adoption of social media, it has enabled global and public conversations. Brands are now under a magnifying glass and are struggling to find their voice.

people in drawing net on blackboard

Bryan expresses that there's still a lot of fear in the business community because of social. In his new book, Human to Human, he has divided the fears into three distinct categories. You'll hear an example for each category.

  1. Fear of not being on social media.
  2. Fear of saying the wrong thing.
  3. Fear of what engaging means for your company.

Lady Gaga is a great example of someone who engages with fans in a more intimate setting, which is away from Facebook and Twitter. It's within this network that fans help her create content.

lady gaga little monsters

Lady Gaga invited the top 1% of her followers to join her in a private network.

This idea is perfect for brands that are afraid to dialogue with millions of people. They can instead measure it down to a group of people with whom they want to actually engage.

For businesses to overcome their fears, they need to educate their audience and their employees. You need to help these people understand how to conduct a dialogue and how to be human online. Bryan explains that part of it is to understand the different senses, in the way you can interact with people and then teach it to them.

With the sensory marketing that is available right now, there is something for everyone.

Listen to the show to find out why it's important to start with one sense at a time.

Explain what you mean by "In social, content is important, but context is HUGE."

Bryan says that with the convergence of social, mobile and digital technology, it has changed the way we communicate with each other. It's become a floodgate of communication without context. This is where the problem lies.

Over 90% of human communication is conveyed through video language queues. This means that if 90% of what you talk about in person has to be visual communication, then it leaves only 10% non-visual communication online.

You'll hear what Matt Clark at Tweet Pages creates for prospects, and why it's a great example of human-to-human communication.

matt clark

Videos are perfect for visual connection.

This has led Matt to become a speaker for Social Media Marketing World 2014. It shows you how powerful the use of context is.

Bryan shares why it's going the way it is now because of all of the social tools that are available to us.

When people feel like you listen to them, it really makes a huge difference. As marketers, it's easy to forget that you are actually dealing with people, not just numbers. You now have to think in the context of social because the human component is absolutely essential.

Listen to the show to hear Bryan tell a story of a job he did while in college, where he delivered unexpected value to individuals.

An example of a business doing social well (from a human-to-human perspective)

Bryan explains why there isn't really a company out there that he would point to and say that they are a social business; however, one close enough is Virgin America.

The reason why he would chose Virgin America is because they actively listen. Everybody listens online and looks at what people are saying, but active listeners look at what is being said from the human perspective. They look beyond what is said in one statement and understand who is saying it, why they are saying it and understand the context behind the person.

You'll hear what it meant to Bryan when Virgin America replied to his original tweet.

virgin america bryan kramer tweet

Virgin America has amazing active listeners.

One of the best ways to get started with active listening is to set up some basics. Bryan likes to take his Twitter feed into a list format and then personalize it within categories. For example, add people you want to learn about, get to know, already know or who have stuff you want to retweet.

With the sheer number of followers that Bryan has right now, when he does pay attention to them, they're completely surprised that he has picked them out. It goes along way.

Make followers feel special by having direct interaction with them on Twitter.

Listen to the show to discover other techniques you can use to find tweets to engage with.

The story behind Human to Human

Bryan shares the story of when he did a keynote at Bloomberg, where he explained how at PureMatter they have talked about humans for the last 13 years. They have adopted it into their day-to-day speak with clients. They like to humanize the experience for individuals.

human to human

Human to Human was written in 5 days.

During his keynote, one of the slides included the title of his book. The audience went crazy, started to take photos of it and tweeted it. Within the first 24 hours, it resulted in 80 million impressions and because of the reaction, Bryan wanted to take it further.

At the time he was working on a different book and decided to set that aside and went to work straight away on Human to Human. He wrote the book within 5 days and self-published.

The premise of the book is to simplify the complex. It's to take our language and the way we interact with people and simplify down to what matters most.

Listen to the show to find out why Bryan thinks marketers get caught up in their own complexities when it comes to marketing or selling a product.

How marketers should communicate to really connect with people at a human level

In the book, Bryan talks about the six basic human needs. One of them is that humans need variety, which eventually equates to uncertainty. This explains why people love rollercoasters or adventures. They like to be surprised and they like to have different things going on in their lives.

Bryan believes that if you take the six human needs and use them as a checklist against your marketing campaigns, then you are more likely to be successful because you are talking to them on their level.

As humans we respond to certainty, uncertainty, connection, values and variety. You'll discover how to work with these to meet the needs of all humans.

One of the biggest human needs is connection. Bryan thinks that our connection with humans is what social is all about.

An example of this in action was when IBM Social Business tweeted Bryan a Valentine's Day message. He was blown away by the message because it served the primary need, which is connection.

ibm socialbiz valentine tweet

This personalized message from IBM Social Business really connected with Bryan.

Another brand that has made its customers feel special is FitBit. At the beginning of the New Year, they emailed all of their users to congratulate them on how far they had walked the previous year. It was a way for them to acknowledge the users' achievement.

fitbit pig

FitBit emailed customers with a fun fact to acknowledge their previous year's achievement.

You'll hear how more companies are taking this approach, which not only helps people connect with the brand, but adds variety too. It's another way to meet a human need.

Listen to the show to hear what the definition of crowd is.

The importance of disruption when it comes to our marketing

Bryan explains that disruption has been a part of marketing for a long time, since the days of Mad Men. There are two sides to disruption. There is dark and there is delightful. This is where marketers have a choice in their approach.

An example of the dark side of disruption is when a pop-up box appears unexpectedly over an article you're reading. It's when your experience is interrupted in a negative way.

The delightful side is to deliver an experience that really connects with you as a human and makes you want to either laugh, cry or share an emotion.

office workers with laptop

Humans like the element of surprise. Image source: iStockphoto

This type of marketing is more memorable, enjoyable and it will probably incentivize you to purchase the product or service a lot more than if you were interrupted.

Listen to the show to hear what Westjet did as a delightful disruption for their passengers.

One thing that marketers can do now to be more human

Bryan is a big believer of the give, give, give, get policy. Even though the "get" might never happen.

When you give online and share, expecting to receive nothing back, that's what being human is about. You can put something out there that's totally unexpected.

Discovery of the Week

I've recently discovered a cool tool called Tweriod, which runs an analysis of the last 1000 of your Twitter followers. It lets you know when the vast majority of your followers are online and also when you'll get the most exposure for your tweets.

For example, at My Kids' Adventures we have a relatively new Twitter account and this tool helped us find out quite a lot about our followers.

tweriod mka

Use Tweriod to discover when your followers are most active online.

Here are some of the cool things that we discovered:

  • The best time for us to get exposure on weekdays is between 5 and 6 pm PST and 8 and 10 pm PST.
  • The peak time that people are online on the weekends is 9 pm PST and during the week is 9-10 pm PST.

We can now use this data to strategically share tweets during these periods of the day.

I strongly recommend that you check it out.

Call in and leave your social media–related questions for us and we may include them in a future show.

Listen to the show to learn more and let us know how this works for you.

Growing With Content: How to Start a Respectable Platform Others Will Love

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 11:35 PM PDT

Michael Stelzner

Do you want to build a respectable platform?

Are you wondering how to use content to grow your business?

To learn more about how to start a platform that others will love, this episode of the Social Media Marketing podcast gives you insight into the subject.

More About This Show

It's designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing.

The show format is on-demand talk radio (also known as podcasting).

In this episode, you'll learn 5 tips to help you grow your business with content and the story behind Social Media Examiner's success.

Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show:

Growing With Content

#1: Experiment on someone else's platform

Back in 2008, I sent a LinkedIn request to Ann Handley, who was, and still is, the chief content officer at MarketingProfs. At the time, I had spoken at Ann's conferences and written for MarketingProfs on white papers and white paper marketing. The response I received back from Ann in hindsight was very important to me. You'll hear the question Ann asked me and how I responded.

I also noticed that Brian Clark at Copyblogger had started to get excited about Twitter. I'd also written for Copyblogger since they were my target audience.

So I decided to take Twitter on and approached Brian to see if I could write an article about it. The article was titled "How to Use Twitter to Grow Your Business."

copyblogger twitter article

This article became one of the most popular articles on Copyblogger for years. It has received 254 comments in total.

A few months later I reached out to Ann Handley and she agreed for me to write an article called "The Dark Side of Twitter: What Businesses Need to Know."

marketing profs article

About a year later, this article turned out to be the single most popular article for the entire year on MarketingProfs.

Although I knew nothing about either subject, you'll hear how I developed these articles and hopefully you'll see that you can do it too.

These articles were published when the market was ready for them and part of the success was because of the people who shared it.

Take-home lessons:

  1. Experimenting on someone else's platform allows you to make sure that your content will be popular before you decide to either build a new platform with this type of content or start to introduce that content into your existing platform.
  2. Almost anyone is approachable for a journalistic opportunity. When you write for a known platform that is large in your industry, you can leverage your visibility to connect with people. It's an incredible opportunity for you to get some great content.
  3. You can set the stage for something big.

The success of these articles is what justified starting Social Media Examiner.

Listen to the show to find out the other great benefits of when you publish content on someone else's platform.

#2: Do a reverse Trojan horse

In the tale of the Trojan horse where the warriors are released, I want you to reverse it and instead think about gathering data while other people march you around.

In January 2009, I conducted the Social Media Marketing Industry Survey, where hundreds of marketers were asked to complete a very simple survey. In exchange for that information, they received the completed report.

This data converted into a rich 26-page PDF file, known as the Social Media Marketing Industry Report.

social media marketing industry report 2009

The first-ever Social Media Marketing Industry Report in 2009.

You'll find out the type of questions I asked and what the real goal was behind the survey.

Within weeks of this report's publication, over 40,000 people downloaded it and made more than 400 comments. One of the unintended benefits for me was to become the first person to "claim an industry" in this space.

Take-home lessons:

  1. Make sure there is value or a benefit to everyone who participates.
  2. Let your reverse Trojan horse work for you.
  3. Start to develop some content you know people want as a result of the data you put together.

Listen to the show to find out how this report led to great things, and why it gave me a great deal of certainty when it came to the launch of Social Media Examiner.

#3: Build relationships early

In late 2008, I noticed that Denise Wakeman of the BlogSquad was super-active on Facebook and it became very apparent to me that she knew her stuff. I already knew Denise and when I reached out to her, she encouraged me to attend a conference where I met Mari Smith.

I didn't realize it at the time, but these two people would be extremely instrumental in the launch of Social Media Examiner.

You'll discover what happened at the conference that gave me the idea to interview "experts."

jason falls interview

Jason Falls was one of the first people I interviewed for Writing White Papers.

Little did I know when I interviewed Jason Falls that later down the line, he would also be play a vital role in the future of Social Media Examiner. This relationship also led to a speaking slot for me at BlogWorld.

The moral of the story is to build relationships early, as you never know what they might lead to. I've been able to build lifelong relationships because of the opportunity I have given others to share their story on my platform when they needed exposure.

Take-home lessons:

  1. Relationships take time to build. You have to think ahead about the kinds of relationships you want to build now and how some of them may or may not benefit you or the other person down the road.
  2. Invest in the success of other people. There is always something you can do to help people. Make sure you offer help with true intention.

Listen to the show to learn how you can be a gift to others.

#4: Go to the well

A "well" used to be where everyone gathered because it was a place they needed to be. So when I say go to the well, what I really mean is attend conferences. Once you are there, take the opportunity to interview people who are there to speak or are on a panel.

You'll hear how I approached speakers at BlogWorld and the many benefits you can gain from this experience. Chris Brogan recently said that he still vividly remembers his first interview with me 4 years ago.

Chris Brogan shares social media tips.

When you interview high-profile people at events, it's not only a great way to build relationships, but also to develop incredible content. This in turn drives people to your website. Other people also approach you to be interviewed because they want to be seen on your platform.

Take-home lessons:

  1. You don't need to work very hard to find people at the well. Just find the right event and go there. Be strategic about whom you interview, either on camera or just with audio.
  2. It's very efficient. You can walk away from a conference with 10, 15 or 20 interviews that can help your content spread out over time and be very successful.

Listen to the show to find out why these interviews were critical to the growth of Social Media Examiner.

#5: Give awards to others

In my second book Launch, I talk about how everyone is interested in three things.

  1. They want access to great information.
  2. They want access to great people.
  3. They want to be recognized.

In December 2009, I started a contest called the Top 10 Social Media Blogs, where Social Media Examiner readers were asked to nominate their favorite blog. The judges were Scott Monty from Ford Motor Company, Ann Handley from MarketingProfs and David Meerman Scott.

top 10 blog post 09

The winners were announced in January 2010.

Once all the votes were in, the judges helped decide the winners. The number-one winner was Chris Brogan and you'll hear how we referred to him in the post.

The fourth winner was Jay Baer, who was thrilled just to be recognized. Another winner, Kristi Hines, became a staff writer for us.

You'll hear the benefits of when you run awards in your industry and the relationships that emerge as a result.

Take-home lessons:

  1. When you reveal the best in a category, it's a really good gift for the winners.
  2. People love to be recognized. So recognize them.
  3. It can lead to incredible opportunities down the road.

Listen to the show to find out how these relationships go on to greater things.

These 5 tips are how Social Media Examiner went from absolute nothing in the world of social media to what it is today.

I hope you are inspired by this story.

Call in and leave your social media–related questions for us and we may include them in a future show.

Turkey Bans Twitter Prior To Elections, Twitter Offers SMS Workaround

Turkey Bans Twitter Prior To Elections, Twitter Offers SMS Workaround image Recep Tayyip Erdogan Twitter ban

On Twitter's eighth birthday when most of us are checking out our first tweet posted on the network, people in Turkey are devoid of Twitter. In a latest move, Twitter has been banned entirely in Turkey where it has 10 million registered users.

Turkey's Telecommunications Department has confirmed that a "protection measure has been taken" for Twitter, "according to Decision Nr.dated 03.20.2014 of Istanbul Public Prosecutor (Article 10 With TMK Guard).

Twitter which has been under immense pressure from the Turkish government since mid 2013 added that it can't confirm if there has been a formal ban, "that would have to come from the government."

Meanwhile Twitter has offered an SMS workaround in the country. It has advised Turkish customers of Avea and Vodafone to text "START to 2444." Turkcell customers can text "START to 2555."

Twitter ban in the country isn't a surprise considering the ongoing hatred towards social media networks from Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Earlier in the month of March, Erdogan had stated that – "We will not leave this nation at the mercy of YouTube and Facebook."

Talking at a television interview, Erdogan informed that he planned to ban YouTube, Facebook in the country after local elections due on March 30, saying that they have been abused by his political enemies. He had also insisted that strict measures are necessary to stop his enemies leaking "fabricated" recordings in a bid to blackmail him.

YouTube has already faced sporadic ban in the country between 2007 and 2010.

Like YouTube and Facebook, Erdogan considers Twitter as a "menace to society" after the network became an important forum for anti-government protests that swept across Turkey last summer.

Talking about the latest ban on Twitter, Erdogan stated in an unyielding tone that he did not care about the international response.

With Turkish parliament approving a bill last month that gives the telecommunications authority to block websites without first seeking a court ruling, the ban on Twitter won't be the last one considering the elections are quite close enough.

Why Podcasting Is a Trend Marketers Need to Follow

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 10:24 PM PDT

Michael Stelzner

Have you considered podcasting for your business?

Are you wondering if now is the right time to start?

To learn about the amazing growth and the opportunities that exist for marketers, I interview Michael Wolf for this episode of the Social Media Marketing podcast.

In this episode, I interview Michael Wolf, who is the host of the NextMarket Podcast. He's also the chief analyst at NextMarket Insights, where he tracks the growing world of podcasting. Michael's approach to analyzing podcasting is unique.

Michael shares the research he carried out to help him discover more about podcasting, and where the market is headed.

You'll discover why the business category is one of the biggest areas for growth, and the reason why advertisers are now taking notice.

Share your feedback, read the show notes and get the links mentioned in this episode below!

Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show:

Podcasting for Marketers

Research carried out to discover more about podcasting for business

Mike is an analyst and loves to dig deep into topics that are normally around technology and media. However, because he's a big fan of podcasts, he noticed that more people had started to use them, although he didn't see a corresponding change in attitude from people in the media world.

Over the last five years, podcasting has been viewed as a less popular form of media. Even online and new media startups haven't embraced it. So Mike decided to dig in and find out why.

Mike talked to many people including big-name hosts like Adam Carolla, Ira Glass from This American Life and Steven Dubner from Freakonomics. He also had contact with people behind the scenes at organizations such as Libsyn and Microsoft.

During his research, Mike recorded all of the conversations he had with these people, which led to an article he wrote for Forbes in April 2013 called "Funnymen and iPhones: Why the Podcast Is Finally Coming Into its Own."

Listen to the audio clip below to find out what Adam Carolla had to say.

Apple has primarily owned the investment side of podcasts with iTunes. The podcast world hasn't seen great investment in technology, developers or venture capitalists.

You'll find out the kind of momentum Mike has seen when it comes to the investment side of this platform, and what podcasting categories have shown a lot of growth.

Listen to the show to find out what the 2013 Social Media Marketing Industry Report revealed about what marketers thought of podcasting.

Has podcasting seen any kind of uptick in 2013, and if so, why?

Mike explains how the teams at Libsyn and SoundCloud, which host the files, have seen phenomenal growth. Also some of the big-name podcasters have seen traffic reach new records in download numbers every month.

All of the signs are from a metrics perspective. When you talk to people about their numbers, there is definitely growth.

When you look at the iTunes charts, you'll notice there are new podcasts launched every day/week across a number of categories.

top 10 podcasts in business

New podcasts show up on a daily and weekly basis in the iTunes charts.

Mike says that part of the reason for the growth of this platform is that a lot of people see podcasting as a less crowded channel than blogging. It's also a form of deeper engagement.

You'll discover what has created the perfect storm for this new growth in listenership, and why new technology built into cars will produce a whole new opportunity.

Podcasts are a multitask platform that allows people to give you 20 minutes or so of their time every day or week to listen to you. It's very intimate and listeners get to know you at a deeper level.

The big-name podcasters who already have a huge network behind them to fuel their shows have seen tremendous lift in downloads.

this american life

This American Life gets around 1 million downloads of each episode.

Then there's Marco Arment, who's a tech guy and one of the key coders behind Tumblr. His podcast is completely independent of anything associated with the media entity. You'll find out the kinds of downloads he gets per episode, and where he drives them from.

Listen to the show to discover the number of downloads that is seen as a great achievement for independent podcasters.

The threads Mike sees coming together from his interviews

For the NextMarket podcast, Mike interviews everyone including top podcasters, app developers and people behind the big networks. From these interviews, he has noticed that there's a lot of experimentation around podcast monetization.

Mike has heard that if you can get over 10,000 downloads, it's possible for you to attract interest from some premium advertisers such as Squarespace. It's the threshold for third-party advertising.

You can always advertise your own content. This is seen a lot in the business and solopreneur space. Some people do podcasts to build a platform for their own products.

You'll hear about a new platform called Patreon, which allows fans to become patrons of their favorite content creators and artists.

patreon

Mike has noticed that podcasters have started to use this platform.

Listen to the show to find out why there is a value proposition in a podcast.

The business podcast category

Mike believes that the business podcast category is one of the biggest areas for growth.

Although some podcasts—like Dave Ramsey and Susie Orman—are tied to traditional media, Mike says that he has seen the most growth for the last year or two in the independent category. You can see a lot of traction for solopreneurs and experts in marketing.

Mike is excited to see people who are fully independent embrace podcasting. For example, Pat Flynn of the Smart Passive Income Podcast is an evangelist for the platform. This type of podcaster also appears as a guest on other independent podcasters' shows.

pat flynn podcast

Pat Flynn is an evangelist for the podcasting platform.

Listen to the show to hear what Mike means by the rat pack effect.

Is it too late to start a podcast?

Mike believes there are advantages to being an early arriver. Anyone who is first in a category can often build an audience.

There is still room in the market for podcasters and lots of opportunity. First of all, you have to make sure the quality of the audio is great, otherwise people will tune out. The next step is to have high-quality content.

One way you can test this space is to appear on other people's shows. It's a great way to find out if you feel comfortable behind the microphone.

There are so many niches that people want to know about. This is where the opportunity lies.

Listen to the show to find out why consistency is the key to podcasting success.

Are advertisers starting to take notice of podcasting?

Mike believes that advertisers are starting to take notice. If you listen to podcasts, you'll probably hear the names Squarespace, Audible and Citrix. Advertisers have now realized that podcasts are a viable medium with high conversions.

You'll hear why it helps to have the personality who does the podcast read the advertising copy.

The metrics are fairly easy to see, as often there's a coupon code related to the specific podcast. You can see how well it converts.

As the market matures from the metrics and advertising infrastructure standpoints, and the conversion is noted, then it will translate into bigger advertisers and agencies becoming involved. When the audience is there, the advertisers will come.

You can now see podcast agencies and ad agencies that sell advertising. The aim of Jeff Ullrich's and Norm Pattiz's platform called The Mid Roll is to help podcasters connect with advertisers. The way podcasts will be sold will be a big deal.

the mid roll

The Mid Roll helps podcasters connect with advertisers.

Listen to the show to find out what else is coming that will bring more advertisers in.

Other trends on the horizon for podcasting

Mike says that people want to find good talent to bring into their podcast networks. There's lots of independent voice talent out there who do great work and haven't been affiliated.

You'll start to see more new podcast listening services and apps from traditional media players. For example, iHeartRadio has a music service and has also launched a talk version.

i heart radio talk

iHeartRadio now has a talk version, as well as music.

More established people will come out of the broadcast and radio side to create some spoken-word type of service such as a podcast or app.

Mike feels that a lot of new creative voices will appear. Being creative is a huge opportunity. The thing that's so great about podcasts compared to radio stations is that you have no time constraints. Although you do have to be disciplined about what you do and what you create.

You'll discover why Mike feels that podcasts are at the comeback stage, and will be bigger than ever.

So if you're not into podcasting, then start a podcast. If you are already involved, congratulations and stick with it.

Listen to the show to find out how all of these different forms of media are being mixed and matched, and then distributed through all of the various platforms.

Blog to Book to Business: How to Live Your Dream

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 09:47 PM PDT

Michael Stelzner

Do you dream of writing a book?

Are you wondering how publishing a book can help you grow your business?

To learn how you can combine your passion with your business, I interview Jeff Goins for this episode of the Social Media Marketing podcast.

In this episode, I interview Jeff Goins, a blogger who followed his passion and amassed 200,000 monthly followers and published three books—all very quickly. His books include You Are a Writer, Wrecked and The In-Between.

Jeff shares how he achieved his dream of becoming a writer, while building a successful business.

You'll learn what it takes to jump from blog to book and why you should start now.

Share your feedback, read the show notes and get the links mentioned in this episode below!

Listen Now

You can also subscribe via iTunes, RSS, Stitcher or Blackberry.

Here are some of the things you'll discover in this show:

Blog to Book to Business

What do you tell people you do for a living?

Jeff typically tells people he's a writer, although he does a lot of other things. He finds it easier to tell people that, and it allows him to own his identity.

Jeff called himself a writer well before he was writing. It allowed him to step into the title and it reminds him of how far he has come.

Listen to the show to hear why many aspiring authors don't own their dreams.

The story of dreams and fears

Jeff explains that he went solo about 8-9 months ago, but it has taken him about 3 years to get to this stage.

He originally started with a blog, which turned into a side business. It wasn't until the end of last year that he realized he was making enough money that his wife didn't have to work anymore. He eventually quit his job at the beginning of this year to become a full-time writer, blogger and speaker.

Jeff's blog, Goins Writer, isn't his first blog. Up to this point, he had attempted eight other blogs, all of which failed.

The Goins Writer blog.

It was these failures that prepared Jeff to persevere. He eventually set up his personal blog, where he talks about writing and his own struggles. This was an attempt to learn how to build a platform so he could get published and share his journey with others.

You'll hear why Jeff forced himself into writing a personal blog and why he made the decision to give it two years.

Listen to the show to find out what fuels Jeff's writing.

The importance of writing for more popular blogs

When he started a blog, Jeff did the relationship thing first. You'll discover what he did to reach out to the people he admired and why they were a huge influence when it came to the launch of the Goins Writer blog.

Once he had seen the power of this in action, he was able to partner with communicators who had audiences that he wanted to connect with.

Within the first year of his blog's launch, Jeff wrote over 100 articles on 100 websites. He believes it was the single best strategy for building his audience.

jeff goins problogger article

Guest blogging is one of the best strategies for building your audience.

Every multi-author blog out there constantly looks for exceptional talent and it's a win-win for both parties. It was one of the keys to Jeff's success.

Jeff had listened to people like Jon Morrow, who had essentially done the same thing. Jon didn't have a blog for years. Instead he established himself first as a guest author for other blogs, including CopyBlogger and ProBlogger. So before he even wrote a single post on his own blog, he already had an email list of about 13,000 subscribers.

Listen to the show to hear what Jeff discovered when he gave away his best content.

Making money

When Jeff launched his blog, he had a day job working for a nonprofit organization. His blog at the time was not making any money.

He'd read articles by Darren Rowse of ProBlogger, talking about how hard it was to monetize a blog, so Jeff had low expectations.

About 6-8 months into the process, Jeff got the idea that it would be cool if he could figure out a way to make money from his blog. So he decided to build an email list. A year later, he sent out his first email to invite people to buy something from him. It was a very short eBook that he put together himself over the course of a couple of weeks.

You'll hear where Jeff invested his time, which enabled him to quit his day job.

Listen to the show to find out what happened to Jeff that made him realize he had something others were willing to pay for.

How to jump from blog to book

Jeff noticed that a lot of bloggers sold eBooks to monetize their platforms and he had already taken an article from his blog and turned it into an eBook.

Although Jeff knew that a great way to get email subscribers was to give an eBook away, he wanted to know if people would pay for it.

the writers manifesto

The Writer’s Manifesto was the first eBook that Jeff gave away to build his subscriber list.

You'll hear the advice from Jeff's friend that gave him the confidence to charge people for his next eBook. He sold it for $1.99 and hundreds of people bought it. Jeff couldn't believe how much money he made from it.

After a couple of weeks, he took the offer down and decided to invest time in the project to make it a lot better and expand it into a legitimate book called You Are a Writer. A few months later, it was republished and turned into an Amazon bestseller.

you are a writer book

You Are a Writer became an Amazon bestseller.

Listen to the show to discover what else Jeff created at the time of publication of You Are a Writer, which allowed him to triple his income.

How the first traditional book deal came about

About 8 months into building his platform, a publisher approached Jeff to see if he would consider publishing a book. This was the reason he had started his blog in the first place. At this stage, he hadn't even written an eBook.

Jeff couldn't believe that he was on the cusp of his dream so soon. The reason this deal came about was because years ago, Jeff had written a short manifesto for the website ChangeThis and the editor had found it buried in the archives.

His first physical book was called Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into Your Comfortable Life. The basic idea is the "purpose of your life is not just about you; that we are most alive when we are serving others."

wrecked

Jeff’s first physical book, Wrecked.

Listen to the show to hear the inspirational story behind the idea for You Are a Writer.

Tips for bloggers who want to write a book

Jeff says the first thing he learned was that it's a marathon. It's not just about the past two years of his life—it's actually a story of six or seven years of hard work, perseverance and figuring out a way for it to work.

There are moments when you are in the spotlight and you feel great, then there are many times when you aren't. What you see on the surface is just a small percentage of the stuff that is happening underneath.

The second thing that he has learned is to have an idea of what it would mean to arrive. Jeff has discovered that even though he has achieved and exceeded his dreams, he still wants a little bit more.

Listen to the show to hear why everything after this point is just gravy.

The right move

Jeff explains how he had a conversation with an older friend about his fears of leaving his job.

Although it was his dream to become a writer, he felt like he was about to abandon all of the people who had helped him get to where he was. It was Jeff's friend who made him realize that the opportunity he had was rare, and not taking it would be an act of disobedience.

This made him realize that there was a deeper story going on. It was an opportunity for him to do something big and he needed to take it.

Listen to the show to find out why Jeff thought it was about him, not something bigger than him.

Follow your passion

Although most people would say that you should just go for it and have faith in yourself, Jeff explains how he didn't want to hear those words. His answer is to start now.

thumbs up to start now

If you want to follow your passion, then start now. Image source: iStockphoto

You should start to build something on the side. It took Jeff two years to build his business before it competed with his job.

Listen to the show to find out why you need to build a bridge, rather than take a leap.

Discovery of the Week

I've discovered a really cool tool called Canva. It's a web-based design platform that allows you to drag and drop pre-designed templates and customize them.

It supports a huge array of things. One in particular is you can create impressive Facebook cover photos for your pages.

You can also do graphics for your blog, photo collages, presentations, posters, invitations and business cards.

Canva has one of the best designer user interface experiences I've ever seen on any website. When you log in, you'll notice that when you move your mouse around, it reveals incredible artwork.

Once you have chosen one of their templates, you can then choose the text and alter it. Some are free and some you have to pay for. You can also upload your own images.

I think you will love this. Right now they are in beta, so you need to have a friend with a Canva account to give you access, or you can sign up to get on their waiting list.

Call in and leave your social media–related questions for us and we may include them in a future show.

Listen to the show to learn more and let us know how this works for you.

5 Ways Twitter Chats Can Help Your Business

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 08:59 PM PDT

Kristi Hines

social media how toDoes your business use Twitter?

Have you considered using Twitter chats as a marketing tool?

As the use of hashtags on Twitter continues to flourish, conversations built around specific hashtags—or Twitter chats—have become commonplace.

While you may be familiar with how to use Twitter chats for personal networking, you might not know they can also be used by brands to achieve business goals.

In this post, I'll show you 5 ways your business can benefit from Twitter chats.

#1: Connect With Customers and Prospects

Hosting an event is a great way for a business to bring its potential and current customer base together to learn, engage and build a deeper relationship. Not all businesses can host a conference or seminar, but every business can host a Twitter chat.

The key to hosting a Twitter chat that helps your business connect with potential and current customers is to choose a topic that resonates with your customer base. Whole Foods, for example, hosts a weekly Twitter chat that discusses (you guessed it) food.

HubSpot hosts a weekly Twitter chat that discusses the science and data of inbound marketing. Their Twitter chat is run in conjunction with a weekly webinar on inbound marketing, which makes it a great lead generation tool for their business. Especially considering that, according to the Hashtagify tool from CyBranding, the #scichat hashtag gets an average of 12 million weekly impressions.

scichat webinar

HubSpot combines lead generating webinars with Twitter chats.

As the host of a Twitter chat, you can expect to gain lots of new followers each time you hold the chat. In addition, you'll build your social influence (i.e., Klout) when you're retweeted and mentioned during each chat.

As your chat grows in popularity, your business will become synonymous with the Twitter chat topic, and thus achieving recognition as a leader in your space.

#2: Build Authority

Many businesses use social media with the goal of building themselves up as an authority in the eyes of their customers and in their industry as a whole. Appearing as a Twitter chat guest to answer questions about your area of expertise is a surefire way to boost your authority.

So, how does one get invited to a Twitter chat as a guest expert? The best way is to actively participate in the Twitter chats you'd like to be a guest on. Get to know the host of the chat and tweet with him or her on a regular basis. Staying in the forefront of the host's mind and acting as a valuable resource in the Twitter chat is bound to lead to a guest opportunity.

If you want to take a more proactive approach, send an email and let the host know that you'd love to be a guest on the chat sometime. If the host is familiar with you and believes you'd be a good fit, he or she just might agree.

With the goal of lead generation in mind, be sure that you update your Twitter profile appropriately before the chat. For example, if you're a social media expert who is going to be a guest talking about Facebook, include a link in your Twitter bio that takes new followers from the chat to your Facebook services page, book or product.

As the guest of a Twitter chat, you can expect to gain lots of new followers during the chat as well as if/when the host writes a recap with the highlights of the chat. You might even get some business leads from people who find out how knowledgeable you are about your topic during the chat.

#3: Create One-on-One Relationships

As an active participant in a Twitter chat, you have the chance to demonstrate your knowledge to customers and colleagues. The more often you participate in a specific Twitter chat, the more relationships you form and the more recognition you gain in your industry.

Each time you participate in a Twitter chat with valuable comments and advice, you'll gain new followers. You'll also generate leads for your business as people in the chat visit your profile to connect with you, so make sure your Twitter profile is updated to help people learn more about you and your business.

#4: Stay Informed

Not everything has to be about your business's bottom line. Attending Twitter chats in your industry as a spectator can be a great educational experience.

In Cases on Formal and Informal E-Learning Environments, there's a chapter dedicated to a case study on how higher-education professionals used the weekly #sachat as a learning resource for student affairs.

As a spectator, your goal is to find Twitter chats where other professionals and experts in your industry meet to discuss common issues. Marketing professionals, for example, will find lots of Twitter chats with educational opportunities in the Ultimate List of Twitter Marketing Chats by Raven Tools.

#5: Promote Your Brand

If you know that a particular Twitter chat attracts your target customer base, then it makes sense for you to approach the host of the chat about sponsoring. Sponsorship packages vary based on the Twitter chat you're interested in, but many include some of the following opportunities:

  • Mention of your business as the sponsor for the Twitter chat during the chat itself, as well as in articles and social updates on other channels used to promote and/or recap the chat (Facebook, Google+, etc.).
  • Promotion of your products and/or services during the Twitter chat.
  • Positioning of your business as the featured guest of the Twitter chat that allows you to work with the host on questions that help you market your business.
  • Advertising banners on pages/websites devoted to the Twitter chat.

Some examples of Twitter chats that offer sponsorship include #blogchat, #TGTaste, #SocialChat, #FoodieChats and #PPCchat. To find sponsorship opportunities that are relevant to your business, search for Twitter chat sponsorship on Google.

In Closing

Before you decide to be the guest or host of a Twitter chat, be sure to find and observe a chat within your industry so you know how they work.

There are many Twitter chats happening on a regular basis and you can find them on this Twitter Chat Schedule by Tweet Reports, or by searching on Google for your keyword + Twitter chat.

What do you think? How have you been involved with a Twitter chat? What were the benefits? Please share in the comments!
