The Need for Social Media in Creative Industries

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 06:32 PM PDT

Karl Young

There was a time when a new social media platform would simply replace its predecessor, but at present there are numerous sites all sharing the same user base. This would lead many businesses to believe that they need to be visible on all of them in order to maximise the impressions they leave on their target market. The question is should a business use their resources to achieve this blanket coverage or are there certain sites that are far more suited to certain industries?

Picking the right site
Facebook and Twitter might be two of the most recognisable sites for the masses but the popularity of Pinterest is undeniable. With around 75 million accounts it's in the top 5 in terms of size and has achieved its success despite not focusing on the mass audience. Social networking sites have become a lot more visual, this is the case with Pinterest. The site, which consists of images and videos arranged in a bulletin board style layout, has become one of the most popular social networks.

Unlike Facebook and Twitter, which rely on content from a network of friends and followers, Pinterest focuses on the 'interest graph' as it is made up of people who gather around topics of interest rather than relationships.

The question is should all businesses use this type of networking or are there certain industries that are far more suited to certain sites?

Case Study
It's important to understand what social networking sites offer instead of simply setting up an account because apparently that's what you should do. For example, Country Baskets, a leader in floristry supplies and craft materials believe that Pinterest is perfect for their customers. The intuitive nature of Pinterest is extremely similar to the real world process undertaken by those who enjoy arts and crafts, a feature that hadn't gone unnoticed when the company developed its social media strategy.

"We knew that in order to maintain social awareness it was essential to maximise our social presence. The way we've adopted the different sites is to utilise them for different purposes. Twitter is great for interacting with customers and Facebook allows us to promote events, products and content. However, our industry is extremely visually orientated and we felt there were better alternatives when it came to highlighting our brands identity to our audience. Pinterest allows us to maximise our users interactive engagement because they believe there is value in our knowledge of the arts and crafts industry, taking inspiration from the content we have on our profile."

What shouldn't be underestimated is the time taken to build an audience and if a site isn't offering value to its users it can be extremely difficult to cultivate growth. By all means companies should be willing to try to build their social media presence but if it feels unnatural they should also not be afraid to abandon their efforts and focus on those that are resulting in interactions.

Social Media Advice
It is important to understand your customer needs; what they expect companies to do through their social media and what benefits they get from the loyalty to the brand. Once you understand this then it's a case of developing relationships with customers via social and ensure that you ask for feedback throughout.

Try Not To Faint While Watching This Burj Khalifa BASE Jump [Video]

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 04:36 PM PDT

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world at nearly 3,000 feet high, and I'm just speaking for myself here, but when I read that my first thought was not "it would be awesome to jump off that."

In fact, if we read that together and you said "it would be awesome to jump off that," I would salute you for your brassnut-level bravery. If you then followed up with an invitation to a year-long training camp in which we'd be taught to jump off high things with the ultimate goal of BASE jumping the Burj Khalifa, I have to be honest, I'd run into my room screaming like a little b****.

That's because I'm not Vince Reffet and Fred Fugen. Where I saw fear and wet underpants, these two Frenchmen saw opportunity. Where I saw a heart-attack and certain death, they saw a really tall thing to jump off of for, and I quote, "fun."

"When I came the first time to Dubai and saw the tower I said: 'This is the dream, the highest building in the world,'" Reffe said.

"People think you BASE jump because you are crazy, you like to get scared, but we like to fly, we like to have fun," Fugen added.

Hat's off, gentlemen.

Watch these two nuts BASE jump off the Burj Khalifa above, and if you're still conscious, let us know what you think in the comments.

Instagram ‘Explore’ Tab Now Personalized

Instagram 'Explore' Tab Now Personalized image instagram explore

Instagram introduced the "Explore" tab in June 2012, and has made a big change that now displays personalized results. First hinted at by Co-Founder Mike Krieger Tuesday evening, Facebook has since confirmed the news:

"We're always looking to update the types of posts you see in Explore to better tailor it to you. We'll show you a variety of photos and videos that people you follow have liked, as well as content that is trending in the Instagram community."

Instead of simply seeing photos or videos that are popular around the globe, users will also see content based around who they follow.

It still takes into account what's popular, just with an added twist whether you follow a bunch of nature snappers or have a strong appetite for the behind.

The introduction of more personalized results could likely be the result of a purely good decision, and to further combat six-second video app Vine.

Vine currently has 12 separate "Channels" that make it easy to find what you're looking for, and like Instagram, makes use of hashtags in search and within posts.

Orlando Teen Stabbed Over Facebook Post [Video]

Orlando, FL – A 16-year-old is sweating attempted murder charges after stabbing a fellow student over a Facebook post. Yes, you read that right. People are officially being stabbed over Facebook posts.

The two teenagers were found fighting Monday night by police in the area of 131 Briarcliff Drive in Poinciana. According to witnesses, the 14-year-old was walking home with friends when he confronted the 16-year-old about something he wrote on Facebook. The 16-year-old had "ignored" the 14-year-old throughout the day.

They started fighting, and the 16-year-old pulled a knife and stabbed the 14-year-old multiple times. According to a witness, "[the 16-year-old] was holding him [the 14-year-old] by the neck, trying to choke him out and stabbing him."

Both teens were taken to local hospitals. The 14-year-old's condition is unknown, but he is expected to survive.

The older teen told police that the 14-year-old had been telling everyone at school that he wanted to fight him over the Facebook post, but that he had been ignoring his threats. He was confronted by the younger teen while walking home.

Regardless, the older teen was arrested on seven counts of aggravated battery, one count of aggravated assault with a weapon and one count of attempted murder.

Both teens attend the Discovery Intermediate School in Poinciana.

Do you think we'll be seeing more cases of people being hurt, shot or stabbed over Facebook posts, or is this just one of those random Florida things? Let us know your thoughts on this story in the comments below.

Piqora, A Visual Marketing Platform, Raises $7.7 Million image piqora funding

Piqora, a visual marketing platform that works with companies large and small, today announced it raised $7.7 million in Series A funding.

The funding round was led by DFJ, and several investment firms with "Ventures" in their name joined in, including Freestyle Capital.

Part of the influx of cash will be used towards hiring more image recognition engineers, and CEO Sharad Verma says its current offering is "pretty robust," though wants "to eventually be able to identify logos within images."

The company plans on also doubling its 23-person staff over the next year, and open new offices in New York and Chicago.

Today, Piqora also announced a new product called Instagram Conversation Manager, which will allow brands to easily monitor conversations, and engage on the social network.

It works with multiple accounts, and comments and mentions are sorted into separate feeds so they don't get lost in a potential sea of updates.

From Verma:

"The reason why we saw so much interest from the investor community in this round is that this feels like where Marketo was seven years back. The visual economy is leading to a new category of enterprise marketing – that is, visual marketing automation."

According to a February report from Piqora, Pinterest is helping drive nearly 80 percent more revenue in 2014.

Facebook shared its Q1 2014 earnings today, and beat analyst expectations with revenue of $2.5 billion, a 72 percent increase compared to a year prior.

Mobile ad revenue now accounts for nearly 60 percent of total revenues, and the social network saw earnings per share of 34 cents.

Expectations were at $2.36 billion in revenue, and earnings of 24 cents per share. Monthly and daily active users saw a four and 5.9 percent increase year-over-year, hitting 1.23 billion and 757 million respectively.

Combined ad revenue is up 82 percent from Q1 2013, but revenue from Payments saw a decrease of $4 million over the past quarter.

Mobile continues to be a hot spot for Facebook, and mobile monthly active users surpassed one billion for the first time ever.

That's a 34 percent increase year-over-year, and daily mobile active users have increased 43 percent.

From Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg:

"The fact that we have a mobile ad product that we've added it into the News Feed, and we continue to see strong mobile ad performance — Our ads work, and they're working for marketers."

During the first quarter of 2014, the social network acquired WhatsApp for $16 billion, and virtual reality headset manufacturer Oculus for $2 billion, both cash and stock deals.

Currently in after hours, Facebook stock is up nearly five percent to just over $64.

Kylie Jenner is done with Vine. The reality star sent out a message to her fans today saying that it was time to say goodbye to Kylizzle.

Jenner didn't give a specific reason for her departure from Vine but it may have had something to do with the platform's app.

Jenner's fans were absolutely devastated with the news. People begged her to change her mind and demanded an explanation. Some even complained that their lives would be empty without those little short six second videos.

Kylie Jenner had close to 1 million followers on Vine. It appears that her account is still active but she'll probably end up deleting it soon. But don't worry, her videos are here to stay. Here's a compilation of all of Kylizzle's vines.

The Generation Screen

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 03:03 PM PDT

The Generation Screen image Generation Screen 600x367

Generation Z

Sometimes I watch my 10 year old son Jake using my phone and wonder, how in the world did he figure that out?

They’re calling kids Jake’s age, Generation Z but I like to call them Generation Screen. It’s like they can pick up anything with a screen (like a smartphone or tablet) and just instinctively know what to do.

They start scrolling, clicking and the next thing you know, they’re watching a video about Annoying Orange singing Gangnam Style. I speak from personal experience as I’ve already had to hear that Annoying Orange video in the car WAY too many times and the cartoon lives up to his name. He’s totally annoying.

The thing that gets me is — how did he know how to find it or even figure out YouTube? When I was his age, I was lucky to figure out how to hit the record button on my hand-held cassette tape recorder to record a song from the radio.

Instant gratification and globally aware

Who are these kids that will step into the workforce and be the next big target audience?

Gen Z are those born between 1992 – 2010. Raised in a world where they never knew a day without the internet, this audience is constantly connected to the world around them.

They live in a reality filled with school shootings, watching their parents lose their jobs and apps that do everything from play games to make sure their homes are locked up tight. With all these things happening around them, you’d think they’d be full of fear and hide from the bad things happening in our current environment.

Ironically, Gen Z appears to be just the opposite. Their connection to the internet has spurred them to learn more about how to deal with these problems rather than run away from them. In their ever inquisitive minds, the world doesn’t seem so big when they look at it through the screen on their iPads.

Connecting to Gen Z

If you see the possibility of Gen Z becoming your target audience, take a look at these suggestions about how your company can connect with them.

But before I jump into my breakdown, I want you to know that Zs are not your typical customers who will be brand loyal. It’s all about the product at that moment for them.

Just know going into this that if your product or service is something that reflects the reality they live, then you can lay the foundation for creating a customer for life.

1. Mobile is their middle name

About 75% of American teens ages 12-17 now own a cell phone. And they use it All. The. Time. The number one method for Zs to get online information is to use a cell phone.

If Gen Z is your target and you’ve always wondered about creating a mobile campaign, now would be the time to learn how to fit mobile text-based messages into your marketing mix.

Just think about this:  Pew Research Internet’s "Teens 2012: Truth, Trends, and Myths” report shows that Gen Z sends about 60 texts a DAY. Yes, you read that correctly.

And email? Only 6% use email to communicate and 39% say they never use email. So if you’re looking to reach Gen Z, stay away from an email marketing program and shift your marketing plans to mobile.

2. Facebook is good but Instagram rocks

Gen Z are on Facebook but their preferred social program is Instagram. Maybe it’s because their parents are commenting on their updates or their grandma is posting their baby pictures in their feeds.

Whatever the reason, Zs don’t seem to be as interested in dealing with Facebook and figuring out the latest changes to the home page.

Their top social activity is posting photos and videos so it’s really no surprise that they’ve gravitated to Instagram. The site lets them comment and engage with each other and now with Instagram’s new Direct feature, they can send photos to private groups of friends.

If your company wants to connect with this demo on Instagram, take your marketing plans to a more creative level. Like Gen Y, this group of social users want more than just your basic engagement and responding to comments.

They’re looking for more from your company to see how your products fit into their world. Take your engagement-type posts and turn them into an opportunity to start a conversation.

3. Twitter use on the rise

It could be that this is the place for kids to use their text talk. It could be the instant communication they get from tweeting but the use of Twitter is increasing with the Gen Z crowd.

Reports from 2013 are showing that 30% of teens call Twitter their top social network, which is only slightly behind the 33% who chose Facebook.

The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project reveals that girls are more likely than boys to be tweeting (31% vs. 19%), with girls aged 14-17 as the most active group (39%).

This doesn’t surprise me as I’ve spent the day with my 15 year old niece. She’s on her phone the entire time we’re together, typing messages to her friends. I almost never see her dial the phone and talk to anyone so it makes perfect sense to me that girls would move towards Twitter as just another way to communicate online with their friends.

What I am is what I am

With all the statistics and general statements I read during my Gen Z research, trust me when I say -  Zs are the first to defend their individuality. They listen to their own music on iPods rather than the radio. They wear what they want and not what the kid down the street has and they follow the beat of their own drum.

I know this from personal experience of watching my son Jake grow up. His intelligence goes beyond just book smarts and he’s always up for a challenge.

When people ask me what he wants to do when he grows up, I shrug my shoulders. I truly believe that my son will have a job working in a field that doesn’t even exist right now.

He’ll help create something that’s just a sketch in someone’s online drawing program. Or maybe, he’ll invent something that we haven’t imagined yet.

And then some days, he reminds me that he’s just a 10 year old boy. Those are the days when we can be mommy and Jake. And then I mess with him and tell him that his mother is older than internet.

That one always freaks him out.

PS Have you signed up  for my Social Media with Strategy online course? It's FREE and you'll learn how to find your target audience, which social media program and how to create marketing messages that really connect with them.  What's stopping you from learning more about how to find your inner social media-ness?

Crazy Grandma Photo Prank Will Make You Question Your Sanity [Video]

Redditor Rojugi wrote "the best pranks don't scare or annoy, they make the victim question their own sanity" with the above video, submitted to r/videos today.

To that, we say:

Crazy Grandma Photo Prank Will Make You Question Your Sanity [Video] image tumblr m9en10uqX41qit8aco3 500

The clip originally comes from Just for Laughs: Gags, a Canadian Candid Camera-style prank show on the air since 2000. Here's the description of the video from JFL's YouTube channel:

"This crazy old lady who seems to be talking to herself tells people that its her husband and asks people to take a polaroid picture with him. With a flash, the invisible husband becomes visible. Surely there must be an explanation."

The video was originally uploaded to YouTube in February 2011, but is going viral online again today thanks to reddit, where it has received nearly 2,500 upvotes on r/videos.

Check out the "crazy grandma photo prank" above and let us know what you think in the comments. How would you feel if you were asked to take a photo of a person's imaginary friend, looked at the photo, and saw a person that you're sure isn't actually there?
