SkinneePix Selfie Editor Promises To Make You Look 15 Pounds Lighter

There are many angle-savvy selfie savants out there who always seem to take the perfect self-shot. But some of us, for one reason or another, are never entirely pleased with our digital appearance.

This negative self-perception regarding our exterior, fueled by our image-obsessed culture has inspired many selfie-takers to consider the extremes of plastic surgery in order to augment their future photos.

While I don't personally agree 100 percent with the "Getting Healthy with My Selfie" philosophy behind the product I'm about to mention, it is a cheaper alternative to going under the knife for appearance-sake.

Pretty Smart Women LLC, the makers of a new iPhone app SkinneePix, offer the ability to digitally edit your selfies – specifically promising to make you look five, 10, or 15 pounds lighter.

The app uses facial-detection software to shave pounds from the face only. SkinneePix does not slim the appearance of the body. And to note, the SkinneePix app only works for single shots, not group shots.

Users can take photos from both the front and rear-facing cameras on their smartphone or import images for editing.

Thereafter, a little bar pops up under the photo and gives four options to shed weight from your selfies: 0, 5, 10 and 15 pounds.

SkinneePix is available on Apple App Store for $0.99 and will be released soon for Android devices as well.

As simple and well-intentioned as the app sounds, several reports, including one from an ABC affiliate, suggests SkinneePix does raise some concerns about body image. While the makers of SkinneePix argue their app simply helps combat bad lighting and close-up angles that add weight to selfies, critics are concerned the app could promote an unhealthy body image and lead to serious issues, like eating disorders.

The Death of Archie Andrews: Twitter Reacts to Comic Book Icon Archie's Death #ArchieRIP image o RIP ARCHIE 570

Archie Andrews, the long-time comic book icon, is set to die in the conclusion to the "Life with Archie" series.

According to the New York Post, Archie will end the long-running series as a hero, saving his friend and in the process receiving a fatal gunshot wound.

John L. Goldwater, author of the Archie series of comic books, released a statement concerning the controversial move.

We've been building up to this moment since we launched 'Life with Archie' five years ago and knew that any book that was telling the story of Archie's life as an adult had to also show his final moment. This story is going to inspire a wide range of reactions because we all feel so close to Archie. Fans will laugh, cry, jump off the edge of their seats and hopefully understand why this comic will go down as one of the most important moments in Archie's entire history. It's the biggest story we've ever done, and we're supremely proud of it.

Twitter, using the trending hashtag #ArchieRIP, almost immediately reacted to the announcement with sadness, humor, and wry wit:

Issue number 37 will jump a year into the future to see how the Riverdale crew copes with the death of their loved friend. Prepare for a torrent of tears and tumblr posts.

Jake Worthington Steals The Show

Let’s hypothetically say you try out for “The Voice” and during the blind auditions you get NO chair turns for the coaches. Not one. Zip. Nada. None. What do you do? Besides not make it on the show that season, you may be sad, you make take the coaches feedback to heart, and if you are Jake Worthington, you come back and audition again and get three chair turns. Jake joined Team Blake this year and I think that he has flown under the radar a bit, until tonight.

I’m going to be honest, in the past few weeks I haven’t listened to Jake and thought much about him becoming, “The Voice.” But tonight’s performance made me a believer. Wow. Jake Worthington, where have you been? Do I think Jake had the best musical performance tonight? That part is debatable, but what I can say is that he was by far the most engaging with the audience, the most entertaining and the most genuine and authentic of all the artists on Team Blake tonight. I did not stop smiling the entire time.

Full disclosure: I love country music. I mean I really love it, but you don’t have to be a country music lover to appreciate the wonder that is Jake Worthington. Even Adam Levine wanted Jake on his team and continued to express that tonight. I feel really comfortable saying: Jake, you very well could be the next big country star.  You could be “The Voice.” You sang the crap out of “Anywhere With You.” Believe in yourself, because we believe in you!

Shakira said this about Jake, ”Jake is the guy next door and if he continues to maintain that authenticity, he will win everybody over.” I could not agree more. There was nothing fake with Jake (see what I did there?). His performance and his interviews are 100% genuine. Who we saw tonight and through this competition is who Jake Worthington is. He says what he’s thinking, he loves the crowd and the crowd loves him. He isn’t afraid to be himself in front of millions of people and I LOVE that about him.

Nothing is forced for Jake. Tonight he even make a brief joke about Ricky Bobby and then gave us an insight (with tears in his eyes) into his family life with a touching story about how his dad has taught him to shake a man’s hand, look him in the eye and mean every word that he says. Jake Worthington is the real deal. I think I can speak for America when I say: “WE LOVE JAKE WORTHINGTON!” I absolutely cannot wait to see him in the live shows.

Chris Roberts Says Star Citizen Doesn’t Need Facebook’s Money

Chris Roberts Says Star Citizen Doesn't Need Facebook's Money image 800px Chris Roberts GDC 2012

Apparently Notch wasn't the only developer who took notice of Facebook's acquisition of the Oculus Rift.

Chris Roberts of Wing Commander and Star Citizen fame, took to his website to respond to the deal, writing:

Now to answer the myriad forum threads that popped up worrying about the possibility of Cloud Imperium being acquired by another, bigger company – don't worry! We have no plans nor interest in following this path! We don't need to go to anyone with deep pockets to make our dream a reality.

The developer has a vested interest in the Rift; like many supporters and critics of the multi-billion dollar acquisition, Roberts was an early backer of the Oculus Rift, funding the project on Kickstarter.

Roberts made it clear, however, that he was not trying to sound critical of the deal:

I know a lot of backers and gamers feel like they've been betrayed by Oculus "selling out".

I'm not one of them.

Chris Roberts further elaborated on his reasoning, suggesting that the Oculus Rift is in an entirely different situation than Star Citizen ever was or will be:

To mass-produce hardware like the Rift, you need an outlay of hundreds of millions of dollars. Luckily our ships are digital so we have hardly any cost of goods, just the cost of developing the universe of Star Citizen and running servers that Star Citizen's universe will be simulated on.

While many criticized the initial buyout, other industry giants have been supportive of the deal.

Cliff Blezsinki, the famed Epic Games and Gearbox developer known lovingly to fans as CliffyB, supported the deal, suggesting it could only be positive for the Oculus Rift's development:

IF [the Oculus Rift] is going to be (hopefully) a dedicated system instead of a (ugh) peripheral they need their version of whatever the app store would be. Your device is only as good as the store and community around it; if users can't say shut up and take my money, if developers can't post their work then the device will ultimately flounder. Facebook can assist with this sort of thing, as well as having a multi billion user reach.

Star Citizen is currently in closed development, with an estimated release date of Early 2015.

10 Ways Businesses Can Blog Better

Posted: 08 Apr 2014 07:32 PM PDT

10 Ways Businesses Can Blog Better

What makes a business blog good; what makes it bad? We take a quick look at 10 ways any business can (and should) improve their blogs with minimal time and effort. After all, a blog is an online asset and investment in your brand's future.

1. Ditch the Promotion

Too many businesses headline their content with, "This product changes lives!" and other overtly promotional titles. If people want to learn how a product or service beats out the competition or what a company does, they'll read a review or press release.

Keep the promotion to a minimum and only blog about yourself when you have a major announcement.

2. Engage With Topics

The trick to better business blogging is to find topics that are worth talking about. "But how do I do that?" you may ask. Well, here are a few tips:

  • Look at what the competition is doing and do it better.
  • Find trending news articles and write commentary from a business' point of view.
  • Choose topics that are semi-related to your services and products.

3. Brevity Wins

There's no need to publish 5,000-word posts. To start with, doing so takes time and ruins the quality and conciseness of quality posts. Instead, break large topics into manageable chunks and keep them between 400 and 600 words.

4. Make Them Skim

A "skimmable" post is one with quick points, lists, and easy to scan and comprehend facts. Formatting Top 10s, How-To articles, and similar posts is easy when you have a good topic. This increases readability and allows inpatient readers to remember the cliff notes.

5. Use Multimedia

Inject pictures, videos, and infographics into your posts whenever possible. They need to be relevant, of course, and actively add to the content. Visuals take the monotony out of reading and give blogs substance.

6. Authoritative Linking

Use links to outside resources to prove that you know what you're talking about. Too often, businesses fear this will take visitors away from their sites. Taking a deeper look, however, we can see how outbound links increase inbound traffic and show that a blogger has done his or her research beforehand.

7. The Call-to-Action

Every business-sponsored blog should incorporate a call-to-action at the end of a blog. This is a small section that explains how you, the business, can help readers solve the topic (usually a problem or question). Add a link to your site, a phone number, and keep it short.

8. Drop the Formalities

It's a blog, not a press release. Use tight language but don't fall into jargon-heavy, press release-style diction that bores readers after the first sentence. Try a conversational tone on for size and talk directly to the reader, not the customer.

9. Query Feedback

Check up on how each post does in terms of visits and social shares. Next, you can ask your followers what they think of particular types of content. Combined, these investigations can help you write topics that are better received and reach more readers.

10. Revise

For the love of blog…always revise your posts. Small spelling and grammar errors make your posts look amateurish and the opposite of professional. At Grammar Chic, Inc. we specialize in editing and helping whip business blogs into respectable shape. Have questions? Let us know at 803-831-7444

4 Ways Social Media Can Blend Personal Brand and Job Search

Posted: 08 Apr 2014 07:24 PM PDT

Personal Branding Blog

4 Ways Social Media Can Blend Personal Brand and Job Search image shutterstock 97243451In your job search, having a great personal brand is a wildly understated way to stand out and better your chances of getting hired.

Social media can be used as a catalyst that bridges the gap between personal brand and job search. According to Jobvite, 94 percent of recruiters use (or plan to use) social networking to screen potential candidates.

The way you brand yourself on social media vastly influences how future employers perceive you. And with 87 percent of organizations believing work culture is critical to their success, this perception is crucial in standing out and getting hired.

So to help you, here are four ways social media can be used to boost your personal brand — which, in turn, will help your job search:

1. Spring Cleaning: Social Media Edition

Obviously, the way you're perceived online is a huge factor in both your personal brand and job search. But too often, candidates are not hired because of unruly photos or inappropriate statuses found by employers on their pages. In fact, 69 percent of employers have rejected an applicant based on what they found on their social media pages.

Cleaning up your social media pages to eradicate inappropriate content is crucial in maintaining a positive personal brand. Those pictures of you going wild at the bar may have seemed fun back in the day, but if an employer checks out your profile and finds them, it could leave them with a detrimental image of you.

Spur-of-the-moment sharing on social media is more common than ever. But in order to prevent from destroying your job search, you need to be fully aware of what you're posting and the consequences a piece of content may have. The next time you ponder if a status or photo is appropriate to share, think about your grandma. If you think your grandma could see the content on your page and not be offended, then consider it OK to share.

2. Make A Separate Career-Focused Account

Do you want to tell employers how knowledgeable you are about your industry, while still being able to share things with your family and friends that reflect your personality? Many people are achieving this by creating two separate social media accounts — one that's career-focused, and one strictly for personal use.

When hiring managers check out your social presence, they want to see you're passionate about the industry you're trying to get into. With a career-focused account, you can share relevant articles, interact with industry professionals, and even share some interesting content of your own. By doing this, you're accomplishing two things.

First, employers are able to see you're passionate about their industry and interested in keeping up with the latest news and trends that are happening. Second, if you regularly maintain and build your career-focused account (tips here), you'll slowly start to build a following.

The bigger your audience gets, the higher your credibility becomes, and companies you thought would never notice you before suddenly start to become interested. When your dream company checks out your social media pages and sees how influential you are, you're indirectly standing out far more than your competition, and the chances of getting that interview are much more likely.

3. Cover Your Bases

Not even five years ago, Facebook was the dominant social network that everyone was on. But today, they're no longer the only player in the game. Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, etc. are now becoming increasingly popular. People still use Facebook to build their personal brand; but these days, if you're not on all the sites listed above, you're going to have a tougher time getting the attention you want from employers.

When a hiring manager wants to find out more information about you, they Google your name. If you're not present on the big social networks (especially LinkedIn), they'll think you're out-of-date and not current with new trends. Each social network has it's own function, and you can use each one differently to boost your personal brand.

So when someone from your dream company Googles your name and sees detailed, career-focused, and regularly-maintained social media profiles that give them exactly what they're looking for in terms of skills, experience, and how you could fit in their culture — it makes it a lot easier for them to decide whether or not you're qualified enough to move on in the hiring process.

4. Share Career-Focused Content

When it comes to personal branding, content is king. Companies everywhere are using content to boost brand loyalty, following, and engagement — so why can't you do the same thing to enhance your personal brand?

In your job search, it's a plus if employers see you sharing relevant, industry-specific content on your social media pages (especially if it's content they created!). You can even use the content you share as an excuse to build your network.

When you share an article or blog post from a company you're interested in, you can take it even further by using it as an excuse to send them a private message. Say how much you enjoyed reading their piece, and ask them about any opportunities they may have at their organization . You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by doing this.

It's an even bigger plus to employers if you not only curate content, but create original content of your own. Writing your own unique blog posts or articles about a certain facet of your industry is a great way to help you stand out to employers, and even get them to come to you! If you share your content on your career-focused social pages, hiring managers checking you out will take notice, and your chances of getting that interview just got a lot better.

4 Fun Ways to Improve Your Facebook Engagement

Posted: 08 Apr 2014 06:49 PM PDT

Cas McCullough

social media how toDo you need to increase the visibility of your Facebook page posts?

Are you looking for fresh ideas to quickly create engagement on your Facebook page?

In this article, you'll discover four ways you can create better engagement on your Facebook page using social game.

Why Games?

If you're tearing your hair out worrying about the number of fans interacting with your Facebook business page, moderating your page may not be much fun. Worse still, you may be missing out on getting to know your fans on a deeper level.

The good news is that initiating simple social games on your page's timeline gives your page interaction a boost.

Social games on your timeline encourage comments, shares and likes, and build a sense of community around your brand. Plus, as a side benefit, they are also a lot of fun for you and your fans.

Why Engagement Matters on Facebook

There are more than 15 million business pages on Facebook. Add in Facebook's hundreds of complex algorithms that work behind the scenes to help people see what matters most to them, and it's little wonder that page owners find it frustrating to maintain news feed visibility. Because of the algorithms, fans don't see all updates from every page they like in their news feed.

But every time a fan likes or interacts with a particular type of post on your page, Facebook uses that information to determine what content your fan likes most, and makes that content more prominent in their news feed.

So if your fans are mainly interacting with your images, they'll see more of your images; if they're mainly interacting with your text posts, they'll see more of your text posts. Get the picture?

Initiating social games is good for your Facebook page.

Using your business page timeline to feature fun social games creates community among your fans and brings them back to your page over and over again, giving them more opportunities to get to know you and your brand.

If you want to improve your visibility without spending lots of money on Facebook ads, initiate social games to draw your fans back to your page.

Each of these games can be run successfully on a page timeline or in a group—which is good news if you administer both!

#1: Take Your Best Guess

With the recent changes to the Facebook Page Guidelines, businesses can now run competitions on their timelines. For information on the latest Facebook policy, check out our post here.

You can choose to run the "What's Your Best Guess?" game as a timeline competition with a prize or simply to create engagement. Admittedly, it's more fun for your fans if there's a prize on offer.

best guess candy jar

The “What’s Your Best Guess” game can feature anything in any quantity. Candy in a jar is a popular choice, though!

How the game works.

Buy a quantity of anything you think will interest your fans. You can choose candy, buttons, balloons, branded promotional items like golf balls or even toys. Fill a jar, then take a photo of the jar and post it to your business page timeline.

If you don't offer a prize, all you need do is post the image with the words: "What's your best guess? Post your answer in the comments below."

If you run the game as a competition with a prize on your page's timeline, you'll need to ensure you comply with Facebook Page Guidelines and be very clear about what the prize on offer is so there's no confusion for your fans.

As there is just one correct answer, let people know what happens if there's a tie. If there's only one prize, an easy-to-implement tiebreaker is to simply state that whoever posts first wins.

check who posted first

To determine the winner in case of a tie, check to see who posted first by looking at the time stamp on each comment.

See who posted first on a page by looking at the time stamp on each comment. You may also want to put a time limit on the game so people know to post their answer within a specific time frame. This will encourage fans to get in early and makes it easier for you to administer the game.

#2: Ask the Next Friend

"Ask the Next Friend" is a fun and simple game that quickly builds camaraderie and community.

How the game works.

Simply kick-start the thread by posing an "either/or" question and state that the next person to comment should answer in one word, then pose their own "either/or" question.

fast engagement

Keep games simple for lightning-fast engagement on your page or in your Facebook group.

In this example from Queensland Business Group's "Ask the Next Friend" game, 95 people commented and not one person went off topic in the thread.

#3: Name Your Life's Feature Film

Games that help your community get to know each other are awesome for engagement and relationship-building on Facebook. In this game, your fans name a movie that reflects their business or life.

The answers will help fans forge closer relationships with one another.

How the game works.

Ask the question: "If your life/business was a (movie/book/song), which one would it be?"

Remember to kick-start the conversation by answering the question yourself and invite your followers to share the thread so that more people can participate.

movie game

Games can help your community members get to know each other better.

#4: Tell the Story

Have you ever read one of those books where you choose what happens next? This game is kind of like that. One of the best things you can do on Facebook is to harness the power of storytelling. Involve your fans in the storytelling to make them the stars in your brand's show.

Use this simple social game to co-create a story with your followers. Not only does this game result in a fun and engaging story, but you'll also get to know some new fans on your page.

graphic with instructions

Use a graphic to share instructions on how to play the game.

How the game works.

Create a graphic that shares the first sentence in the story and outlines the instructions for participating in the game. You'll also place the first sentence in the description.

It's a great idea to post a follow-up status update to share the story as it evolves. This not only increases participation; it also lets you restore the story if Facebook mixes up the order of comments.

story update

Post an update of the story every so often to encourage greater participation.

Things to keep in mind when you run social games on Facebook.

Make sure your pictures are clear, attention-grabbing and preferably square. I recommend making your images the optimal timeline size of 403 x 403 pixels or larger. You can actually size your images up to a maximum of 2048 x 2048 pixels, so when people click the image, it takes up the whole window.

Include the game instructions and any rules in the post description, not just on the image.

Keep the instructions simple for people to follow so they don't balk at participating.

Kick-start the process yourself to encourage others to participate or tip off some avid fans to help you get the process going.

Round up some willing fans to help initiate the comments.

If your post is getting great engagement, consider boosting the post to further increase engagement and visibility.

Over to you

Creating engagement for your Facebook page doesn't have to be time-intensive, complicated or cost you a lot of money.

With a little imagination and a sense of fun, you can use one of these games or come up with one of your own to encourage participation from your fans so they'll see more of your posts in their news feed.

What do you think? Have you played social games on your page's timeline? What were the results? What ideas for games can you share? Leave a comment below.

Yes, the two people pictured above aren't brothers. They aren't twins. They aren't even cousins. They're just two random people who look like each other and now they're dating.

Katy Perry Dyes Her Hair “Slime Green” For Spring (Photo)

Spring has sprung. Not sure if it's true? Ask Katy Perry's head.

The 29-year-old singer has dyed her hair many colors in the past including pink, blue, and purple. It was only a matter of time before she checked the very specific "slime green" off her list. Perry showed off her new look on Instagram Monday, April 7.

She calls it "slime green" while others may call it "Mayer breakup."

Fortunately, she didn't go all green and walk out of her hair appointment looking like a vegetable (maybe?). She left her bangs and tips black then had them fade into green, pardon me, slime green.

The caption gives a shoutout to stylist Brant Mayfield (@BrantMayfield) and colorist Nina Kairouz (@neeenaboo) from the Chris McMillan Salon in Los Angeles. Once you color your hair so many variations, it would be difficult to find a shade that looks bad.

The "Dark Horse" singer told E! News on March 29 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles' 35th Anniversary Gala, "I've wanted to go slime green for a long time. It's spring time and I think its time to freshen up my look."

She is really committing to the word slime. Watch out, Nickelodeon.

Batkid Throws First Pitch For San Francisco Giants Home Opener

Posted: 08 Apr 2014 06:33 PM PDT

Erica Abbott

Batkid is back at it again, tugging at our heartstrings. Miles Scott, who is better known as Batkid, is a 5-year old cancer survivor who saved San Francisco that had been transformed into Gotham City…in case you hadn’t heard. Scott also spent the day at Disneyland with Spiderman, Andrew Garfield in March after some of the drama that surrounded the Oscars.

Batkid really arrived in style to AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants, complete with the Batmobile, and of course, his Batman suit, mask and cape. Batkid threw the first pitch in the home opener for the San Francisco Giants April 8. The crowd cheered as Batkid arrived on to the field. Matt Cain led him to the mound while holding his hand.

This is one of the things that baseball really is about, after all. This little superhero really has already left such an impact on the hearts of many through his many heroic and memorable Batkid acts.
