7 Steps To Spring Clean Your LinkedIn Profile image shutterstock 184458296Have you ever wanted to reach out to someone that is already in your LinkedIn contact list, but when you went to their profile their contact information was nowhere to be found? Or, perhaps worse… out of date?

You may not be able to fix the profiles of others, but you can take the time to insure your profile is the best it can be. Take the time to make sure that your profile shows your most current, accurate and professional view. It's easy and can be done in 7 steps.

The time to do this is NOW!

Please take five minutes (after you read this post) to check your LinkedIn profile.

Seven steps to Spring Clean your LinkedIn profile

  • Step 1 – Open LinkedIn in the browser of your choice.
  • Step 2 – Just below the LinkedIn logo is the "Home" section. To the right of this is the "Profile" section.
    • Hover over "Profile" and click "Edit Profile"
    • Note: you may need to click on Edit Profile again once on this section.
  • Step 3Is this you? Does the section in the top box accurately describe you?
    • Is your name (first line), title (line 2), region and industry (line 3) correct?
    • If not, select the pencil icon to the left of each line to edit, make the changes and save your changes.
      • Do this for each line. Click Save.
  • Step 4Is your picture current?
    • Does it reflect the image you want to project? If not, click on the camera icon and change it.
  • Step 5THIS ONE IS THE MOST CRITICALThe Contact Info. This is how people can find you. If you are in business or if you want to be in business (students, job searchers, etc.) YOU WANT TO BE FOUND!
    • Look below the dotted line in the main Edit Profile box. On the right side there is a section called "Edit Contact Info" – Click on this.
    • LinkedIn gives you a lot of options for what you want to share.
      • At a minimum make sure your best email is listed.
    • For my profile I also have my phone number, my Skype alias, my Twitter handle, my company website and my personal blog. I WANT people to know how to contact me. You should too.
    • Note: Linkedin's naming conventions are a bit limited for websites. Choose the one that makes the most sense for you.
  • Step 6 – Your LinkedIn URL. Don't ignore the other side of the area below the dotted line.
    • There should be a URL shown next to the tiny LinkedIn logo. Mine is www.linkedin.com/in/jeffshuey/ and yours should be something similar.
    • You can customize these URL's — as long as the one you want isn't already taken. My name is fairly unique so I was able to get my whole name. If you have an alias people know you by… see if you can get it for your LinkedIn alias.
    • Pro Tip: Include your LinkedIn URL on your email signature file
      • If you don't have an email signature… you need one. Make one today. And include your LinkedIn URL.
        .
  • Step 7What Does The World See?
    • When you click on the Edit option you will be brought to a page that says ", take control of how you appear in public search results."
    • This is where you can select what your connections see and what the public sees. Review and select the options that make sense for how you want to be seen by others.
    • There are no wrong options. Just choose what you are comfortable with showing and sharing.
      .
  • That's it! Just make sure you Save your updates and/or click the Done Editing box.

Why do this?

It should be obvious why you would want to do some Spring Cleaning of your LinkedIn profile. The main reason is to make sure you are representing yourself accurately. Not that you aren't representing yourself accurately today, but things may have changed since the last time you made any updates. For example, did you receive a promotion at work? Have you added any volunteer work? Did you join any trade associations?

By keeping your LinkedIn profile up to date you will stand out in your career, you will be able to more effectively manage your personal and professional brand, and you'll be able to represent and highlight your most authentic self.

LinkedIn is the Place for Business

If you are anything like me you use LinkedIn to stay connected with your peers, your industry and to find out who is moving and shaking in the industry. LinkedIn is a great tool for business users and when used effectively it's a great way for people to find you and for you to find them.

There you have it. 7 easy steps to do some Spring Cleaning on your LinkedIn profile. Take the time to review your profile today. The five minutes you spend today could lead to your next deal, your next project or even to your next job.

3 Insights Required For Successful Social Media

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 05:30 AM PDT

Dan Newman

Question: Our company is trying to use social media to drive interest in our product (aren't we all) and we want to make sure not to just do social media like everyone else. Any special recommendations that will help us with this?

If I had to attribute one thing to fleeting social media efforts and wasted time on the platforms it is businesses that really have no idea what their customers want from their social media.

When I'm working with clients one of the first questions I ask them is why does anyone buy your product or service. Many times I get strange looks when I ask this question because they expect me to tell them that they need to tweet more or write more blogs and while I think that is a big part of any successful social media strategy, it is impossible to say that is the answer until you have a much better insight into your customer.

Generally, I assume you know demographically who your customers are and what it is that you sell, but I still believe that far too many companies have no idea why their customers are customers. Solve this and you will have a much better way to determine your social media needs.

So in short, before you spend another minute doing Social Media, I recommend that you spend some time answering the following three questions.

  • Why do your customers buy?
  • Why do your customer stay?
  • Why do your customer leave?

While these things may not seem like they are key to Social Media, it is critical that beyond just using it as a vehicle to tell people what you sell and how to buy it, that you use social media as a channel for sharing what motivates customers to buy. Also, if you understand why you keep and lose customers it will help you shape your business story online, not to mention tweak your business to increase customer retention.

Bottom line is in almost every field there are endless options (or at least more than a few) of products and services. To stand out above the noise you have to know what is driving customers to start doing business with you and to keep doing business with you.

Do you have a strong understanding as to why your customer buy from you and what keeps it that way? Get this insight and watch your social media efforts improve as you can better target your content and promotion channels with it.

First: Social Networking, Then: Marriage

First: Social Networking, Then: Marriage image social networking sites and marriage

Meeting a potential partner through social networking sites and dating-specific sites carries less of a stigma than it used to. And many of these online interactions do lead to marriage.

Last year, an eHarmony sponsored study from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences determined one-third of married couples in the US had met online. The research was based on a national sampling survey of 19,131 people.

Respondents were recruited through an online survey; specifically those who had been married once between 2005 and 2012, and who were not currently engaged to another person.

This research suggested these pairs were more likely to be happier and have longer-lasting and more satisfying marriages in comparison to those who coupled through more traditional means, because they were better suited for one another based on the manner of introduction i.e. online.

Again, the study was funded by a dating site, so take from it what you will. Still, the number of people meeting online through social media sites like Facebook, or social smartphone apps like Tinder continues to gain popularity.

In a more recent article, published by Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, titled "First Comes Social Networking, Then Comes Marriage," researchers evaluated the same data of those who were married between 2005 and 2012, focusing more on those who met through social networking sites (SNS).

Researchers used a weighted national sample of 18,527 individuals from the 19,131, and were able to determine the common, identifiable characteristics of those who met using social networking.

While the survey did not ask respondents to identify on which SNS they met, they did provide three examples of social networking: Facebook, MySpace, and ClassMates.

According to the study's abstract, when comparing other online introductions (via dating sites, online communities, one-on-one communication), individuals who met through social networking sites specifically were younger, married more recently, and were more likely to be African American.

When compared to those who met offline, individuals who met through SNS were still more likely to be younger, African American and or Hispanic males, married more recently, who were considered frequent Internet users, and had higher incomes.

This research found that nearly 21 percent of Americans who married between 2005 and 2012, who met online, met through social networking sites specifically.

Be mindful that while social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter can bring a couple together, the continued use after marriage can also promote an increased risk of infidelity and divorce.

Another Study Suggests That Facebook Promotes A Negative Body Image Among Users

Another Study Suggests That Facebook Promotes A Negative Body Image Among Users image Negative body image and social media study

Several studies have appeared in the last year – some specifically citing Facebook – each arguing how various aspects of social media promotes a negative body image among users.

A negative body image is a distorted self-perception correlating body size and shape as a sign of personal failures. This personal stigma in turn can encourage depression and eating disorders – especially among young women.

One study, performed by researchers from the American University in Washington D.C., asked 103 adolescent girls to complete surveys inquiring about their Facebook usage and about their body image.

Researchers analyzed the information regarding how long they spent on Facebook, and how it had the greatest influence on how they felt about themselves afterward.

They found the teen girls who allocated the most time to photo-related activities were more likely to internalize a thin ideal, succumb to self-objectification, and were dissatisfied with their weight along with an unhealthy drive to be thin.

Another linked anxiety over Facebook photos to eating disorders. Researchers in that study evaluated 960 female college students, assessing the amount of time spent on social media sites, how important "likes" were, and whether or not they untagged photos of themselves.

The respondents who reported spending more time on Facebook demonstrated a higher incidence of superficial, appearance-focused behaviors, a greater occurrence of diet pathology, and were more likely to hold a greater significance in receiving comments and likes on their status updates. They were also more prone to un-tag photos they deemed unflattering.

Now it appears yet another study has emerged, suggesting Facebook is contributing to the lessening self-esteem and body image of social media users.

Akin to the previous studies, this research found more time on the social networking site was tied to a greater likelihood of having a negative self-image.

The study, presented recently at the International Communication Association annual conference, in Seattle, surveyed 881 female college students.

They were asked questions about their Facebook use within the past month, including how often they visited the site and how long they typically spent there.

The participants were also asked about their eating habits, body image, current weight, ideal weight, and class rank.

The average weight in the study was 149 pounds. The majority noted a desire to weigh 20 pounds less than their actual weight – defining their ideal at 130 pounds.

The majority of the college students spent an average of 80 minutes per day on Facebook, explains Health Day, most engaging in reading news feeds and viewing shared photos.

Per the results: odds increase that individuals will compare themselves with others the longer they engage on social media; more so if the person is entertaining preexisting thoughts about weight loss.

In contrast, women who wanted to gain or maintain their weight did not express having a negative body image after logging on to the social networking site.

While the study found an association between Facebook use and negative body image, it was not designed to prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Social Media Content Rules: 7 LinkedIn Tips for Your Business

Posted: 11 Apr 2014 03:34 AM PDT

Kelly Shepsko

Attention business owners! Did you know that there is a social media platform that puts a world of opportunity into your hands by connecting you with prospects with the simple click of a button? Yes… something like this is out there. It's called LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is nothing new, but companies have been recently realizing the true potential of using this social platform for business… especially when creating new professional relationships and seeking out new sales opportunities. With about 277 million members to date and 187 million unique visitors per month, the networking possibilities are endless for companies of all shapes and sizes—whether you are a B2B creative marketing agency or a "mom and pop" B2C clothing store.

Unfortunately, I've found that many companies struggle when using LinkedIn as a part of their online marketing strategy. It's not that it's a difficult platform to use, but because social media marketing is still a new and scary concept to many business owners. Companies are unsure of how to get started, what types of content they should be sharing and how they can keep a good reputation online.

If you're one of those companies, consider these LinkedIn content rules to tackle those uncertainties and start using this platform as a valuable marketing tool:

1)      Complete your personal and company page

Your company LinkedIn profile is a place where you can inform the world of who you are and what you do. Take advantage of this opportunity and be sure to detail your products, services, promotions and examples of work. Also, encourage your employees to complete their personal profiles, because remember—they're your top brand ambassadors!

2)      Use  Showcase Pages to brand your products and services

Showcase Pages were rolled out a few months ago and offer many branding opportunities. They allow you to create individual pages for each product/service your company offers (you can create up to 10 Showcase Pages per company page). This helps you to tailor your content strategy and messages for those who have already expressed an interest in a specific product or service by following your Showcase Page.

3)      Optimize your LinkedIn pages with keywords

Be sure that your company and personal LinkedIn pages are filled with the keywords associated with your business, as long as they're relevant! Include an informative biography in the summary and a list of your firm's specialties. This will help you rank higher on LinkedIn search and make it easier for prospects to discover your business.

4)      Always. Keep. Your. Content. Relevant.

Could I have emphasized this more? Since this social platform was created for networking and business-related talk, be sure to share content on your business page that is relevant to your brand. Share company blog posts and other information like whitepapers and eBooks that your followers could find useful.

5)      Encourage employees to participate

The more employees you have on LinkedIn, the more networking and business opportunities there are for your company! Each employee has their own professional network, so encourage them to share company content and other relevant information on their personal pages that can reach all different types of audiences. It's also helpful if your employees are involved in LinkedIn groups, so you can spread your message to more outlets.

6)      Don't be the group spammer

Too many times, we are tempted to share every great article that we find online. However, it's not recommended to share too much in your LinkedIn groups. While members appreciate good content, you don't want to overwhelm them. I've found that 1-2 relevant posts per week to groups is widely accepted, but be sure to review group rules before you go on sharing.

7)      Ask and give recommendations

Many people trust testimonials over marketing campaigns. Kindly ask your customers to recommend your services on your company page, as well as your employees on their personal pages. This helps create positive branding and positions your company as reliable and legitimate. Also, recommending other connections and companies that you've done business with in the past will show that you care, so they may just return the favor!

While it may take some time to get your LinkedIn marketing down, it's worth every effort. If you'd like to learn more about using LinkedIn for sales, click here to read our blog post, "5 LinkedIn Tips: Be a Connector, Not a Creeper".

As many of our channels for reaching customers are getting strangled, brands are turning to new ways to connect and communicate with customers. One natural opportunity is to align with the authentic advocacy represented by bloggers and other powerful content creators.

In an information-dense world where it is more difficult to become the signal instead of the noise, blogger outreach is escalating, providing both financial opportunity and ethical dilemmas.

This dynamic provides fascinating and entertaining fodder for the latest Marketing Companion podcast. Tom Webster and I dissect some of the most important issues in the field today like:

  • Flout: The New Standard for Influence. Really.
  • Why bloggers are trumping mainstream media
  • A first-hand account of escalating influence marketing
  • Why 95 percent brands are stumbling in the influence marketing field
  • Stepping over the line — Influencer or infomercial?
  • How to create raving advocates the right way
