Twitter Reacts to Mickey Rooney’s Death [Breaking]

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 03:24 AM PDT

Kim LaCapria

Famed actor Mickey Rooney has died, and social media is alight with remembrances for the veteran Hollywood star.

Mickey Rooney was ailing at the age of 93, TMZ reports, and the site indicates that the eight times married actor had most recently been the plaintiff in an elder abuse case against his son — and that he recently testified about the issue in front of lawmakers.

According to TMZ, Mickey Rooney died following a long illness:

"Rooney had been in ill health for quite some time. We're told death was attributed to natural causes … He was one of the most famous child actors in entertainment history. He played the role of Andy Hardy in 'The Hardy Boys' in 20 films."

Over on Twitter, many are posting about Rooney's life and even his advanced age:

Fellow celebrities paid tribute:

As referenced above, Rooney indeed stood well under the average height for males and even actors.

An official statement on the death of Mickey Rooney has not yet been made, but his cause of death is believed to have been natural.

3 great tools to monitor your competition on social media

Posted: 07 Apr 2014 02:42 AM PDT

Lynsey Sweales

monitoring social media

Monitoring your presence on social media is a crucial strategy for any organisation, even if you are not active on many social media platforms yourself. Monitoring your competitors is also really important and shouldn't be overlooked.

It's important to keep an eye on your competitors in order to see what content they're sharing and engaging with, whether customers are sharing positive or negative sentiment and also to help benchmark against a similar organisation.

There are many tools that you can use to monitor your competition on social media, but I'd recommend these three great tools:

1: Facebook Watch Tool

This Facebook tool is an excellent way to measure your brand against your competition and understand how they're using Facebook.

The Pages to Watch tool can be found at the bottom of the Admin Panel and you can use it to track the progress on any pages you want to watch, for up to five pages you choose.

Insights will allow you to see some of the metrics for those fan pages, like engagement numbers, how often they post, and weekly increases in "likes". Don't worry, your competitors won't know that you're watching their stats.

This is a great way not only to see what your competitors are doing but also check what's working best for them and what type of content has more interaction and engagement. This is especially handy for new brands on Facebook to check what their audience likes and dislikes!

2: Tweet Reach

Tweet Reach is a free tool (there is also a paid option for more stats) that makes it easy to quickly analyse your Twitter activity. What it’s really useful for is to monitor your competitors reach (i.e. how engaging they really are). Don't take their follower numbers as a success indicator as I've seen no end of client competitors with large follower numbers but minimal reach.

You simply enter a competitor's Twitter username and then Tweet Reach will analyse the past 7 days of activity or the last 50 tweets; like accounts reached, impressions, retweets, mentions, top contributors and even tells you the most retweeted tweets.

This will give you a whole view of your competitor's Twitter activity checking amongst other things; what's working for them, what type of content is being retweeted, who their advocates are and who mentions them. This can help you tailor or adjust your own strategy.

3: Followerwonk

Followerwonk is a useful Moz application that helps you find, analyse and optimise for social growth (in their own words) on Twitter.

Followerwonk enables you to not only check who your competitor's followers are, but where they are located, when they tweet, what sort of content they share and when, their gender, when they last tweeted – the list goes on!

followerwonk

This is a paid tool but it offers a 30-day free trial.

The saying goes 'keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer’. You should know what your competition is up to. Don't be complacent, don't assume that what you are doing isn't being watched by them also.

To stay ahead in any industry you should always monitor and measure against your competitors.

These are just three of many tools you can use to measure and monitor against your competition – the key is to measure the KPI's that matter to you.

Do you use any other tool to monitor your competition on social media? Feel free to share in the comments section below.

LinkedIn Publishing – Where the Personal and Professional Brands Meet

Posted: 06 Apr 2014 08:38 PM PDT

Gavin Heaton

LinkedIn Publishing – Where the Personal and Professional Brands Meet image LinkedInPublishing thumb When LinkedIn started publishing content via its LinkedIn Influencers program, it moved the social network for business professionals in a completely different direction. For many business leaders, this was a great, simple and powerful way to share business philosophy and insight. It was blogging without needing to have or create a blog. And because each item was automatically shared with your LinkedIn connections, there was no extra work required to distribute your writing.

But there was a problem. It was a closed system, and only a select group were granted access.

Taking a leaf out of the book of every digital business launch from Google+ to the now defunct Plurk, LinkedIn relentlessly kept tight control over their publishing platform. The early focus was on high quality insight from big-name business leaders like Virgin's Richard Branson and Ryan Holmes from Hootsuite. Take a look through their various posts and you'll notice something interesting – a collapsing of the personal and professional. The most popular articles (and the most interesting) tend to blur the lines between an individual's business experience and their personal decision making. And I have a feeling that this has set an agenda which will be important to watch.

Eventually, the invitations started to broaden and other voices began to be heard, with new articles and more content filling our LinkedIn streams. LinkedIn Pulse would aggregate and promote the most popular posts, channels and authors – effectively filtering business-related news for us. All we had to do was choose where to focus.

A couple of weeks ago, LinkedIn announced that they were extending their publishing platform to 25,000 more LinkedIn members. So now if you are quick, anyone with a LinkedIn profile can reach an audience – or at least, reach your own connections. For the moment, you have to apply, but no doubt, this system will be extended to others in the near future.

The thing that is most interesting to me is not that LinkedIn is moving in this direction, but that business professionals are flocking to it. Up until recently, convincing executives to engage with social media was almost impossible. Despite widespread adoption of social networks by consumers, many business leaders remain sceptical, unconvinced and unlikely to commit the time required to see the benefit in social media.

But LinkedIn may have solved the challenge by making social media simple and obvious. After all, we all like to be "influencers" – even if there are 25,000 of us.

This is, however, not just about professionals, reputation and publishing. In the mixing of these professional and personal profiles, there could be something greater at play. Is this a way for LinkedIn to stake a claim against Facebook's social domination? Will we see more insight, personality and flavour in the lives of our business leaders? Will personal and professional brands start to collide in new and exciting ways? One can only hope.

Game of Thrones Season 4 Debut Dominates Social Media Charts

Game of Thrones Season 4 Debut Dominates Social Media Charts image thrones

Game of Thrones has dominated social media today with the long awaited debut of season 4.

The George RR Martin penned series has been a huge hit for HBO over its initial three series, with the show often topping the BitTorrent charts, let alone cable ratings.

Game of Thrones was the top search term on Google April 6th by over a multiple of five.

On Twitter charts, #GAMEOFTHRONESEASON4 dominated markets across the United States, and has started to trend in International markets as legal and not so legal copies hit online.

Initial reaction to the show from fans is positive, with a Tweet from HBO stating that the show was about to begin being particularly popular. The Vine clip below is also golden.

NOTE: potential spoilers (although we've kept them down as much as possible.)

The Dumbest LinkedIn Mistake I See Over and Over Again

Posted: 06 Apr 2014 07:40 PM PDT

Trent Dyrsmid

The Dumbest LinkedIn Mistake I See Over and Over Again image dumbanddumber

When used properly, LinkedIn can be a very powerful tool for generating leads for your company.

Sadly, most people totally F**K this up.

What I'm about to show you has happened to me at least 100 times, and I have ignored the person who reached out to me every single time.

If you are doing what I'm about to show you, PLEASE STOP! People who use LinkedIn this way are ANNOYING the hell out of people and I don't want you to be one of them.

Here's the first offender:

The Dumbest LinkedIn Mistake I See Over and Over Again image linkedin1

Where in this email does it show that this person knows anything about me? Nowhere that I can see.

I do however, see the words "I" and "We" used too many times. And, to make matters even more offensive, this nitwit has attempted to use a scarcity tactic by saying that he can only take 5 calls a week. Seriously?

Here's the second offender:

The Dumbest LinkedIn Mistake I See Over and Over Again image linkedin2

This one is slightly less awful than the prior one. I actually read the entire email, mostly because of the subject line; which made me think (until I read the email) that they were looking for my help.

At no point in this person's email have they asked me anything about myself or what I might be most interested in. Instead, all she has done is include a link to a video that I am supposed to watch. Really? I don't know who you are and you expect me to take time out of my day to watch your stupid video without knowing why or what's in it for me.

Yeah…gonna get right on that just as soon as I finished cutting my grass with a pair of scissors.

Here's the final offender (I've saved the best for last):

The Dumbest LinkedIn Mistake I See Over and Over Again image linkedin3

Clearly this person doesn't know a bloody thing about me or my business.

Do I need help with cold calling? Holy crap! I've written about how cold calling is dead; I'm a content marketer and I don't make cold calls.

If she'd taken a few minutes to read even the about page of my blog, that would have been painfully obvious.

After her pathetic attempt at an opening paragraph, the usual thing happens. It's all about them. "We do this…" and "We can help you with that…" etc…

I don't care what the hell you do! Why should I? Clearly, you don't care enough about me to take 60 seconds to learn more about me before you pooped in my inbox.

Buzz off!!

Ok, rant over.

The Right Way to Connect with Others (Who Don't Yet Know You)

Am I trying to say that you should never use LinkedIn to reach out to a stranger?

No. Definitely not.

What I am trying to say is that whenever you reach out to someone who doesn't yet know you, if you make the first contact all about YOU, that will be the end of any chance you have of developing a relationship with that person.

The right way to connect with a stranger is to make it about THEM.

Wait. Go read that last sentence again.

It's all about them….UNTIL, they become interested in YOU.

Only then can the conversation be about you and how you can help them.

Now that you get the concept, I want to show you an example of how to make it happen.

Cold Email Example

In this example, I'm going to assume that a stranger is reaching out to me because (ultimately) they want to sell me their stuff; which in this case, is software that will help me automate my content marketing efforts (pretty sneaky that I'm using content marketing software for my example, eh?).

——– start of email from Bob ——–

Subject: I loved your post about how content marketing changes everything!

Hey Trent,

I just finished reading your post title, "How Content Marketing Has Forever Changed How to Attract Clients and How You Can Take Advantage of This Shift" and I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it! In fact, I thought it was so good that I've shared it on every social network that I use.

Got any other posts like this one?

Cheers,
Bob

——– end of email from Bob ——–

What do you think is going to happen when I see Bob's email?

Am I likely to ignore it? Uh…hell no.

Bob has stroked my ego…so naturally, I immediately like Bob!

Not only do I like Bob, but I'm going to reply to him…plus, the next time Bob emails me, I'm going to read it.

When I reply to Bob, I'm likely going to tell him thanks for sharing my stuff, supply him with links to a few other articles, and tell him to keep in touch.

The next move is Bob's to make.

What Should Bob Do Next?

With just a single email, Bob has proven that he's not a jerk, and he's got in my good books.

What Bob hasn't done is try to sell me anything.

So, if I was Bob, here' s what I'd do next. When I get Trent's reply, I'm going to reply to that reply like this….

——– start of email from Bob ——–

Subject: Re: I loved your post about how content marketing changes everything!

Hey Trent,

Thanks for the links you sent me. I really enjoyed both posts….especially the part about…x, y, and z. Awesome stuff.

Now that I've spent some time on your blog, I can see that you are super passionate about marketing automation. I can also see that you pump out a LOT of content.

How the heck do you produce so much? Do you have a bunch of people helping you? Do you have some systems or automation that helps you to get so much done?

Cheers,
Bob

——– end of email from Bob ——–

See what Bob is doing? He's not yet tried to sell me his software. Instead, he (smartly) is asking me questions about my business processes.

Why is he doing that? Well, the first reason is to build rapport with me. The second reason is because he's probing for pain.

If Bob shows interest in me, I'm going to like him…and how do you treat people you like? Nicely!

Not only that, but when you like someone, you are going to be more honest with them.

Now that I like Bob and he's showing interest in my business, he's earning the right to direct the conversation where he wants/needs it to go if he's to make a sale at some point.

When to Talk About Your Stuff

So, when should Bob start talking about how his products might help me?

Not before he's figured out if I have a problem that his products can solve, that's when!

Remember Bob's last email to me? He asked me how I pump out so much content. He might also have asked me if I have clients that I product content for (sidebar: if you need that service, let me know), because if I did, I'd likely need his software even more. (second sidebar: if you produce content for your clients, check out my software).

In my next reply to Bob, I would have told him what he wanted to know. I would have told him that it does indeed take a lot of work to produce this volume of content. I would have told him that I also do it for clients.

Knowing this about me, Bob now has a qualified lead for his software, and in his next reply, he could very easily ask me if I'd like to learn more about how his software might be able to help me out.

Or…even better, if Bob had a case study or article about his software, he'd send me that content first with a little note like:

"Hey Trent, given what we've been talking about, I have an article or two that I think you'd like to read. Mind if I send them to you?"

Damn, Bob is smart!

Rather than just send me his links, he's asked for my permission first! (this is why we call it "permission marketing")

Obviously, when I reply to Bob, I'm going to say yes…and in doing so, I kind of owe it to Bob to actually ready what he sends me.

Let's Recap What We've Learned

  1. Never send someone a cold email that, more or less, says "Buy my stuff!" Doing so is a dick move. Don't be a dick.
  2. Always make your first contact all about the other person because doing so will be well received and they will like you for it.
  3. Be sure and share their work and tell them you did so. They will like you even more.
  4. Engage in an actual conversation that is about them first until it's time for it to be about you.
  5. ONLY make the conversation about you if they need what you sell (and you've done enough digging to have a very good idea this is likely the case).
  6. Ask their permission to send them information about your stuff before you send it. That way they are much more likely to pay attention to what you've sent them.
  7. After you send them information about your stuff, it is totally acceptable to follow up with them to ask their opinion of what they saw. If they had a good opinion, ask them to take another step.

Voila…B2B selling that feels good.

Why everyone doesn't do this is beyond me.

What To Do Next

If you sell B2B and are having trouble getting your foot in the door, check out my Best Buyer Formula. It is stuffed full of ideas that I have used for my entire career and I have sold tens of millions of dollars worth of products and services to small businesses – using the exact techniques in course.

If you want to really set yourself apart from your competition, you need to integrate content with your sales efforts. If you need help with content marketing, I've written a book about it.

If you'd like to grab both products (bless your heart), I'm going to give you a big "I love you" discount!

To get both products, and the 50% discount, you will need to use this order form. (Note: if you want to read the sales pages first, use the links above, but place your order via this link.)

Mom Tells World Her Son Is Transgender On Social Media

Mom Tells World Her Son Is Transgender On Social Media image 8374824847 82c73e2d5e b

Jodi Gholson Oliver wins "Most Accepting and Awesome Mom" award for a heartwarming and celebratory Facebook post. On March 27th, Oliver used social media to announce her son being a transgender with a joyful picture of a story reading the words "IT'S A BOY" followed by a touching message:

At the end, Jodi added an adorable sentence addressing the hateful comments that could possibly stem from this spreading around the web: "If you think your question may be inappropriate, it probably is and I will probably not answer it!" Her original post has generated over 500 likes, 40 shares, and close to 100 comments.

Jes, her son, has every right to be proud and share this message on his Tumblr exclaiming "My mom let her facebook friends/family know what's up regarding me just now and this is how she did it. Heck yeah, mom." His post has gone viral with over 150,000 notes. Jes has become an unexpected inspiration to other young adults struggling with identification and transgender teens.

Jodi posted a follow-up Facebook message, commenting on how shocked she is that the post went viral.

"I thought when I made this announcement on FB I was just letting all of my friends and family know about recent developments in our lives and that telling everyone at the same time would just be so much easier. I had no idea this was going to affect so many people like it has."

Jodi and Jes illustrate the power of love and family.

RG3 Unveils New Logo On Instagram

RG3 Unveils New Logo On Instagram image large 8201100125

RG3 joined Instagram with a splash this weekend, revealing a new logo with his first post.

Yes, RG3 feels the need to have his own logo. He's kind of a big deal.

At 24-years-old, RG3 is entering his third year in the NFL. He won rookie of the year honors his first season with the Redskins after leading the team to a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance.

Last season RG3 regressed significantly. His knee wasn't healthy and it affected his play on the field, resulting in a 3-13 season in Washington.

Entering his third year, RG3 is expected to bounce back fully, especially with the addition of DeSean Jackson.

To prepare for the season RG3 has teamed up with Adidas for merchandising. The logo, as seen below, will be branded on a number of products for sale.

What's interesting is RG3′s original tweet about his first Instagram said he would be posting about his family. Adidas is his family then?

What's important is this year's offseason news about RG3 isn't about his knee. Last offseason all we heard was how his ACL rehab was ahead of schedule.

RG3 enters the 2014 with a new logo and a new outlook on football. He is fully healthy and ready to to make you want to buy his merchandise!

Anna Kendrick Showcases Musical Talents On ‘Saturday Night Live’ Debut

Anna Kendrick Showcases Musical Talents On 'Saturday Night Live' Debut image 4840124281 b6f66ef816 b

True Anna Kendrick enthusiasts would know she is more than a Pitch Perfect singer or a friend to Twilight vampires. Getting her start in Broadway, Kendrick was the third youngest Tony Award nominee and participated in many on stage productions.

Her debut last night on 'Saturday Night Live' certainly displayed her true talent, while winning over a majority of the audiences' hearts. Kendrick has been sitting nicely as a trending topic on Facebook since this morning. The "Dongs All Over The World" sketch, featuring most SNL ladies: Kate McKinnon, Sasheer Zamata, Cecily Strong, and Aidy Bryant, has over 60,000 views in under 24 hours proving to be a fan favorite.

It's about time ladies got down with the dirty verses. Finally! A lady jam that glorifies sexual conquests with men all over the world. Kendrick, totally pulling off crimped hair, showcased her rap skills giving The Lonely Island men a run for their money. Icona Pop had a cameo in the video bringing the dirty girl love full circle.

Last night's episode went full on Disney princess turned bad girl kicking off with a Beauty and the Beast spoof. Major props to Kendrick, playing "Belle" whose charming performance included a Lorne Michaels appearance.

This episode is "perfect" promotion for her upcoming cinematic performances. After watching, how can you not love her?

HOW TO: Network for Maximum Success on Twitter with Twitter Marketing Software

I have used hundreds of Twitter Tools and TweetAdder is by far the most powerful marketing software I have encountered!

For that reason I have developed this guide to explain how different features make TweetAdder powerful, and how to use these powerful features for the maximum effect.

If you want to see a video that explains some of the core network building features of TweetAdder check out my TweetAdder video review.

tweetadder-3-download

For a comprehensive look at the most powerful features of this marketing software then give this guide a read.

Overview Screen

tweetadder-account-overview

The overview screen allows you to monitor the status and activities of all of your account from one convenient table.

You can turn each account on or off by clicking on the account, and selecting the on/off button.  This is especially useful if you wish to pause updates to an account, or if you are managing an account from a different computer.

The user icons on the far left show which accounts are logged in, and which ones are logged off or turned off.

To open a user to manage, you can either double click on the row, or select a row and click the "Open User" button.

TweetAdder Functions

tweetadder-sidebar

The TweetAdder sidebar is broken down into six components, five are shown to the left because they are the only five that really matter.

Search Users to Follow is the menu where you can find users to follow based on several different criteria.

As you use the different features for searching for users within this menu you build out a "To Follow List" which you can then get TweetAdder to slowly crawl through and follow the users that are on it.

The most powerful methods for finding users to connect with are listed below in order of most powerful to least.

No matter which method of connection building you use try to manually screen the people you follow if possible so that you can pull out people who are inactive, or irrelevant to you.

Profile Data Search

This a very useful tool for finding more targeted followers.  I build most of my connections via Profile Data searches because I can narrow my search to people who have interests that are relevant enough to them that they list these keywords in their bio.

tweetadder-profile-data-bio-search

Following Everyone Followed by or Following of a User

tweetadder-follow-kevinrose-following

This is a really cool feature that adds all the followers of a particular user to your 'To Follow' list. You go and find a competitor in your niche and start following their followers in the hopes that they'll follow you back.

A powerful way to use this feature is to use people who are similar to you, but very selective about who they follow.  If you follow these people as well you initiate connections with people who are probably active (millions of Twitter users are inactive) and have a high likelihood of being influential.

kevin-rose-following

Tweet Search

This a very useful tool for searching through all of the tweets containing your search term and location (optional).

What people tweet and what they're actually interested in can be a little bit different, so keep that in mind when using this feature.

Twitter tries to put a stop to this sort of thing and will now only produce 20 results at a time, so if you want to use this efficiently you will need to turn automation on let TweetAdder work its in the background.

tweet-search-automation

Following Everyone on a Twitter List

Tweetadder makes it easy to follow everyone on a Twitter list.  Just enter the username and the list name.

follow-twitter-lists

Following Twitter Users

After you've found people you want to follow and added them to your To Follow list, you then have the option to follow people as and when you please, or you can turn on the the automation and the program will automatically follow people for you.

Then all you have to do is to turn on the automation and leave it running on your computer and your job is done.

This sort of automation is not allowed by Twitter so Tweet Adder sets delays between each follow so that Twitter can't detect the automation.

You also have the option to limit the amount of users you follow each day and this is especially important when you get to 2000 followers as Twitter starts to put a stop to excessive following that's often used in Twitter marketing. Until you get to 2,000 followers Twitter will stop you from following more that 2k people, so at this point manual network building with tools like Manage Twitter will help to speed things along.

Once you break through the 2k threshold Twitter caps the number of people you can follow in a day at 1,000 people.

tweetadder-follow-users

Unfollowing Twitter Users

I don't use this feature of TweetAdder, although it is a smart option for anyone who wants to automate Twitter connection building.

I prefer to invest some time every day and use the Twitter Tool Manage Twitter because it offers more options for sorting those people who are not following me so that I can unfollow the most inactive people first.

Here is what the unfollow Twitter users screen looks like:

unfollow-users

Thank You Messages

Using this function allows you to automatically interact with your followers as soon as they follow you back, and this can be a powerful way to get onto the radar of new people in your network.

Many people abuse this feature, and for that reason I rarely check my dms.  I recommend that you avoid their mistakes and don't start off on the wrong foot by sending a shameless self-promoting message and link.

The right way to use this feature is by sending a message that introduces yourself and thanks them for connecting.

tweetadder-thank-you-dm

RSS Feed

Although I don't use this feature because I like to tweet everything manually I recognize its power for automating a stream of tweets to an account that you want to manage automatically.

If you are pressed for time to Tweet this tool could be a serious time saver.

rss-tweets

Video Demo

I have also developed a video review of TweetAdder that you might find useful.

You need to download and use TweetAdder to really appreciate it.  Luckily, you can download TweetAdder and test drive it for free.
