Why the Humble Blog is Still Relevant for Marketing Small Businesses Posted: 21 Apr 2014 08:01 PM PDT Online marketing is like a financial black hole – it sucks a huge amount of resources without any guarantee to get direct sales. It needs time to gain traction and constant re-tweaking to hit the right combination of inbound marketing techniques. It’s a broad world that changes rapidly, making it a business cost rather than an investment. As a result, it’s usually a digital luxury for small businesses. However, there is an inexpensive way to initiate your own marketing campaign. Start a BlogIn a digital age where traditional advertising belongs to the marketing days of yore, you need creative ways to spread your brand online. How will you accomplish this without sounding like a door-to-door salesman in a virtual space? Start a blog that showcases your passion and expertise related to your business. Blog posts that solve a problem or share useful information, such as DIY tips and projects, are great. Experiment with different post formats and use images. You have the option of signing up for a web hosting service when you establish a readership, turning a side project into a full-fledged website. You can share these posts on social media. This gives you a better chance to foster engagement because you have something valuable to share. When your audience grows, you can hire an offshore social media marketer to sustain a targeted campaign. Here are key reminders when blogging:
Blogging is a free and easy way to communicate your ideas. It provides more room for creativity and a chance to build a community instead of just a following. With a sense of humor and plenty of personality, blogging can be a practical marketing tool for small businesses. Kristen Merlin Overshadows the Power House Vocalists Posted: 21 Apr 2014 07:54 PM PDT No one will argue that this season of “The Voice” is jam packed with power house vocalists like Sisaundra Lewis, Tess Boyer, Bria Kelly, Kat Perkins, and Christina Grimmie. Tonight, Kristen Merlin over shadowed the rest of the top 12, even the power house vocalists, in the live show. Don’t read between the lines here: everyone did amazing tonight. I think this is the best competition “The Voice” has seen in a long time, but I really feel like this was Kristen Merlin’s break through night. While the others tried to showcase the depth and range of their long notes (with the exception of Jake Worthington and Josh Kaufman, but you know how I feel about those guys!), Kristen Merlin showed a vulnerable and sweet side to her voice that made me stop everything I was doing and just listen. She showcased a different side of her voice that we haven’t seen before by singing “Stay” by Sugarland. After hearing so many powerful voices, I was relieved to hear something so raw, soft and sweet. There was a slight technical malfunction during her performance, but she pressed on and continued completely unphased by the fact her mic unexpectedly cut out. She showed incredible perseverance and talent in her performance tonight. In fact, Kristen received a standing ovation not only from the audience, but also from all 4 coaches. Some may focus on the imperfections of the technology during her performance, but the absolutely flawless perfection in her singing is the real story here. In fact, Jennifer Nettles herself (the lead singer of Sugarland), her coach Shakira, and former peers from “The Voice” took to Twitter to comment on Kristen Merlin’s performance.
One aspect of Kristen’s performance made me sad tonight: that she feels that her physical image doesn’t fit with a country artist or that it somehow may hold her back. I couldn’t disagree more. As a country fan, we need a switch up. We need Kristen Merlin in the country music scene. We need someone new and exciting and she fits the bill perfectly! She has such a versatile voice and I really hope that America votes her through to next week. Powerful vocals don’t always take the cake when it comes to America’s votes. Vulnerability is just what we needed to hear tonight to break up all of the amazing power performances performances. Kristen Merlin, country music needs you! 3 Ways To Do Social Media Sampling Right Posted: 21 Apr 2014 07:24 PM PDT Since before social media, product sampling was already intuitively social. From grocery store tasting trays to department store perfume reps- sampling has been a great way for brands to connect with potential consumers directly. Giving an undecided purchaser the chance to try your product, at little cost to the company, can highly influence their on-the-spot decision making. Since digital landscapes evolved, brands have learned to listen and participate with users who are talking about their product and intervene on the conversion. Rather than "the data blindness that comes from selling most of its products through retailers," CPG brands in particular have been running social sweepstakes and building coupon micro-sites in order to learn more about interested consumers and track engagement based on products. However, consumers and brands are getting smarter. Consumers expect to get products in their hands when they participate and brands are expected to respond or provide the consumer with their ask instantly. Now, brand marketers can't make product sampling random- but that they have to make it matter and contribute to the bottom line. Social media has proven a successful channel to reach out to consumers in the most direct and instant way. According to Neilsen, "Globally, 46% of consumers use social media to help make purchase decisions." When focused on the right shopper, and finding them in the right medium brands now have the power to "drive impact and determine what drives the biggest return on investment." Social Sampling Done Right:Social technology and automation software allows brands to instantly engage and convert interested users from any media outlets (social, TV, print, billboard, digital ads). By using #actiontags (#try #newproduct) across media, brands can automatically find and respond to a user with their offer. This acts as a consumer opt in— allowing them to get something in return instantly and on-the-go (mobile, mobile, mobile!). This technology also allows companies to capture unique data (shipping address, social ID, age, location, favorite ice cream flavor) of engaged consumers and allows products to be distributed to those most likely to purchase. Benefits of Social Sampling with #actiontags:
Examples of Social Sampling Done Right:1. OREOFor the first time ever, OREO launched a product sampling campaign by featuring an #actiontag in a prime-time TV commercial. It offered customers first access to a new product flavor by adding the hashtag #SendMeOreo at the end of the TV spot, which aired during the 2014 Grammys. By activating a TV commercial within social media using an #actiontag, Oreo was able to amplify their message within an online channel, reward engaged viewers and distribute product to those who have shown intent. Results:
2. SecretSecret ran a product sampling campaign- getting their new Secret Clinical Strength deodorant into the hands of busy, social moms. Seeding began by activating a product post within a Twitter mom's group. Activating social posts allows brands to capitalize on fan conversations and participation. It propels content across feeds, and sometimes across channels, enabling organic content to spread like wildfire. Additionally, brands are able to reward users and distribute product to those who have shown intent by using the #actiontags. Results:
3. TaylorMadeTaylorMade Golf launched their new Project (a) Golf Ball at the AT&T National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach. To expand the excitement around the new product TMaG ran a #Enter to win campaign on Twitter, Facebook and through their email marketing, with the goal of giving away 10K sleeves of the new ball. TaylorMade Golf was able to use their email marketing list to engage people within social media. By putting a tweet intent in their email ("Tweet #Want #ProjectA on social to enter to win") they took a private offer into the public sector. Because of the data collection, TMaG was able to get the balls into the hands of qualified consumers, likely to purchase the ball in the future. Results:

‘The Fault In Our Stars’ Trailer Mocked By “It’s A Metaphor” Meme Posted: 21 Apr 2014 05:30 PM PDT Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's off limits for ridicule. The internet has been relentlessly ripping into the new trailer for The Fault In Our Stars with the new "It's Only A Metaphor" meme. The meme was born after a particularly cheesy incident in the trailer for The Fault In Our Stars where Ansel Elgort's character puts an unlit cigarette into his mouth. He doesn't smoke them. Instead, he explains that by never lighting the cigarettes he never gives them the power to kill him. You know, it's a metaphor. Augustus said: "It's a metaphor. You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you never give it the power to kill you." OK… you know what else doesn't kill you? Not buying cigarettes. But Augustus isn't the first person to have this thought. Apparently people have been putting deadly things in their mouths for years.
The Fault In Our Stars may have a pretty young audience but they still have standards. Lines like "It's A Metaphor" just aren't going to be tolerated… Well, they'll be tolerated. But we're still going to laugh at them. The post 'The Fault In Our Stars' Trailer Mocked By "It's A Metaphor" Meme appeared first on Twitter Tools Reviews. Magician Darcy Oake’s ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Video Goes Viral [Video] Posted: 21 Apr 2014 03:57 PM PDT Britain's Got Talent's YouTube channel posted a video on April 19 of a jaw-dropping act and it already has over 2 million views. Darcy Oake, magician from Canada, traveled all the way to the UK to audition, stunning judges and the audience with his illusions. This four-minute YouTube video has certainly changed the course of his life. His act included multiple doves, fire, eggs, and thousands of mouths hitting the floor. Also, a huge surprise at the end that shocked everyone. Darcy is trying to adjust to all the publicity, new Twitter followers, and more and more people saying searching his name on the internet. "My social media is just going bananas. This is the first time there has ever been an eruption of followers and people messaging me. It is all kind of new to me." He better buckle up. With his video going viral in under 48 hours, this should be an awesome and bumpy ride. It is a nice change of pace to see how humble and unprepared this Winnipeg magician is for internet fame. "It's so great and it just came out on Saturday and it's still like, I don't know. It hasn't really sunk in, I guess." Meanwhile, judge David Williams is still processing Oake's act. Robert De Niro Proves He Isn’t Too Old To Vine, Or Is He? Posted: 21 Apr 2014 02:38 PM PDT Robert De Niro is widely recognized as one of the greatest actors of his generation. He has made so many good movies and acted in so many great roles that even when he puts out a stinker, his public perception doesn't seem to take a hit. But can he keep up with the rapidly evolving tech landscape? Can De Niro pull off a six and a half second long movie and debut on Vine? It turns out he can, and by poking fun of his age, he can even make it worth watching (although, with Vine video runtimes, videos don't have to reach that high of a bar to be worth watching). Jerome Jarre, who has 5.4 million followers on Vine and is a judge of the new #6secfilm category of De Niro's own Tribeca film festival, posted the Vine. In it, De Niro acts perplexed by the video sharing app, before Jearred acts surprised and concerned that the legendary actor has gotten access to his Vine account. I'm sure Jarre and De Niro would like us to believe that the Vine was spontaneous, and that De Niro really is completely befuddled by technology to the point where he confuses Jarre's iPhone for his own. But it is fairly safe assumption that this was pre planned. Since the Vine has been posted, it has been shared (err, re-vined) 36.1 thousand times and liked 137.5 thousand times. Check out De Niro's Vine debut below. [Photo Credit: Rubenstein]The post Robert De Niro Proves He Isn't Too Old To Vine, Or Is He? appeared first on Twitter Tools Reviews. Posted: 21 Apr 2014 02:07 PM PDT Opportunities to find a job are everywhere on Twitter. Getting these jobs takes some different tactics than traditionally. Resume’s are becoming less important as the importance of a solid social media community continues to increase. In this article I cover 10 tips that will help you find a job with Twitter by identifying more job opportunities and positioning yourself as the best person for the job. 1. Start a #HireMe CampaignLet your followers know you are on the hunt for a new job. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and send a tweet sharing your profile link. Tweet valuable resources and do your best to help your audience out. You can help people in your Twitter network by sharing their content, recommending them, and helping them build buzz about content they are sharing. If you have helped others they will feel inclined to reciprocate the helpfulness, so when they see that you are on a #jobhunt they will be more likely to help you out if they can. 2. Use Job Hunting #HashtagsSend a tweet asking if anyone knows about new opportunities in your niche. You can use #hashtags to let people know you are doing a #jobsearch. Job Listings: You can find general job advice and lots of listings through hashtags like #jobs, #recruiting, #jobadvice, #jobposting, #jobhunt and #jobsearch. To narrow it down seek out more specific hashtags, such as or #prjobs or #salesjobs. Job-Related and Industry Chats: Getting involved with industry chats is a way to show your industry in a particular field and represent yourself as a knowledgeable person. Also, if your search isn’t going so well, get involved in job-related chats, such as #jobhuntchat, #careerchat, and #hirefriday for friendly advice. 3. Build a Strong NetworkA lot of successful Twitter job stories actually end with the punchline, “I wasn’t even looking for a job.” The stronger your network is the more of a reason there is for employers to hire you, if you are willing to tweet on behalf of your employer. 4. Connect with RecruitersUsing the Twitter Marketing software TweetAdder I did a search for any Twitter accounts with the keyword “recruiter” in their bio. The search returned: 5425 people with the word “recruiter” in their bio. A bio search is not the only way to use TweetAdder to build connections, you can also follow all people on Twitter list, or people who have recently tweeted a keyword or phrase you want to target. To discover how to use TweetAdder for maximum effect check out this TweetAdder networking success guide. 5. Optimize Your BioInclude a link to an online CV or resume in your bio. Make it clear that you are seeking employment and taking action to find a job. Let people know about the kind of position you are looking for. Ask your audience to share your profile with potential employers and make it easy for people to contact you for more information. Get your followers to connect with you on LinkedIn and take the time to create a complete LinkedIn profile. 6. Position Yourself as an ExpertBe a thought leader. Speak your mind and back up your thoughts with facts. Spark discussion with people who have large followings. Insightful quotes and quality content are two tried and tested content marketing strategies that work very well for gaining recognition as an expert in your niche. Having more followers also creates the perception of expertise. If you want more Twitter followers I recommend you check out these 50 innovative tips and the service Grow My Twitter Network.
7. Use a Twitter Job Search EngineTwitJobSearch is one search engine for finding jobs on Twitter. Below you can see what it looks like. Tweetmyjobs is another Twitter job search engine. This jobs search engine seems more enhanced than TwitJobSearch but requires that you sign up for a free account before they deliver any search results. If these two tools do not give you what you are looking for a great place to look is Twitter’s advanced search engine. The nice thing about Twitter’s search engine is it makes it easy to search all tweets and focus in on the tweets that matter the most to you. 8. Start a BlogIf you own a successful blog this will be a clear indicator to any employer that you are a capable content marketer who could help create similar success for a prospective employer. Having a blog also places you in the position of the expert and enables you to develop your voice while building trust with your audience as you deliver value. 9. Follow Job Search Lists & AccountsThe Twitter account @JobHuntOrg created a Twitter list with 180 members that all tweet about new job opportunities! Here is the link: https://twitter.com/JobHuntOrg/job-listings/ Another interesting list comes from @betterjobsearch and he describes the list as “Specialists in reporting, consulting and for job seekers, listings, job fairs.” This Twitter list has 476 members. Here’s the link: https://twitter.com/betterjobsearch/job-guru-career-work Twitter Accounts That Post Job OpeningsBelow you will find some Twitter accounts and lists related to different people on Twitter who are involved in the #JobSearch niche. #JobOpening is another hashtag worth researching. By company@attjobs – Jobs at AT&T By field@alldevjobs - Developer jobs By job type@findinternships – Internships and entry level jobs for college students By region@MyBristolJobs – Job listings from mybristoljobs.co.uk General@betterjobsearch 10. Take the Conversation OfflineOnce you have established a connection with a recruiter or employer who has a job offer you are interested in the next step is to take your conversation to the next level with a call. Connect on Skype or get a phone number and set up a phone interview. Often there are multiple interviews but sometimes if the interview goes well enough that might be all you need to get the job! Keep calm when your interview is onAccording to Scott Rosenfield of Men’s Health “when it comes down to two equal candidates, employers hire the guy they'd be more likely to hang out with.” So don’t take yourself too seriously. Keep a calm and friendly attitude in your interview and it will pay off if you are up against uptight competition. FeedbackHave you ever gotten a job opportunity because of Twitter?Leave a comment and let us know how Twitter has helped you with your #JobSearch. How to Recycle Your Blog Content Posted: 21 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT I don't mean to shoot myself in the foot, but this topic is just too important not to address. Besides, "going green" continues to be increasingly important in our society – and recycling is a cornerstone of green living. And what's more green than online recycling? No trash! Don't trash a great idea or discard one just because you wrote something similar. Some topics just deserve to be revisited – it's that simple. Save your sanity and save the world one blog post at a time – with recycled content. Why Recycle?Recycling content isn't so much about being lazy or not having the time to create a fully original post on a fully new and original topic (though that might be your inspiration – and that's fair). It's about revisiting important topics, updating information, and continuing the dialogue. Perhaps you previously wrote a blog post about a timely topic – odds are that there are more recent developments on that topic; those developments are likely of interest to your audience. Or maybe the information or recommendation on a previous post has changed. Or you wrote a high-traffic post that has had tons of traffic and visitor comments. There are plenty of reasons to recycle blog content… though you really aren't recycling the content; you're more giving it a facelift and recycling the initial intent. You aren't disposing or copying – you're turning the original into something new. Reduce, Reuse, Recycling Content TipsRecycling content is all about making something new out of something old and about extending the lifecycle of an existing piece. There are many ways to recycle content in ways that provide high value to your blog and its readers – here are just a few of my top content recycling tips. 1. Write a part two follow upThis is a great way to extend the life of an existing blog post that either had high value and high readership or that has had new developments. A part-two brings multiple benefits When using this tactic, I recommend using the original title along with "Part Two." Doing so is not only beneficial for SEO purposes, but it also helps to catch your readers' eyes and draw their attention back to a topic they are already familiar with and interested in. When doing a "part two" follow-up post, make sure that you include at least one link back to the original post. For transparency and relevancy purposes, it's best to do this in a clear, straightforward way. For example, "For more information about ________, see the original post, here." This not only gives your readers a reference point, but continues to direct traffic to the original post. 2. Quote yourselfTypically, when you develop a quote for use in print (be it virtual print or actual print), you put quite a bit of effort and time into developing the perfect wording that represents the perfect tone and conveys the intended just right. Extend the value of that quote (and the time you invested in developing it) by repurposing it into posts. You might develop a full post around the quote, focusing on the larger issue at hand, or you might use the post to explore the quote in more depth; explain to your readers your position and where the origin of your opinion. Don't have a quote of your own to write on? Write on someone else's that has inspired you. 3. Update old guest post and post it on your blogMost of the time, if you write a guest post the understanding is that you are writing 100 percent unique content for that blog – however, there is nothing wrong with updating that post and revisiting the themes on your own blog. Explore an updated stance or select one topic from the original post and expand upon it to create a new post. As a rule of thumb, it's considered "good etiquette" to link back to that original blog and the post – it helps the other blog's traffic and SEO. 4. Feature old content on sidebarMost blogs have some sort of sidebar or side column included in the layout – this column is the perfect spot to highlight previous, relevant content. Don't let your best posts die off too soon There are numerous ways to do this. You can consider featuring older posts that simply had high traffic for starters (noticed how I create a 'Best of WHSR' at the siderbar?). Alternately, perhaps you have older posts that are relevant to a current event – these are great contenders. If you write about a topic that includes recurring events, the Oscars for example, you could highlight your roundup from last year's event – it makes a great reference point and pre-party item for the current year. 5. Promote old content on social media using plugins like Tweet Old PostsThe great thing about social media is that it makes everything current. Just because your content was written a few months ago doesn't mean that it isn't relevant – a good post is often still a good post. Old blogposts, new traffics Revitalize web traffic by promoting that content on social media. Rather than developing Tweets specifically promoting the post as "new," consider using one of the plugins, such as Tweet Old Posts. This app allows you to schedule tweets, including hashtags and links, to extend the life of your posts. Choose the time between tweets and select how many tweets are issued. Automating the promotions not only keeps your content alive – it saves you a ton of time. 6. Feature old popular content in new roundup postsOne of the most valuable kind of posts is the good old round-up post. These round-ups are a great way to get additional eyes on particularly noteworthy content while also providing an easy topic for you. Visitors love them because they can quickly digest the information and can easily access the items that are of particular interest to them. When doing a round-up post, make sure to – of course, link to the original post. Also, add a relevant image for each item and consider using the original titles. One of the most straightforward and easy to read ways to do round-up posts is to develop an introductory paragraph and then list each post in list format. Write a teaser paragraph or two alongside an image used in the actual post – pair it with the original post headline and you're good to go. It's quick, it's interesting, and it provides value – win-win-win. 7. Reuse old post in forum postingUpdate and re-post your old content to forum; or, quote yourself and post your old writing as reply in forum discussion. Your blog posts don't have to stay in the (blog) house – let them out into the great wide open. Get involved in online forums and post your blogs – or relevant portions of them, at least, as part of your forum responses. Consider updating one of your blogs and posting it to start your own forum thread. Quotes work as well as blog posts do for this one It's all about extending the long tail and providing valuable input on the topic at hand. As long as your blog post content and/or quote are relevant, you're good to go. Just make sure that you revisit the forum after posting to stay engaged in the discussion and remain part of the conversation. Who knows – there may be an opportunity to share even more content. As a rule of thumb, it's generally a good idea to post a link back to the original post on your blog. What you post in the forum likely acts as a teaser, so by linking back to your blog, you are able to give the reader a more full view – not to mention that you may secure additional readers as a result. 8. Get visualRecycle your blog content into something even more dynamic. Use a blog as an inspiration to create a video or relevant infographic. You'll likely need to do a bit of work and research to get it to this point, but doing so provides an opportunity to paint a different picture of a topic that is already important to you. For example, this is what I did out from my web web hosting beginner guide. Over to you: Tell us your blog recycling tips! There are tons of ways to recycle old blog posts and content into something new, noteworthy, and relevant to your audience. Focus on posts that important to you, timely, and that offer something new – remember, recycling is not the same as reusing. Have you done any recycling job recently to your blog?
